The book examines the social and cultural role of selfies in India. It looks at how the selfie, unlike the photograph, which was a gesture towards an external reality, remains intimately self-referential, yet reconfigures social ordering, identity formation, agency, and spaces in curious ways. This volume approaches questions about the construction and performance of the self through the digital selfie and uses this situated, contextualized, and culturally specific phenomenon as a site to explore the themes of self-making, place-making, gender, subjectivity, and power. Highlighting the specific contexts of production, the authors examine the array of self-expressive capabilities realized in a multitude of uses of the selfie that simultaneously reconfigure the self, the space, and the world. An important study of visual social media culture, the volume will be useful for interpreting everyday media experiences and will be of interest to students and researchers of image studies, visual studies, photography studies, visual culture, media studies, culture studies, cultural anthropology, digital humanities, popular culture, sociology of technology, and South Asian studies.

""The Selfie Culture"" explores how selfies and social media have profoundly reshaped visual communication and our understanding of identity. The book delves into the rise of self-portraiture in the digital age, examining how smartphones have democratized photography, placing photographic tools in the hands of billions. It investigates the psychological effects of constant online self-presentation, addressing issues like self-esteem and social comparison, while also considering the economic impact of selfies, including influencer culture. The book traces the evolution of self-portraiture, from early painted portraits to modern digital selfies, providing a foundation for understanding the selfie's unique characteristics in today's digital landscape. It argues that selfies are more than just narcissistic self-promotion; they are a complex form of communication, identity construction, and social interaction. For example, selfies are used to express emotions and build communities. Organized into three sections, the book first introduces the core concepts of selfie culture. It then delves into the psychological, social, and economic impacts of selfies. Finally, the book offers a critical perspective, addressing potential pitfalls and ethical considerations. This approach provides a balanced understanding of the selfie's multifaceted role in contemporary society.

Expressive Networks convenes an urgent conversation on digital media and the social life of contemporary poetry. Tracing how poems circulate through online spaces and how capitalized platforms have come to pattern the reading and writing of poetry, contributors emphasize both the expressivist cast of digital literary culture and the deep-running ambivalence that characterizes aesthetic and critical responses to platformed cultural production. The volume features chapters on Pan- African spoken word programs, Singaporean Facebook groups, decolonial hemispheric networks, and Japanese media-critical poetries as well as platforms such as Twitter/X, Instagram, and Amazon. Though contributors write from a variety of methodological positions and address themselves to a range of archives, they share the primary conviction that the impact of Web 2.0 on literary practice is far-reaching, far from self-evident, and far more variegated and unpredictable than easy summations of social media's influence suggest. Expressive Networks asks after poetry's present and future by examining what poems themselves express about the social make-up of networked platforms. Edited by Matthew Kilbane with contributions from Cameron Awkward-Rich, Micah Bateman, Andrew Campana, Sumita Chakraborty, Scott Challener, C.R. Grimmer, Tess McNulty, Michael Nardone, Seth Perlow, Anna Preus, Susanna Sacks, Carly Schnitzler, Melanie Walsh, and Samuel Caleb Wee.

Art The Sublime And Movement written by Amanda du Preez and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-01-31 with Art categories.

This book is a critical interdisciplinary approach to the study of contemporary visual culture and image studies, exploring ideas about space and place and ultimately contributing to the debates about being human in the digital age. The upward and downward pull seem in a constant contest for humanity’s attention. Both forces are powerful in the effects and affects they invoke. When tracing this iconological history, Amanda du Preez starts in the early nineteenth century, moving into the twentieth century and then spanning the whole century up to contemporary twenty-first century screen culture and space travels. Du Preez parses the intersecting pathways between Heaven and Earth, up and down, flying and falling through the concept of being “spaced out”. The idea of being “spaced out” is applied as a metaphor to trace the visual history of sublime encounters that displace Earth, gravity, locality, belonging, home, real life, and embodiment. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, visual culture, media and cultural studies, phenomenology, digital culture, mobility studies, and urban studies.

This collection explores the cultural fascination with social media forms of self-portraiture, "selfies," with a specific interest in online self-imaging strategies in a Western context. This book examines the selfie as a social and technological phenomenon but also engages with digital self-portraiture as representation: as work that is committed to rigorous object-based analysis. The scholars in this volume consider the topic of online self-portraiture—both its social function as a technology-driven form of visual communication, as well as its thematic, intellectual, historical, and aesthetic intersections with the history of art and visual culture. This book will be of interest to scholars of photography, art history, and media studies.

The second in a two-volume series that explores the interplay between social transformation and visual culture in contemporary China, this book examines the profound changes in the cityscapes, visual regimes, and visual technologies that shape the aestheticization of everyday life. Drawing on an approach of Marxist historical materialism and interdisciplinary resources from sociology, communication, and art, this volume investigates three key aspects of visual culture in modern China: the transformation of urban landscapes and its impact on cultural autonomy and local identity; the development of visual regimes, focusing on public museums as sites for the construction of public visuality; and the role of visual technologies in reshaping everyday life, from the influence of television on traditional customs to the rise of internet subcultures. This title will provide valuable insights for scholars and students of Chinese, cultural, and urban studies, as well as readers interested in the ongoing visual transformation of contemporary Chinese society.

The Selfie Temporality And Contemporary Photography written by Claire Raymond and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-05-09 with Art categories.

This book is a theoretical examination of the relationship between the face, identity, photography, and temporality, focusing on the temporal episteme of selfie practice. Claire Raymond investigates how the selfie’s involvement with time and self emerges from capitalist ideologies of identity and time. The book leverages theories from Katharina Pistor, Jacques Lacan, Rögnvaldur Ingthorsson, and Hans Belting to explore the ways in which the selfie imposes a dominant ideology on subjectivity by manipulating the affect of time. The selfie is understood in contrast to the self-portrait. Artists discussed include James Tylor, Shelley Niro, Ellen Carey, Graham MacIndoe, and LaToya Ruby Frazier. The book will be of interest to scholars working in visual culture, history of photography, and critical theory. It will also appeal to scholars of philosophy and, in particular, of the intersection of aesthetic theory and theories of ontology, epistemology, and temporality.

Bodies And Mobile Media written by Ingrid Richardson and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-11-10 with Social Science categories.

Have you ever considered how mobile media change what we see, hear and pay attention to, or how they alter our movement through the city? Over the last decade, mobile media and communication technologies have become deeply integral to our perception and bodily experience of the world. In Bodies and Mobile Media, Ingrid Richardson and Rowan Wilken explore mobile media as a lens through which to understand how embodiment both shapes, and is shaped by, media experience. It offers a unique approach by focusing on specific sensory affordances and body parts – including the eyes, ears, face, hands and feet – to consider the uneven ratios of sensory perception at work in our engagement with mobile devices. Each chapter provides rich and accessible narratives of mobile media practices interwoven with current scholarship in media studies and phenomenology, with a concluding chapter that reflects on mobile media use as a synesthetic experience. By interpreting theoretical insights about the relationship between the body and technology, the book serves as an important work of knowledge translation. This work is crucial, the authors argue, if we are to critically understand how our perception and experience of the world are mediated by technology. This book will be of interest to students and scholars in media, communication and cultural studies.

Recent years have seen digital advertising grow to the point where it will soon overtake television as the no. 1 advertising medium. In the online environment, consumers interact and share their thoughts on brands and their experiences using them. These electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) communications have become a very important to the success of products. In today’s cluttered environment, it is especially important to study how the practice of eWOM advertising operates, and how marketers can influence eWOM in social media and other online sites. This volume starts with a chapter on the current state of knowledge on eWOM and then turns its attention to current research articles on a variety of eWOM formats. These include the posting of selfies on social media, the influence of review types on consumer perception and purchase intention, the effects of preannouncement messages, and how user-generated content can be used to induce effectiveness of eWOM on social media. The relationship of eWOM to brand building is emphasized in several of the chapters. This book was originally published as a special issue of the International Journal of Advertising.
