How would you answer the man who told you that if you have not been baptized into the church he belongs to, then you are not really a Christian? What if he had Bible verses to prove it? “There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call— one Lord, one faith, one baptism” (Ephesians 4:4-5). “And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptized and wash away your sins, calling on his name” (Acts 22:16). This is what Michael Shank argues in his book, Muscle and a Shovel. He describes the Church of Christ in these words: “Plain Bible teaching with no human opinions. Allowing the Bible to speak where it speaks. A people who desire book, chapter, and verse for every belief and practice potentially prescribed to. Anything not found in the Word would be thrown aside as insufficient.” Sounds convincing, right? However, a proper understanding of Scripture goes beyond the surface-level excavation presented in Muscle and a Shovel. Digging Deeper examines Mr. Shank’s bold assertions in light of God’s Word. It will equip you to recognize the faulty interpretive methods which lead him to teach contrary to the message of the Bible. Digging Deeper also serves as an introduction to important theological categories. Biblical definitions of key terms are provided and explored, revealing the majesty of the true gospel—salvation by faith alone—while exposing a false, works-based gospel for its inability to save sinners.

What is the primary purpose of business? The standard answer is ‘making profits,’ but some visionary entrepreneurs and leaders fundamentally disagree. Instead of just making money, they choose instead to “dig deeper” and make a difference through creating real value – improving the lives of others even as they find deeper meaning in their own. These leaders build enterprises that provide identity and a sense of purpose, create positive relationships and a place to learn and thrive, embed sustainability in all that they do, and strive to improve the quality of life of all of their stakeholders. Although not their primary focus, they also make healthy profits, as their unique approach to value creation provides them with a sustainable competitive edge.Digging Deeper is a book full of inspiring stories that illustrate that there is an alternative to a myopic and narrow capitalism that trades in inequalities, exploitation, collective burnout and negative consequences for our shared natural environment. Remarkable examples from all over the world vividly demonstrate how enterprises can create real value through focusing on what the authors call the 6 Ls: long-term orientation, lasting relationships, local roots, limits recognition, developing a learning community and taking leadership responsibility seriously in its very best sense.Digging Deeper liberates the term “value” from the tight chains in which the global financial community has bound it and demonstrates that businesses can contribute to a better life for all ‒ if their leaders can go beyond viewing enterprises as single-purpose money-making machines and develop purpose-driven enterprises that create real value for all.

"Digging-Deep" is an excavation of the archaeological site called "John Sabol". It is an unearthing of the author's memory of experiences ofpast presences that cuts across space, time, and culture. Water, mining operations, dust and dirt, dogs and wolves, and ghosts are seen as important features that are re-covered from these memory excavations. Some of the re-called practices that are unearthed include an alternative remembrance of "trick or treat", the multiple symmetrical worlds of history, myth, and ghosts in Winchester, England, the haunting nature of archaeological excavations and field surveys, the actor's encounters with more than a filmed "death scene", and a search for a legendary monster in Arkansas. All of these memories are perceived as symetrically-interrelated though they originate in different places. They are viewed as a form of "theatrical ghosting", a resonating element that unfolds time, as events and activities are framed by their contemporary significance in the author's life. In this process of excavation, a re-curring haunting drama manifests in the life of this archaeologist, who also happens to be a cultural anthropologist, actor, and "ghost excavator".

Eleven years after my last divorce I moved to Boston at age 66, after a lifetime in California, to live platonically with a 23-year-old female college student. I still thought my marriages failed because I had married the wrong women--crazy women. Finally, I realized that I must have had some role in destroying these marriages. Encouraged by my roommate, I embark on a journey to uncover my role. My attitudes about marriage had been profoundly influenced by my place on the cusp between the moralistic generation of the 1940's and 1950's and the next generation that embraced "sex, drugs and rock 'n roll" as well as greater independence and equality for women. I was also deeply troubled by my choice of a career that seemed only to help the rich get richer. These issues propelled me to avoid dealing with my marriages. My memoir is a story of these marriages and divorces and uncovering my role through intense introspection and the writing process. I believe it will help others deal with issues in their own relationships, as couples and individuals face the new order in relationships and their own pasts.
