*Please note that all spontaneous submissions are required to submit an abstract and await feedback before submitting the full manuscript, any spontaneous submissions which only submit a full manuscript will be rejected* Collaborative learning takes place with the expectation that people will achieve more together than alone. Crucial to this is the appropriate composition of groups and the participation of each group member through communication (written, verbal, or non-verbal) by sharing ideas, experiences, and knowledge in a diverse and elaborate way. However, collaboration is extended and substantially changed by the Internet and other technologies. The always-on connection to the Internet enables people to be in contact with peers anytime and anywhere and can help to overcome social isolation which is particularly common in digital learning contexts, not least because it can positively influence learner satisfaction. The ability to record speech and writing in a digital context encourages reflection on (one's own) contributions before they are made available to the group. Moreover, digital applications and methods can support the externalization of one's own thinking and learning processes to the group members. AI helps to investigate how collaborative learning works (e.g., through data-driven methods of learning analytics).

We are currently witnessing a significant transformation in the development of education on all levels and especially in post-secondary education. To face these challenges, higher education must find innovative and effective ways to respond in a proper way. The pandemic period left us with profound changes in the way we teach and learn, including the massive use of new means of communication, such as videoconferencing and other technological tools. Moreover, the current explosion of artificial intelligence tools, mainly used by students, is challenging teaching practices maintained for centuries. Scientifically based statements as well as excellent best practice examples are absolutely necessary. The 26th International Conference on Interactive Collaborative Learning (ICL2023), which will take place in Madrid, Spain, between 26th and 30th September 2023, will be the perfect place where to present and discuss current trends in Higher Education. Since its beginning in 1998 this conference is devoted to new approaches in learning with a focus on collaborative learning in Higher Education. Nowadays the ICL conferences are a forum of the exchange of relevant trends and research results as well as the presentation of practical experiences in Learning and Engineering Pedagogy. In this way we try to bridge the gap between ‘pure’ scientific research and the everyday work of educators.

Globalization, digitalization, and a rapid technological development of many areas of life and society, bring humanity to another level of development. Changes in the educational organizations are inevitable and the university must meet new requirements in a new paradigm (Gafurov, Safiullin, Akhmetshin, Gapsalamov, & Vasilev, 2020). Universities, as institutions capable of thinking the future, assume an increasingly relevant role at the level of the growing importance of science and its social and economic impact. In this line of thought, their metamorphosis should be promoted. This renewal requires four movements: from employability to general, humanistic, and scientific education; from the excellence of academic productivism to the valorisation of pedagogy and teaching and training work; from entrepreneurialism to a sense of community; from entrepreneurship to public responsibility (Nóvoa, 2019).
