Singapore’s Malay (Muslim) community, constituting about 15 per cent of the total population and constitutionally enshrined as the indigenous people of Singapore, have had its fair share of progress and problems in the history of this country. This academic initiative fills this obvious literature gap. Scholars and researchers in particular and the public in general should find this Bibliography a highly valuable, indispensable source of information about the rich and varied life of Singapore’s Malay/Muslim community, stretching a period of two centuries – from the time of Stamford Raffles in 1819 until today. Dalam rekonstruksi tersebut juga terungkap upaya bangsa-bangsa Asia Tenggara mempertahankan kemerdekaan, baik dengan senjata maupun diplomasi, sehingga untuk mencapai tujuan itu bangsa-bangsa Asia Tenggara menggunakan strategi yang berbeda-beda karena tantangannya juga berbeda-beda. Setelah berhasil mempertahankan kemerdekaannya dan mengatasi ancaman konflik antarnegara, bangsa-bangsa di Asia Tenggara memasuki masa konsolidasi kawasan yang mengarah ke bentuk kerja sama regional. Kondisi tersebut dimungkinkan karena adanya perubahan-perubahan politik regional maupun internasional. Runtuhnya Uni Soviet menyebabkan negara-negara komunis di Asia Tenggara lepas dari ketergantungan pada negara raksasa komunis itu sekaligus memperkuat rasa kebangsaannya. Sementara itu perubahan politik di Indonesia dengan munculnya Presiden Soeharto, menyebarkan angin damai ke kawasan Asia Tenggara. Kondisi tersebut mendorong lahirnya ASEAN. Buku ini penting bagi mahasiswa Sejarah, guru sejarah, serta generasi muda umumnya sebagai generasi penerus pencapaian cita-cita nasional dengan membina zona damai, bebas, dan netral di Asia Tenggara.
