Differentiated instruction is an approach to teaching individual students according to their learning strengths and needs. Participants in this research study were given a consent form and survey via their school mailboxes. Subjects were drawn from three rural elementary schools; participation in the survey was voluntary. The purposes of this research study were discerning what elementary teacher's perspectives were concerning differentiating instruction within the reading curriculum, which differentiated instructional strategies teachers were utilizing, and what the barriers were that teachers felt hinder effective differentiating reading instruction. Participants also indicated whether or not they would desire professional development on the topic of DI. Results of this study reported that a majority of the participants perceive that differentiating reading instruction was a large part of their job as an elementary teacher. As for barriers to differentiating reading instruction, the majority of participants reported that time (to plan and prepare) was the largest obstacle to effective differentiating reading instruction. Lastly, participants were split evenly on participating in a professional development program that focused on DI reading strategies. As with any research study, there were limitations to this study as well. Some of these limitations included limited size of subject pool, limited research and representativeness of population and validity. Each of the limitations was addressed in the recommendations for future research. --Author abstract.
