This is an exploration of the ways in which science teachers can respond appropriately to the whole range of pupils in their classes in mainstream schools. The author analyzes the nature of individual differences relevant to the science teacher, paying particular attention to learning difficulties and to high ability. He considers different kinds of response and specific tactics which can be deployed to help the range of pupils who find science difficult to learn, and to extend and enrich the science education of those who learn it with ease. He provides a theoretical framework for differentiated science teaching and practical proposals for effective classroom practice.

Research has found that students are often left unengaged in the science classroom, and as a result, they often display poor academic achievement. Research has demonstrated that differentiation and inquiry-based instruction can be effective pedagogical tools to generate a constructivist classroom that increases student engagement and performance. With the adoption of next Generation Science Standards’ three-dimensional learning, these two tools are expected to be important in the science classroom to help students not only understand the content, but also the crosscutting concepts and science and engineering practices. This project attempts to increase students’ engagement and performance within the science classroom by increasing their conceptual understanding of the content and nature of science. The project focuses on phenomena involved in the central idea of homeostasis. The mini-unit uses the guided inquiry approach and allows students to use science and engineering practices to learn the content before receiving a formal explanation of the concept. Lessons were designed using the Target Inquiry template. Scaffolding guides, Socratic questioning, as well as opportunities to control their own learning, are recommended to differentiate the instruction to each individual learner. Testing this mini-unit in the classroom and collecting student artifacts, performance assessments, and survey responses will be used to evaluate the effectiveness of this min-unit.
