The wavelet transform can be seen as a synthesis of ideas that have emerged since the 1960s in mathematics, physics, and electrical engineering. The basic idea is to use a family of ``building blocks'' to represent in an efficient way the object at hand, be it a function, an operator, a signal, or an image. The building blocks themselves come in different ``sizes'' which can describe different features with different resolutions. The papers in this book attempt to give some theoretical and technical shape to this intuitive picture of wavelets and their uses. The papers collected here were prepared for an AMS Short Course on Wavelets and Applications, held at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in San Antonio in January 1993. Here readers will find general background on wavelets as well as more detailed views of specific techniques and applications. With contributions by some of the top experts in the field, this book provides an excellent introduction to this important and growing area of research.

Most existing books on wavelets are either too mathematical or they focus on too narrow a specialty. This book provides a thorough treatment of the subject from an engineering point of view. It is a one-stop source of theory, algorithms, applications, and computer codes related to wavelets. This second edition has been updated by the addition of: a section on "Other Wavelets" that describes curvelets, ridgelets, lifting wavelets, etc a section on lifting algorithms Sections on Edge Detection and Geophysical Applications Section on Multiresolution Time Domain Method (MRTD) and on Inverse problems

Wavelets From A Statistical Perspective written by Maarten Jansen and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-04-18 with Business & Economics categories.

Wavelets from a Statistical Perspective offers a modern, 2nd generation look on wavelets, far beyond the rigid setting of the equispaced, dyadic wavelets in the early days. With the methods of this book, based on the lifting scheme, researchers can set up a wavelet or another multiresolution analysis adapted to their data, ranging from images to scattered data or other irregularly spaced observations. Whereas classical wavelets stand a bit apart from other nonparametric methods, this book adds a multiscale touch to your spline, kernel or local polynomial smoothing procedure, thereby extending its applicability to nonlinear, nonparametric processing for piecewise smooth data. One of the chapters of the book constructs B-spline wavelets on nonequispaced knots and multiscale local polynomial transforms. In another chapter, the link between wavelets and Fourier analysis, ubiquitous in the classical approach, is explained, but without being inevitable. In further chapters the discrete wavelet transform is contrasted with the continuous version, the nondecimated (or maximal overlap) transform taking an intermediate position. An important principle in designing a wavelet analysis through the lifting scheme is finding the right balance between bias and variance. Bias and variance also play a crucial role in the nonparametric smoothing in a wavelet framework, in finding well working thresholds or other smoothing parameters. The numerous illustrations can be reproduced with the online available, accompanying software. The software and the exercises can also be used as a starting point in the further exploration of the material.

Wavelets And Renormalization written by Guy Battle and has been published by World Scientific this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999 with Science categories.

WAVELETS AND RENORMALIZATION describes the role played by wavelets in Euclidean field theory and classical statistical mechanics. The author begins with a stream-lined introduction to quantum field theory from a rather basic point of view. Functional integrals for imaginary-time-ordered expectations are introduced early and naturally, while the connection with the statistical mechanics of classical spin systems is introduced in a later chapter.A vastly simplified (wavelet) version of the celebrated Glimm-Jaffe construction of the 3 quantum field theory is presented. It is due to Battle and Federbush, and it bases an inductively defined cluster expansion on a wavelet decomposition of the Euclidean quantum field. The presentation is reserved for the last chapter, while the more basic aspects of cluster expansions are reviewed in the chapter on classical spin systems.Wavelets themselves are studied from two different points of view arising from two disciplines. The mathematical point of view covers the basic properties of wavelets and methods for constructing well-known wavelets such as Meyer wavelets, Daubechies wavelets, etc. The physical point of view covers the renormalization group formalism, where there is a close connection between wavelets and Gaussian fixed points. The book is heavily mathematical, but avoids the theorem-proof-theorem-proof format in the interests of preserving the flow of the discussion i.e., it is written in the style of an old-fashioned theoretical physics book, but the major claims are rigorously proven. The minor themes of the book are reflection positivity, the combinatorics of cluster expansions, and the issue of phase transitions themes which have nothing to do with wavelets, but which provide necessary cultural background for the physical context."

This seminal book unites three different areas of modern science: the micromechanics and nanomechanics of composite materials; wavelet analysis as applied to physical problems; and the propagation of a new type of solitary wave in composite materials, nonlinear waves. Each of the three areas is described in a simple and understandable form, focusing on the many perspectives of the links among the three. All of the techniques and procedures are described here in the clearest and most open form, enabling the reader to quickly learn and use them when faced with the new and more advanced problems that are proposed in this book. By combining these new scientific concepts into a unitary model and enlightening readers on this pioneering field of research, readers will hopefully be inspired to explore the more advanced aspects of this promising scientific direction. The application of wavelet analysis to nanomaterials and waves in nanocomposites can be very appealing to both specialists working on theoretical developments in wavelets as well as specialists applying these methods and experiments in the mechanics of materials. Sample Chapter(s). Chapter 1: Introduction (121 KB). Contents: Wavelet Analysis; Materials with Micro- or Nanostructure; Waves in Materials; Simple and Solitary Waves in Materials; Solitary Waves and Elastic Waves. Readership: Advanced undergraduate and graduate students as well as experts in mathematical modeling, engineering mechanics and mechanics, physics; specialists in wavelet and wave analysis as tools for mathematical modeling.

This unique resource examines the conceptual, computational, and practical aspects of applied signal processing using wavelets. With this book, readers will understand and be able to use the power and utility of new wavelet methods in science and engineering problems and analysis. The text is written in a clear, accessible style avoiding unnecessary abstractions and details. From a computational perspective, wavelet signal processing algorithms are presented and applied to signal compression, noise suppression, and signal identification. Numerical illustrations of these computational techniques are further provided with interactive software (MATLAB code) that is available on the World Wide Web. Topics and Features Continuous wavelet and Gabor transforms Frame-based theory of discretization and reconstruction of analog signals is developed New and efficient "overcomplete" wavelet transform is introduced and applied Numerical illustrations with an object-oriented computational perspective using the Wavelet Signal Processing Workstation (MATLAB code) available This book is an excellent resource for information and computational tools needed to use wavelets in many types of signal processing problems. Graduates, professionals, and practitioners in engineering, computer science, geophysics, and applied mathematics will benefit from using the book and software tools. The present, softcover reprint is designed to make this classic textbook available to a wider audience. A self-contained text that is theoretically rigorous while maintaining contact with interesting applications. A particularly noteworthy topic...is a class of ‘overcomplete wavelets’. These functions are not orthonormal and they lead to many useful results. —Journal of Mathematical Psychology
