About The Book: The book provides a detailed, unified treatment of theoretical and practical aspects of digital and analog communication systems, with emphasis on digital communication systems. It integrates theory-keeping theoretical details to a minimum-with over 60 practical, worked examples illustrating real-life methods. The text emphasizes deriving design equations that relate performance of functional blocks to design parameters. It illustrates how to trade off between power, band-width and equipment complexity while maintaining an acceptable quality of performance. Material is modularized so that appropriate portions can be selected to teach several different courses. The book also includes over 300 problems and an annotated bibliography in each chapter.

This book presents a systematic, comprehensive treatment of analog and discrete signal analysis and synthesis and an introduction to analog communication theory. This evolved from my 40 years of teaching at Oklahoma State University (OSU). It is based on three courses, Signal Analysis (a second semester junior level course), Active Filters (a first semester senior level course), and Digital signal processing (a second semester senior level course). I have taught these courses a number of times using this material along with existing texts. The references for the books and journals (over 160 references) are listed in the bibliography section. At the undergraduate level, most signal analysis courses do not require probability theory. Only, a very small portion of this topic is included here. I emphasized the basics in the book with simple mathematics and the soph- tication is minimal. Theorem-proof type of material is not emphasized. The book uses the following model: 1. Learn basics 2. Check the work using bench marks 3. Use software to see if the results are accurate The book provides detailed examples (over 400) with applications. A thr- number system is used consisting of chapter number – section number – example or problem number, thus allowing the student to quickly identify the related material in the appropriate section of the book. The book includes well over 400 homework problems. Problem numbers are identified using the above three-number system.

Modern Digital and Analog Communication Systemsis ideal for the first communication systems course for electrical and computer engineers; it offers its readers a consistently superb pedagogical style and explains complex subjects and concepts clearly, using both mathematics and heuristics. This new edition seamlessly incorporates many new technological advances in Lathi's trademark style of user-friendliness and high readability. The text begins byintroducing students to a panoramic view of communication systems, explaining important concepts of communication theory in a heuristic way. Only after a solid introduction to basic communication systems is analysis of communication systems requiring probability and random processes presented. The authors use real worldexamples to capture the students' attention and enable them to easily relate the course materials with their daily experience of communication tools. The text features easy-to-understand examples and MatLab exercises to clarify mathematical results and proofs. Among the newly introduced topics are spread spectrum communications and orthogonal frequency devision multiplexing (OFDM), error connection coding, soft-decoding, turbo codes and low density parity check (LDPC) codes. To better motivatevarious topics, the text provides many related applications including the latest wire-line (DSL) services, cellular systems, and the wireless local area networks (LANs). This unique text is highly informative, interactive, and accessible to beginning students as well as seasonedpractitioners.
