Thanks to Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), every action on the Internet nowadays is recorded by digital by-product data: online purchases, tagging friends’ photos, browsing webpages, etc. This unprecedented technological revolution has empowered us with unique abilities to understand not only people’s behaviours, but also online platforms. Business corporates and academic researchers alike have both embarked on actively mining such information to stay ahead of the game in the digital age. Once lost in the sea of information that is present in every corner of the Internet, we now have a better appreciation of the beauty in this rich body of information aided by improved computing power. The deconvolution of the daily records provides us with a road map that leads us to explore who we are, what we did, what we want and why we want certain things, etc. This hidden source of information is beginning to surface, as is its potential in paving the way for us to better understand our society and ourselves. This book discusses the undiscovered opportunity of using digital by-product data, which is automatically generated from all internet applications for housekeeping functions. This book then continues to examine the possibility and operability for social scientists to conduct academic research of web 2.0 applications by analysing and visualizing digital by-product data.

The concept of "Web 2.0" began with a conference brainstorming session between O'Reilly and MediaLive International. Dale Dougherty, web pioneer and O'Reilly VP, noted that far from having "crashed", the web was more important than ever, with exciting new applications and sites popping up with surprising regularity. What's more, the companies that had survived the collapse seemed to have some things in common. Could it be that the dot-com collapse marked some kind of turning point for the web, such that a call to action such as "Web 2.0" might make sense? We agreed that it did, and so the Web 2.0 Conference was born. In the year and a half since, the term "Web 2.0" has clearly taken hold, with more than 9.5 million citations in Google. But there's still a huge amount of disagreement about just what Web 2.0 means, with some people decrying it as a meaningless marketing buzzword, and others accepting it as the new conventional wisdom. This article is an attempt to clarify just what we mean by Web 2.0.

Many challenges were identified in CSCW some thirty years ago, and some of these remain problematic today. However they are being progressively transformed and this edited volume contains contributions that demonstrate how these new challenges are being dealt with in a variety of ways, reflecting the balance of rigour and creativity that has always characterised the field. Originally presented at COOP ’08 which took place in Carry-le-Rouet, France in 2008, the contributions to this volume have been substantially extended and revised. New technologies, new domains and new methods are described for supporting design and evaluation. Taking a progressive and critical stance, the authors cover a variety of themes including inter-organisational working, non task-based environments, creativity, and the development of Web 2.0 (and even Web 3.0) applications, including new cooperative mechanisms and new classification possibilities.

Whilst enterprise technology departments have been steadily building their information and knowledge management portfolios, the Internet has generated new sets of tools and capabilities which provide opportunities and challenges for improving and enriching knowledge work. This book fills the gap between strategy and technology by focussing upon the functional capabilities of Web 2.0 in corporate environments and matching these to specific types of information requirement and behaviour. It takes a resource based view of the firm: why and how can the knowledge capabilities and information assets of organisations be better leveraged using Web 2.0 tools? Identifying the underlying benefits requires the use of frameworks beyond profitability and cost control. Some of these perspectives are not in the usual business vocabulary, but when applied, demonstrate the role that can be played by Web 2.0, how to manage towards these and how to assess success. Transactive memory systems, social uncertainty, identity theory, network dynamics, complexity theory, organisational memory and the demographics of inter- generational change are not part of normal business parlance but can be used to clarify Web 2.0 application and potentiality. Written by a well-respected practitioner and academic Draws on the author’s practical experience as a technology developer, designer, senior manager and researcher Provides approaches to understanding and tackling real-world problems

The digital traces that people leave behind as they conduct their daily lives provide a powerful resource for businesses to better understand the dynamics of an otherwise chaotic society. Digital technologies have become omnipresent in our lives and we still do not fully know how to make the best use of the data these technologies could harness. Businesses leveraging big data appropriately could definitely gain a sustainable competitive advantage. With a balanced mix of texts and cases, this book discusses a variety of digital technologies and how they transform people and organizations. It offers a debate on the societal consequences of the yet unfolding technological revolution and proposes alternatives for harnessing disruptive technologies for the greater benefit of all. This book will have wide appeal to academics in technology management, strategy, marketing, and human resource management.

Essay from the year 2014 in the subject Didactics - E-Learning, grade: 10, University of Macedonia, language: English, abstract: This study investigates the second generation of the World Wide Web, called Web 2.0. The revolution of Web 2.0 over Web 1.0 was that it allowed Internet users not to be passive recipients. who simply read the digital content of a web page, but enabled them to add digital content, share information, and collaborate online. The blast of Web 2.0 is therefore largely based on the electronic sharing of knowledge and information. In this paper the basic features of Web 2.0, its basic services, functions and tools will be firstly described. Next, concepts such as social networking services and social networks will be analyzed and the application of Web 2.0 in education, as well as the benefits it can bring will be studied. In conclusion, a summary of the possibilities of Web 2.0 is made and the advantages, disadvantages and its role in the educational process are presented through a critical point of view. One of the major differences between Web 2.0 and the traditional World Wide Web is the greater collaboration between Internet users and other users such as digital service providers and businesses. While Web 1.0 was software organized around pages, technologies, and businesses, Web 2.0 was organized around ordinary people and services. In the Web 1.0 era, internet users had the ability to read the digital content of a web page but could not create their own since the only person who could update the web page content was its webmaster. In other words, we would say that Web 1.0 was not oriented towards the creation of digital content by internet users.
