Engaging important discussions about social conflict, environmental change, and imperialism in Africa, Different Shades of Green points to legacies of African environmental writing, often neglected as a result of critical perspectives shaped by dominant Western conceptions of nature and environmentalism. Drawing on an interdisciplinary framework employing postcolonial studies, political ecology, environmental history, and writing by African environmental activists, Byron Caminero-Santangelo emphasizes connections within African environmental literature, highlighting how African writers have challenged unjust, ecologically destructive forms of imperial development and resource extraction. Different Shades of Green also brings into dialogue a wide range of African creative writing—including works by Chinua Achebe, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o, Bessie Head, Nadine Gordimer, Zakes Mda, Nuruddin Farah, Wangari Maathai, and Ken Saro-Wiwa—in order to explore vexing questions for those involved in the struggle for environmental justice, in the study of political ecology, and in the environmental humanities, urging continued imaginative thinking in effecting a more equitable, sustain¬able future in Africa.

Three Shades of Green has been written taking into consideration different perspectives of human life. the three stories 'Sandy and Pearl', 'A Fine Line' and 'Peetam' have different storylines about different protagonists set in different situations of human life. Underlying each story is a message, which is conveyed in a subtle manner throughout the stories. Critical issues, like female foeticide and dowry, have been taken up in the first story very beautifully. the second story talks about love, betrayal and a fine line between love and selfishness. the third story 'Peetam' talks about the immortality of the soul. Three Shades of Green is a beautiful presentation of feminist literature interspersed with wonderful emotions of the human mind; the characters are so real, that you would often mistake them for real life people. the challenges before two women, each confronted with a different problem, how a person in love crosses the fine line between love and selfishness and the invincibility of the human soul presented through use of simple language and a mature style makes all these stories worth reading.

Ok, I admit it. I am trying to trick you with my choice of title. I want to get your attention. The parallel with the fifty shades of grey production is absolutely intended. Of course you only understand what the heck I’m talking about if you’ve read the books or seen the movies. Anyhow, if I tell you right away that there is not much suspense or sexual content in this book, you may put it back down and I don’t want that. So let’s see if I can manage to get you excited about what excites me. Sexual energy is energy after all, and energy put towards any goal tends to yield results. My dream may already be your dream, maybe not yet, but it’s about making our common world a little better, a little greener. Any shade is good, because let’s be honest, we don’t all have the same level of motivation or opportunities; but a little greener is always possible. And a little greener over time means we are going in the direction of living more sustainably on this planet, in better balance with the natural world.

Is there a real community of interest on the state of the environment that transcends national boundaries? An answer to this vital question will ultimately determine the success or failure of initiatives where international co-operation and co-ordination are essential, such as atmospheric or water pollution controls. Shades of Green, volume two of the ISSP (International Social Survey Programme) series, analyzes data from identical surveys conducted in 22 countries and tackles a wide range of attitudes and priorities. Expectations of government in terms of environmental protection, a comparison of Canada-U.S. results, the level of knowledge on environmental issues from country to country, the perceived role for science in solving ecological problems, and attitudinal differences between the West and states of the former Soviet Union - these issues have serious implications for the environmental movement and government policies worldwide.

This collection of thoughts or sixty shades of green, is my attempt to raise important environmental concerns specific to India. The issues discussed are however common across the World I started penning down these thoughts in the form of a blog since July 2014. Over the last 18 months I have posted around 90 articles, mostly, every Sunday morning. This book has a select set of 60 articles in celebration of my completing 60 years. The posts on the blog have been well received. Today there are close to 1200 followers and 30,000+ views. Several of these followers and friends suggested that I publish a compilation of these articles. Many said that these articles have thoughts and ideas that need to be widely shared. Also that the style of writing is different and refreshingly new to the environmental fraternity. This positive feedback encouraged me to publish this book. In all the articles, I use humor and satire to discuss various issues on environment using stories. Most of the "stories" I tell are not real... but created from my experiences and suitably crafted for the purpose of sharing. I hope to continue writing articles on the blog and I may bring out another collection of forty to make to 100 soon!
