Examining Calvino's literary experiments as a young artist in search of his narrative voice, Ricci explores the psychological and existential motivations intrinsically linked to the writer's need for textual and systemic patterning. I racconti contains some of Calvino's least-read works, yet these early stories address issues, present scenarios and generate a growing variation of themes that form the heart of Calvino's narrative discourse. Ricci points out that melancholy permeates Calvino's works—even at his most playful. He suggests that if Calvino's highest merit was his sense of wonder and his urge to transform and defeat obscurantism with all the joy he could muster, one must remember that his work expressed, often painfully, the limits of human rationalism. I racconti can thus be read as a catalogue of the anxieties of both the young author and postwar Italian society.

The gripping origin story of Pong, Atari, and the digital icons who defined the world of video games. A deep, nostalgic dive into the advent of gaming, Easy to Learn, Difficult to Master returns us to the emerging culture of Silicon Valley. At the center of this graphic history, dynamically drawn in colors inspired by old computer screens, is the epic feud that raged between Atari founder Nolan Bushnell and inventor Ralph Baer for the title of “father of the video game.” While Baer, a Jewish immigrant whose family fled Germany for America, developed the first TV video-game console and ping-pong game in the 1960s, Bushnell, a self-taught whiz kid from Utah, put out Atari’s pioneering table-tennis arcade game, Pong, in 1972. Thus, a prolonged battle began over who truly spearheaded the multibillion-dollar gaming industry, and around it a sweeping narrative about invention, inspiration, and the seeds of digital revolution.

One of the earliest dreams of the fledgling field of artificial intelligence (AI) was to build computer programs that could play games as well as or better than the best human players. Despite early optimism in the field, the challenge proved to be surprisingly difficult. However, the 1990s saw amazing progress. Computers are now better than humans in checkers, Othello and Scrabble; are at least as good as the best humans in backgammon and chess; and are rapidly improving at hex, go, poker, and shogi. This book documents the progress made in computers playing games and puzzles. The book is the definitive source for material of high-performance game-playing programs.

Games Are Not written by David Myers and has been published by Manchester University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-08-15 with Games & Activities categories.

How do we reconcile a videogame industry's insistence that games positively affect human beliefs and behaviors with the equally prevalent assumption that games are “just games”? How do we reconcile accusations that games make us violent and antisocial and unproductive with the realization that games are a universal source of human joy? In Game are not, David Myers demonstrates that these controversies and conflicts surrounding the meanings and effects of games are not going away; they are essential properties of the game's paradoxical aesthetic form. Games are not focuses on games writ large, bound by neither digital form nor by cultural interpretation. Interdisciplinary in scope and radical in conclusion, Games are not positions games as unique objects evoking a peculiar and paradoxical liminal state – a lusory attitude – that is essential to human creativity, knowledge, and sustenance of the species.

Winning In Tough Hold Em Games written by Nick Grudzien and has been published by Two Plus Two Publishing LLC this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-04 with Games & Activities categories.

The recent boom of Texas hold 'em has forever changed the way the game is played. Many more people know how to play this game well. Even the "loose" players who come to gamble have become far more aggressive, making them more difficult to play against. So a basic tight and patient strategy will no longer guarantee that you can make a significant amount of money in games at the higher stakes. This is especially true short-handed, which have become increasingly popular in the online poker rooms. This text is the first to tackle the complex issues presented when playing short-handed and high-stakes limit hold 'em. But even if you happen to only play in softer games, many of the key concepts presented will still help you against the other good players in your game. Winning in Tough Hold 'em Games includes an examination of pre-flop play, covering issues at a depth of sophistication which have never appeared in print before including discussions of blind stealing, re-stealing, isolating a loose player, big blind and small blind defense, and blind versus blind play. Also covered are thorough sections on playing heads-up post flop and semi-bluffing. In addition, over 50 hands, taken from high stakes online games which were played by "Stoxtrader," are presented along with appropriate discussion of the strategy involved. Book jacket.

Draughts Is More Difficult Than Chess written by Govert Westerveld and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-11-10 with Checkers categories.

Chess was a royal game while draughts was played by the seamen and soldiers and known as the "game of the proletariat". Such terms clearly classify the first game as noble and worthwhile and the second as silly or worse. Many people like to speak about the superiority of chess over the draughts. However, "simple" game does not mean "easy" game. In fact, such people only show their ignorance about these two games. Chess is not harder than draughts. The opposite is true - draughts on a 100-square board is more difficult than chess. Draughts is not easier to play well than chess. The game may seem more monotonous or less interesting than chess, but playing it really well is challenging. Any really good draughts player can play blindfolded just as really good chess players do. In this book you will observe the ideas and comments of a lot of chess and draughts players on the question of which game is more difficult - chess or draughts. You will observe that most of them came to the conclusion that draughts is more difficult than chess. It is interesting to observe that Pierre Gestem who was world champion of draughts and bridge and also a very good chess player observed that for him draughts was the most difficult game in the world. Other world champions of draughts and other chess players were of the opinion that draughts on the 100-square board is much harder than chess. Therefore, draughts can no longer be thought of as a simple game due to people's ignorance. On the other hand, the question always arises whether we can compare these two games as they are so different.
