Dil ile toplum ilişkisi üzerinde 18., 19. yüzyıllardan bu yana durulmaktadır. Daha o yüzyıllarda devlet adamı, düşünür ve dilci olan W. von Humboldt (1767-1835), dilin gelişmesini toplumda olan değişmeler, kültür ve düşünce alanındaki gelişmelerle açıklamaktadır. Toplumda olan değişmeler ise tek yönde olmaz. Toplumun bütün dalları birbirine bağlıdır. Bir yönde olan değişmeler, öteki yönleri de etkiler. Bir başka deyişle “toplumun bütün dalları birbirine bağlı olarak değişir” (AKARSU, 1955:85). Cumhuriyet döneminde Türkiyede toplum yapısındaki değişmeleri eğitim düzenindeki, yazıdaki, kılık kıyafetteki daha pek çok değişikliğin izlemesi de toplum dallarının tek yönde değişmediğini kanıtlamaktadır. Son yıllarda da Türkiye’de tek bir alanda değil pek çok alanda birden olan değişiklikler dile yansımıştır. Dışa açılmak, özelleştirmek, kamu ortaklığı, toplu konut, kesin dönüş, tam üyelik, vergi iadesi, sivilleştirmek, çocuk mahkemeleri, serbest kur, piyasa ekonomisi, hayali ihracat, paralı askerlik, hazır kahve vb. daha nice söz öbekleri toplumsal yapının çeşitli dallarıyla birlikte değişmesine tanıktır. Toplumsal alandaki her şey dilde de anlatım bulduğu için onu sürekli değişken kılmaktadır. Sözün kısası, “evrende değişmeyen tek şey her şeyin değiştiğidir” kuralı toplum ve dil ilişkisinde de geçerliliğini sürdürmektedir.
