The Information and Communications for Development series looks in depth at how information and communications technologies are affecting economic growth in developing countries. This new report, the fourth in the series, examines the topic of data-driven development, or how better information makes for better policies. The objective is to assist developing-country firms and governments in unlocking the value of the data they hold for better service delivery and decision making and to empower individuals to take more control of their personal data.We are undoubtedly experiencing a data revolution in which our ability to generate, process, and utilize information has been magnified many times over by the machines that we increasingly rely upon. This report is about how the data revolution is changing the behavior of governments, individuals, and firms and how these changes affect the nature of development: economic, social, and cultural. How can governments extract value from data to improve service delivery in the same way that private companies have learned to do for profit? Is it feasible for individuals to take ownership of their own data and to use it to improve their livelihoods and quality of life? Can developing-country firms compete with the internet majors on their own turf and be even more innovative in their use of data to serve local customers better? Though the report is aimed primarily at government policy makers, it also has great relevance for individuals concerned about how their personal data is used and how the data revolution might affect their future job prospects. For private sector firms, particularly those in developing countries, the report suggests how they might expand their markets and improve their competitive edge. For development professionals, the report provides guidance on how they might use data more creatively to tackle long-standing global challenges, such as eliminating extreme poverty, promoting shared prosperity, or mitigatingthe effects of climate change. The report’s chapters explore different themes associated with the supply of data, the technology underlying it, and the demand for it. An overview chapter focuses on government use of data and presentation of definitions. Part I of the report then looks at the “supply side” of the data sector, with chapters on data connectivity and capacity (where data comes from, how it is stored, and where it goes) and data technology (specifically big data analytics and artificial intelligence) and how this is contributing to development. Part II looks at the sector’s “demand side,” with a chapter on people’s use of data and another that examines how firms use digital platforms in the data economy and how that contributes to competitiveness. Part III brings together the policy implications for developing-country stakeholders, with a chapter considering government policies for data, including data protection and privacy. A closing Data Notes appendix looks at statistical indicators associated with the use of data and presents the 2018 update of the Digital Adoption Index (DAI), a composite indicator introduced in the 2016 World Development Report: Digital Dividends.

This is an open access book. International School - Vietnam National University Hanoi, Hanoi University of Science and Technology – School of Economics and Management, University of Economics and Business - Vietnam National University, Hanoi, National Economics University – Faculty of Business Management, The University of Danang – University of Economics, University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City, Foreign Trade University, University of Economics – Hue University, University of Hertfordshire (UK), AVSE Global (France), PPM School of Management (Indonesia), EM Normandie Business School (France) will organize the 12th International Conference on Emerging Challenges: Sustainable Strategies in the Data–driven Economy) in Thanh Hoa, Vietnam on November 1–2, 2024. We would like to invite you to be a part of the ICECH2024 and submit your research papers for presentation. The details are as follows: Thanks to the juggernaut technological development (especially in the context of the Industrial Revolution 4.0), such as greater data availability and the increasing popularity of the Internet, governments, firms, and people are utilizing data (especially big data) to improve their decision-making, boost productivity, understand citizens and/or customers’ needs and behaviours, meet a greater variety of demands and many others benefits. It is undeniable that the data-driven economy features powerful economies of scale, economies of scope, network externalities in many sectors, and pervasive information asymmetry. Businesses globally are experiencing a significant increase in digitalization, leading to a surge in data volumes and emphasizing the need for enterprises to prioritize data-driven approaches. Data is becoming a crucial company asset, and its value relies on effectively utilizing it to produce actionable insights for strategic decision-making. In addition to the challenges that businesses are facing in the data-driven economy, over the past few years, the world has been gripped with rising uncertainties and significant challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine or the Israel-Hamas conflicts. These issues, coupled with current, lingering problems such as climate change, do pose significant threats to economies and companies around the world. In response to these challenges, governments and firms have adopted sustainability-oriented approaches such as the digitalization and/or digital transformation of business activities, the pursuant of sustainable development goals (SDGs), or the adoption of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices. In the context of coupling challenges, as mentioned above, it is essential to discuss the solutions that businesses should take to be resilient in uncertain contexts and achieve sustainable development. Thus, ICECH2024 aims to provide a forum for academics and professionals to share research findings, experiences, and knowledge with respect to the craft, implementation and effects of sustainable strategies in a data-driven global economy. The ICECH2024 Conference will focus on (but not limited to) Asia-Pacific nations. We welcome submissions in the following areas: Economics, Business Law, Management, Finance and Banking, Innovation and Technology, Accounting and Auditing.

Tourism And Hospitality For Sustainable Development written by Emmanuel Ndhlovu and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-08-27 with Business & Economics categories.

The tourism and hospitality industry is rapidly undergoing a disruptive transformation owing to advances in information and communications technology. This book aims to highlight how the unfolding digital transformation trends help the industry attain sustainable development by taking full account of its current and future economic, social, and environmental impacts and addressing the needs of tourists, the industry, the environment, and destinations. With the advent of digital technologies following the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), there has been a rapid change in how customers and businesses interact regarding the timeliness and relevance of communication. Although the positive effects of digital transformation have received sustained scholarly interest, its adverse effects, as well as how the digitisation of tourism operations can enable the achievement of sustainable development, have attracted limited academic focus. The book comprises contributions that generate theoretical insights, empirical findings, and evidence-based recommendations by focusing on emerging and forecasted technologies used in the tourism and hospitality industry, such as blockchains, robots, Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Reality, big data, and analytics. The book could be helpful for future research to focus on the impact of different forms of digital technology by examining their sociocultural and environmental effects. Building on prior research, the chapters in this volume extrapolate current studies on digital development to provide more links to tourism and hospitality.
