Settler societies habitually frame Indigenous people as ‘a people of the past’—their culture somehow ‘frozen’ in time, their identities tied to static notions of ‘authenticity’, and their communities understood as ‘in decline’. But this narrative erases the many ways that Indigenous people are actively engaged in future-orientated practice, including through new technologies. Indigenous Digital Life offers a broad, wide-ranging account of how social media has become embedded in the lives of Indigenous Australians. Centring on ten core themes—including identity, community, hate, desire and death—we seek to understand both the practice and broader politics of being Indigenous on social media. Rather than reproducing settler narratives of Indigenous ‘deficiency’, we approach Indigenous social media as a space of Indigenous action, production, and creativity; we see Indigenous social media users as powerful agents, who interact with and shape their immediate worlds with skill, flair and nous; and instead of being ‘a people of the past’, we show that Indigenous digital life is often future-orientated, working towards building better relations, communities and worlds. This book offers new ideas, insights and provocations for both students and scholars of Indigenous studies, media and communication studies, and cultural studies.

We all understand the power of being connected in the digital world, being on-line, with everything at our finger-tips. But what will it take to make the most of this opportunity when it comes to Indigenous Australia? This unique set of essays commissioned by the Telstra Foundation, shows how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people readily embrace the digital environment yet face a number of barriers too important to ignore when it comes to the opportunities of the digital economy. Making the Connection records a range of perspectives about the path to digital excellence: from the social media practitioner to the corporate CEO; from stakeholders in remote areas to city locations; from the academic perspectives to those who will make change happen. There are hard-won lessons and questions, but there is a firm focus on the prize - digital inclusion across Indigenous Australia and the important steps needed to get there. - Jackie Coates, Telstra Foundation

Internet on the Outstation provides a new take on the digital divide. Why do whole communities choose to go without the internet when the infrastructure for access is in place? Through an in-depth exploration of the digital practices occurring in Aboriginal households in remote central Australia, the authors address both the dynamics of internet adoption and the benefits that flow from its use. The book challenges us to think beyond the standard explanations for the digital divide, arguing that digital exclusion is not just another symptom of social exclusion. At its heart, Internet on the Outstation is a compelling examination of equality and difference in the digital age, asking: Can internet access help resolve the disadvantages associated with remote living? Internet on the Outstation is the result of a multi-year research collaboration, which included a trial of internet infrastructure, training and maintenance in three small Aboriginal communities (known as outstations).

Digital Storytelling In Indigenous Education written by Yvonne Poitras Pratt and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-07-25 with Education categories.

Exploring the relationship between the role of education and Indigenous survival, Digital Storytelling in Indigenous Education is an ethnographic exploration of how digital storytelling can be part of a broader project of decolonization of individuals, their families, and communities. By recounting how a remote Indigenous (Métis) community were able to collectively imagine, plan and produce numerous unique digital stories representing counter-narratives to the dominant version of Canadian history, Poitras Pratt provides frameworks, approaches and strategies for the use of digital media and arts for the purpose of cultural memory, community empowerment, and mobilization. The volume provides a valuable example of how a community-based educational project can create and restore intergenerational exchanges through modern media, and covers topics such as: Introducing the Métis and their community; decolonizing education through a Métis approach to research; the ethnographic journey; and translating the work of decolonizing to education. Digital Storytelling in Indigenous Education is the perfect resource for researchers, academics, and postgraduate students in the fields of Indigenous education, comparative education, and technology education, or those looking to explore the role of modern media in facilitating healing and decolonization in a marginalized community. .

Decolonising the Digital: Technology as Cultural Practice is a collection of critical essays, showcases, and interviews by Australian experimental artists, and diverse digital media theorists. The book benefits from being composed in the context of the world's oldest living peoples, Australian Aboriginal peoples, with the longest continuum of cultural practice and technologies. It offers a set of exemplary media practices from Australian artist-researchers actively creating new aesthetics and storytelling methods through innovative use of emerging digital technologies. With relevance to artists, researchers, and the wider public, it provokes critical thinking around 'technology as cultural practice', and offers tangible case-studies of experimental media practices from a range of art practitioners in diverse cultural contexts. Equal parts provocation, inspiration, and user guide to thinking about and working with emerging digital technologies in a critical way.
