A digital library is a library in which a significant proportion of the resources are available in machine-readable format, accessible by means of computers. The digital content may be locally held or accessed remotely via computer networks. Library Science is a modern discipline. Earlier regarded as storehouses for preservation of manuscripts and books for reading and reference purposes, publicly or privately, the functions of library today have assumed multifold dimensions today. Although digital libraries are intended to support education and knowledge work, current digital library interfaces are narrowly focused on retrieval. Furthermore, they are designed for desktop computers with keyboards, mice, and high-speed network connections. A digital library is a collection of documents in organized electronic form, available on the Internet or on CD-ROM (compact-disk read-only memory) disks. Depending on the specific library, a user may be able to access magazine articles, books, papers, images, sound files, and videos. The application of information technology in libraries results in increased operational efficiency. The IT increases productivity of library staff. It relieves professional staff from mundane jobs that involves a lot of duplication so that they can be fruitfully used for user-oriented library services. It improves quality of services rendered by the library. The applications of digital system and computing system in the libraries have been a subject of interest to present day professional librarians. The prospects of application of Information Technology in Library and Information Services are many fold and in today's time of rapid development in the field of science and technology, we can not remain untouched by it. Libraries today must deal with electronic resources that are available 'within' the library but are neither owned nor shelved by the library. Libraries also have the additional challenge of providing access to 'cyber visitors' who use the library's web site for research. This book fulfills the long felt necessity of a text dealing with concepts of this subject.-- Back cover.

These internet users can be volunteers or paid, work consciously, unconsciously or in the form of games. They can provide the workforce, skills, knowledge or financial resources that libraries need in order to achieve unimaginable goals.

An Emergent Theory Of Digital Library Metadata written by Getaneh Alemu and has been published by Chandos Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-08-08 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

An Emergent Theory of Digital Library Metadata is a reaction to the current digital library landscape that is being challenged with growing online collections and changing user expectations. The theory provides the conceptual underpinnings for a new approach which moves away from expert defined standardised metadata to a user driven approach with users as metadata co-creators. Moving away from definitive, authoritative, metadata to a system that reflects the diversity of users’ terminologies, it changes the current focus on metadata simplicity and efficiency to one of metadata enriching, which is a continuous and evolving process of data linking. From predefined description to information conceptualised, contextualised and filtered at the point of delivery. By presenting this shift, this book provides a coherent structure in which future technological developments can be considered. Metadata is valuable when continuously enriched by experts and users Metadata enriching results from ubiquitous linkin Metadata is a resource that should be linked openly The power of metadata is unlocked when enriched metadata is filtered for users individually
