Climate Change And Natural Disasters written by Vinod Thomas and has been published by Transaction Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-01-31 with Business & Economics categories.

The start of the new millennium will be remembered for deadly climate-related disasters—the great floods in Thailand in 2011, Super Storm Sandy in the United States in 2012, and Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines in 2013, to name a few. In 2014, 17.5 million people were displaced by climate-related disasters, ten times more than the 1.7 million displaced by geophysical hazards. What is causing the increase in natural disasters and what effect does it have on the economy? Climate Change and Natural Disasters sends three messages: human-made factors exert a growing influence on climate-related disasters; because of the link to anthropogenic factors, there is a pressing need for climate mitigation; and prevention, including climate adaptation, ought not to be viewed as a cost to economic growth but as an investment. Ultimately, attention to climate-related disasters, arguably the most tangible manifestation of global warming, may help mobilize broader climate action. It can also be instrumental in transitioning to a path of low-carbon, green growth, improving disaster resilience, improving natural resource use, and caring for the urban environment. Vinod Thomas proposes that economic growth will become sustainable only if governments, political actors, and local communities combine natural disaster prevention and controlling climate change into national growth strategies. When considering all types of capital, particularly human capital, climate action can drive economic growth, rather than hinder it.

The focus of each chapter in the book is on the potential for agroforestry to address pressing issues such as sustainability, food, fodder, nutrition, and environmental security, as well as to offer, support, regulate, and to provide cultural services to society. Some of the devoted chapters in the book also go into detail on the scope and restrictions of agroforestry owing to existing regional and climatic barriers/problems, in addition to in-depth discussion of prospects of agroforestry in changed climate scenarios to cater to current and future needs. The major focus of this book is to aggregate up-to-date and recent agroforestry research studies/achievements to make them accessible to all the stakeholders for their use and to disseminate how agroforestry systems are playing a crucial role in tackling many difficulties during the changing climate and environmental crisis. The stakeholders find this book helpful in learning agroforestry and its importance in situations with changing climatic conditions across the globe. Additionally, it may also be helpful for policy makers for formulating policies pertaining to the adaptation and mitigation of climate change, the conservation of natural resources, and food and nutritional security, including sustainable development through agroforestry.

Climate Change Resilience In Rural Southern Africa written by Mark Matsa and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-12-17 with Science categories.

In rural Southern Africa, the livelihoods of millions are intricately linked to the land, water, and ecosystems that are increasingly under threat from climate change. This intensifying threat has exacerbated pre-existing vulnerabilities, rendering the need for resilience building more critical than ever. Emerging scholarship on climate change strategies suggest that building resilience in human and environmental systems is the ideal strategy for combating the climate change induced catastrophes. Rural Southern Africa has witnessed both isolated and coordinated efforts by various stakeholders to bolster climate resilience, yielding varying degrees of success. This book offers a comprehensive examination of the rural Southern African landscape, probing the intricate dynamics, prospects, and challenges associated with building climate resilience. It examines how traditional knowledge, innovative practices (including Artificial Intelligence), and sustainable development strategies are converging to create resilient systems. The book further highlights the critical role of local communities in addressing climate challenges and offers actionable insights for a more resilient future. It emerged that some interventions have managed to build resilience of at-risk households, communities and systems, while others have faced significant challenges. In general, climate resilience building remains complex and lagging due to increased vulnerabilities induced by global disease emergencies such as COVID-19, increased poverty due to global recessions, poor governance, corruption and several other internal and external factors. Therefore, the need to increase cooperation amongst Southern African states to pursue common development goals cannot be overemphasized. Rich with case studies, expert analyses, and systematic reviews, this book is an essential read for policymakers, researchers, and those invested in the future of rural Southern Africa.

Explainable IoT Application: A Demystification is an in-depth guide that examines the intersection of the Internet of Things (IoT) with AI and Machine Learning, focusing on the crucial need for transparency and interpretability in IoT systems. As IoT devices become more integrated into daily life, from smart homes to industrial automation, it is increasingly important to understand and trust the decisions they make. The book starts by covering the basics of IoT, highlighting its importance in modern technology and its wide-ranging applications in fields such as healthcare, transportation, and smart cities. It then delves into the concept of explainability, stressing the need to prevent IoT systems from being perceived as opaque, black-box operations. The authors explore various techniques and methods for achieving explainability, including rule-based systems and machine learning models, while also addressing the challenge of balancing explainability with performance. Through practical examples, the book shows how explainability can be successfully implemented in IoT applications, such as in smart healthcare systems. Furthermore, the book addresses the significant challenges of securing IoT systems in an increasingly connected world. It examines the unique vulnerabilities that come with the widespread use of IoT devices, such as data breaches, cyberattacks, and privacy issues, and discusses the complexities of managing these risks. The authors emphasize the importance of implementing security strategies that strike a balance between fostering innovations and protecting user data. The book concludes with a comprehensive exploration of the challenges and opportunities in making IoT systems more transparent and interpretable, offering valuable insights for researchers, developers, and decision-makers aiming to create IoT applications that are both trustworthy and understandable.

The European Union is closing the digital gap with the United States. More than half of European firms invested in digitalisation during the COVID-19 pandemic, and they are rapidly catching up with their US peers in implementing advanced digital technologies. Despite the progress, however, Europe is not well positioned in digital innovation, and it is at risk of developing dependencies in several critical technologies. Some key takeaways: Digitalisation has helped European firms adjust at a time of repeated economic shocks. Digital firms also tend to be more productive. Successfully managing the digital transition and taking advantage of its long-term benefits goes beyond technology adoption – it requires societal change. Firms' digitalisation depends on several factors, such as adequate digital infrastructure, competition-friendly regulation and labor market skills. The report, Digitalisation in Europe 2022-2023 : Evidence from the EIB Investment Survey, uses data collected from firms to shed light on the progress small and medium firms in Europe are making on digitalisation.

Unveiling developmental disparities in the Middle East is essential for understanding the complex socio-economic landscape of the region, often containing critical inequalities and varied economic growth. Despite being rich in resources and cultural heritage, many countries in the Middle East face significant challenges, including political instability, economic volatility, and social unrest, which hinder equitable development. Examining these factors contributing to inequality may help scholars and government officials better address the barriers to sustainable development. Understanding present disparities in the region is crucial for policymakers, international organizations, and communities aiming to promote inclusive growth and improved quality of life. Unveiling Developmental Disparities in the Middle East examines the role of international relations and domestic policies in shaping Middle Eastern economic outcomes, with a particular focus on how governance and institutional development have diverged across these regions. By examining the influence of oil wealth, geopolitical dynamics, and historical legacies, the book offers a comprehensive understanding of why these nations have evolved so differently despite geographical proximity and cultural ties. This book covers topics such as sustainability, gender studies, and political governance, and is a useful resource for government officials, policymakers, gender scientists, healthcare professionals, environmental scientists, academicians, and researchers.
