This book provides an overview of advanced digital image and signal processing techniques that are currently being applied in the realm of measurement systems. The book is a selection of extended versions of the best papers presented at the Sixth IEEE International Workshop on Intelligent Data Acquisition and Advanced Computing Systems: Technology and Applications IDAACS 2011 related to this topic and encompass applications that go from multidimensional imaging to evoked potential detection in brain computer interfaces. The objective was to provide a broad spectrum of measurement applications so that the different techniques and approaches could be presented.Digital Image and Signal Processing for Measurement Systems concentrates on signal processing for measurement systems and its objective is to provide a general overview of the area and an appropriate introduction to the topics considered. This is achieved through 10 chapters devoted to current topics of research addressed by different research groups within this area. These 10 chapters reflect advances corresponding to signals of different dimensionality. They go from mostly one dimensional signals in what would be the most traditional area of signal processing realm to RGB signals and to signals of very high dimensionality such as hyperspectral signals that can go up to dimensionalities of more than one thousand. The chapters have been thought out to provide an easy to follow introduction to the topics that are addressed, including the most relevant references, so that anyone interested in this field can get started in the area. They provide an overview of some of the problems in the area of signal and image processing for measurement systems and the approaches and techniques that relevant research groups within this area are employing to try to solve them which, in many instances are the state of the art of some of these topics.

Digital Signal Processing in Power System Protection and Control bridges the gap between the theory of protection and control and the practical applications of protection equipment. Understanding how protection functions is crucial not only for equipment developers and manufacturers, but also for their users who need to install, set and operate the protection devices in an appropriate manner. After introductory chapters related to protection technology and functions, Digital Signal Processing in Power System Protection and Control presents the digital algorithms for signal filtering, followed by measurement algorithms of the most commonly-used protection criteria values and decision-making methods in protective relays. A large part of the book is devoted to the basic theory and applications of artificial intelligence techniques for protection and control. Fuzzy logic based schemes, artificial neural networks, expert systems and genetic algorithms with their advantages and drawbacks are discussed. AI techniques are compared and it is also shown how they can be combined to eliminate the disadvantages and magnify the useful features of particular techniques. The information provided in Digital Signal Processing in Power System Protection and Control can be useful for protection engineers working in utilities at various levels of the electricity network, as well as for students of electrical engineering, especially electrical power engineering. It may also be helpful for other readers who want to get acquainted with and to apply the filtering, measuring and decision-making algorithms for purposes other than protection and control, everywhere fast and on-line signal analysis is needed for proper functioning of the apparatus.

In racent years the LSI technology has witnessed a revoluti onary development, and allowed substantial reductions in the size and cost of digital logic circuitry. Computer system building blocks have progressed from the level of discrete components to the level of complex ICs involving many logic circuits on a single "chip". The invention and wide applica tions of microprocessors have changed the philosophy of the signal processing, measurement and control engineering fields. The microprocessor-based digital signal processing systems and controllers have replaced the conventional ones based on standard analog and digital computing equipment. The first microprocessors and "on-chip" computers have appeared towards the end of 71 beginning 72. Their evolution since then and the number of applications, in which they have been utilized, have both been extremely spectacular. New system concepts and hardware/software tools are steadily under development to sup port the microprocessor in its multiple and complex tasks. The goal of this book is to provide a cohesive and well-balan ced set of contributions dealing with important aspects and applications of microprocessors to signal processing, measu rement and system control. The majority of contributions in clude sufficient review material and present rather complete treatments of the respective topics.

""Analog vs Digital"" offers a comprehensive exploration of the transformative shift from analog to digital technologies across three vital domains: musical instruments, imaging systems, and precision measurement tools. This technical guide masterfully breaks down the fundamental principles of signal processing and conversion methods, illuminating how continuous analog signals become discrete digital data in modern systems. The book's systematic approach begins with core physical principles before diving into specific applications. In the musical instruments section, readers discover how digital technology has revolutionized sound creation and recording, while the imaging systems chapter traces the evolution from traditional film to modern digital sensors. The final section on measurement tools provides crucial insights into the relative strengths of analog and digital instrumentation, supported by detailed technical data and real-world case studies from recording studios and scientific laboratories. What sets this book apart is its balanced, objective examination of both technologies, acknowledging digital precision while respecting analog's unique characteristics. Through mathematical models, circuit diagrams, and practical exercises, it makes complex concepts accessible to engineering students and professionals alike. The inclusion of interdisciplinary connections to computer science and physics, combined with its focus on quantifiable parameters rather than subjective preferences, makes it an invaluable resource for anyone working in electrical engineering or electronics.
