This book presents a variety of techniques for solving ordinary differential equations analytically and features a wealth of examples. Focusing on the modeling of real-world phenomena, it begins with a basic introduction to differential equations, followed by linear and nonlinear first order equations and a detailed treatment of the second order linear equations. After presenting solution methods for the Laplace transform and power series, it lastly presents systems of equations and offers an introduction to the stability theory. To help readers practice the theory covered, two types of exercises are provided: those that illustrate the general theory, and others designed to expand on the text material. Detailed solutions to all the exercises are included. The book is excellently suited for use as a textbook for an undergraduate class (of all disciplines) in ordinary differential equations.

Differential equations, especially nonlinear, present the most effective way for describing complex physical processes. Methods for constructing exact solutions of differential equations play an important role in applied mathematics and mechanics. This book aims to provide scientists, engineers and students with an easy-to-follow, but comprehensive, description of the methods for constructing exact solutions of differential equations.

This book is based on a two-semester course in ordinary di?erential eq- tions that I have taught to graduate students for two decades at the U- versity of Missouri. The scope of the narrative evolved over time from an embryonic collection of supplementary notes, through many classroom tested revisions, to a treatment of the subject that is suitable for a year (or more) of graduate study. If it is true that students of di?erential equations giveaway their point of viewbythewaytheydenotethederivativewith respecttotheindependent variable, then the initiated reader can turn to Chapter 1, note that I write x ?,not x , and thus correctly deduce that this book is written with an eye toward dynamical systems. Indeed, this book contains a thorough int- duction to the basic properties of di?erential equations that are needed to approach the modern theory of (nonlinear) dynamical systems. However, this is not the whole story. The book is also a product of my desire to demonstrate to my students that di?erential equations is the least insular of mathematical subjects, that it is strongly connected to almost all areas of mathematics, and it is an essential element of applied mathematics.

This book was written as a comprehensive introduction to the theory of ordinary differential equations with a focus on mechanics and dynamical systems as time-honored and important applications of this theory. His torically, these were the applications that spurred the development of the mathematical theory and in hindsight they are still the best applications for illustrating the concepts, ideas, and impact of the theory. While the book is intended for traditional graduate students in mathe matics, the material is organized so that the book can also be used in a wider setting within today's modern university and society (see "Ways to Use the Book" below). In particular, it is hoped that interdisciplinary programs with courses that combine students in mathematics, physics, engineering, and other sciences can benefit from using this text. Working professionals in any of these fields should be able to profit too by study of this text. An important, but optional component of the book (based on the in structor's or reader's preferences) is its computer material. The book is one of the few graduate differential equations texts that use the computer to enhance the concepts and theory normally taught to first- and second-year graduate students in mathematics. I have made every attempt to blend to gether the traditional theoretical material on differential equations and the new, exciting techniques afforded by computer algebra systems (CAS), like Maple, Mathematica, or Matlab.

Mathematical equations which can be used to establish a relation between various functions and their derivatives are known as differential equations. They can be used for representing physical quantities, their rates of change, and a correlation between the two. Differential equations can be classified into ordinary differential equations, non-linear differential equations and partial differential equations. These can also be divided on the basis of their order. The order of a differential equation is determined by the term having the highest derivative. The various sub topics of this discipline are delay differential equations, integro-differential equations, stochastic differential equations, etc. The subject of differential equations finds extensive application in the fields of physics, engineering, chemistry, biology and economics. This book presents the complex subject of differential equations in the most comprehensible and easy to understand language. Different approaches, evaluations and methodologies on differential equations have been included herein. Those in search of information to further their knowledge will be greatly assisted by this book.

This self-tutorial offers a concise yet thorough introduction into the mathematical analysis of approximation methods for partial differential equation. A particular emphasis is put on finite element methods. The unique approach first summarizes and outlines the finite-element mathematics in general and then in the second and major part, formulates problem examples that clearly demonstrate the techniques of functional analysis via numerous and diverse exercises. The solutions of the problems are given directly afterwards. Using this approach, the author motivates and encourages the reader to actively acquire the knowledge of finite- element methods instead of passively absorbing the material as in most standard textbooks. This English edition is based on the Finite Element Methods for Engineering Sciences by Joel Chaskalovic.

Hilbert's talk at the second International Congress of 1900 in Paris marked the beginning of a new era in the calculus of variations. A development began which, within a few decades, brought tremendous success, highlighted by the 1929 theorem of Ljusternik and Schnirelman on the existence of three distinct prime closed geodesics on any compact surface of genus zero, and the 1930/31 solution of Plateau's problem by Douglas and Radò. The book gives a concise introduction to variational methods and presents an overview of areas of current research in this field. This new edition has been substantially enlarged, a new chapter on the Yamabe problem has been added and the references have been updated. All topics are illustrated by carefully chosen examples, representing the current state of the art in their field.

Linear and Nonlinear Integral Equations: Methods and Applications is a self-contained book divided into two parts. Part I offers a comprehensive and systematic treatment of linear integral equations of the first and second kinds. The text brings together newly developed methods to reinforce and complement the existing procedures for solving linear integral equations. The Volterra integral and integro-differential equations, the Fredholm integral and integro-differential equations, the Volterra-Fredholm integral equations, singular and weakly singular integral equations, and systems of these equations, are handled in this part by using many different computational schemes. Selected worked-through examples and exercises will guide readers through the text. Part II provides an extensive exposition on the nonlinear integral equations and their varied applications, presenting in an accessible manner a systematic treatment of ill-posed Fredholm problems, bifurcation points, and singular points. Selected applications are also investigated by using the powerful Padé approximants. This book is intended for scholars and researchers in the fields of physics, applied mathematics and engineering. It can also be used as a text for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in applied mathematics, science and engineering, and related fields. Dr. Abdul-Majid Wazwaz is a Professor of Mathematics at Saint Xavier University in Chicago, Illinois, USA.

During the past three decades, the development of nonlinear analysis, dynamical systems and their applications to science and engineering has stimulated renewed enthusiasm for the theory of Ordinary Differential Equations (ODE).This useful book, which is based around the lecture notes of a well-received graduate course, emphasizes both theory and applications, taking numerous examples from physics and biology to illustrate the application of ODE theory and techniques.Written in a straightforward and easily accessible style, this volume presents dynamical systems in the spirit of nonlinear analysis to readers at a graduate level and serves both as a textbook or as a valuable resource for researchers.
