In recent decades, metrology—an accurate and precise technology of high quality for automotive engines—has garnered a great deal of scientific interest due to its unique advanced soft engineering techniques in design and diagnostics. Used in a variety of scientific applications, these techniques are now widely regarded as safer, more efficient, and more effective than traditional ones. This book compiles and details the cutting-edge research in science and engineering from the Egyptian Metrology Institute (National Institute for Standards) that is revolutionizing advanced dimensional techniques through the development of coordinate and surface metrology.

This book, entitled The Properties of Optical Glass, is one of a series reporting on research and development activities on products and processes conducted by the Schott Group. The scientifically founded development of new products and technical processes has traditionally been of vital importance at Schott and has always been per formed on a scale determined by the prospects for application of our special glasses. The scale has increased enormously since the reconstruction of the Schott Glaswerke in Mainz. The range of expert knowledge required for that could never have been supplied by Schott alone. It is also a tradition in our company to cultivate collaboration with customers, universities, and research institutes. Publications in numerous technical journals, which since 1969 we have edited to a regular timeplan as Forschungsberichte - 'research reports' - formed the basis of this cooperation. They contain up-to-date information on the most var ious topics for the expert but are not suited as survey material for those whose standpoint is more remote. This is the point where we would like to place our series, to stimulate the exchange of thoughts, so that we can consider from different points of view the possibilities offered by those incredibly versatile materials, glass and glass ceramics. We would like to show scientists and engineers, interested customers, and friends and employees of our firm the knowledge that has been won through our research and development at Schott in cooperation with the users of our materials.

Modelling and simulation in acoustics is currently gaining importance. In fact, with the development and improvement of innovative computational techniques and with the growing need for predictive models, an impressive boost has been observed in several research and application areas, such as noise control, indoor acoustics, and industrial applications. This led us to the proposal of a special issue about “Modelling, Simulation and Data Analysis in Acoustical Problems”, as we believe in the importance of these topics in modern acoustics’ studies. In total, 81 papers were submitted and 33 of them were published, with an acceptance rate of 37.5%. According to the number of papers submitted, it can be affirmed that this is a trending topic in the scientific and academic community and this special issue will try to provide a future reference for the research that will be developed in coming years.

Materials Data for Cyclic Loading, Part E: Cast and Welded Metals discusses the various criteria for the efficient selection of cast and welded metals. The book provides the comparison of various data to indicate strength of materials under variable amplitude loading. The presented data in the text include the chemical composition, monotonic properties, cyclic properties, and failure criterion. The book also provides the monotonic and cyclic test results of the materials. The date sheet also illustrates the diagram for strain-stress curves and strain life curve along with the stress- and strain-controlled constant amplitude tests. The text will be useful to researchers and practitioners of engineering, metallurgy, and physics.

Now in its 43rd volume, the Specialist Periodical Report in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance presents comprehensive and critical reviews of the recent literature, providing the reader with an informed summary of the field from invited authors. Several chapters in this volume are devoted to biochemistry, focussing on carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins and nucleic acids; Malcolm Prior also presents a chapter examining the recent literature of NMR in living systems and Cynthia Jameson reviews the theoretical and physical aspects of nuclear shielding, while Jaroslaw Jazwinski examines the theoretical aspects of spin-spin couplings. The lead volume editor, Krystyna Kamienska-Trela, presents a chapter on the applications of spin-spin couplings. Anyone wishing to update themselves on the recent and hottest developments in NMR will benefit from this volume, which deserves a place in any library or NMR facility.
