This paper examines hiring as a balance between efficiency and equality. When hiring, firms aim to minimize the cost of screening and selecting job applicants, while they should also strive for gender equality. Indeed, modern hiring algorithms are designed for reducing costs. However, existing research shows that AI technologies based on predictive algorithms may be biased against women. This paper investigates the impact of assessment software on gender inequality when the software fully automates hiring. By analyzing data from a private firm's recruitment process and developing a resume screening algorithm, I show that not only does the algorithm select four times as many female applicants, but it also significantly improves the quality of the selected candidates.

Guaranteeing a high-quality deliverable is impossible without the best team members on a project; however, sometimes the human resourcing options for a project management office (PMO) often consist of a core number of full-time employees augmented by full-time contractors working in various delivery roles. This article discusses how the right combination of resourcing and management can help (PMOs) overcome staffing shortages without compromising quality. It explains how a PMO needs a resourcing model that enables it to support critical services, yet is flexible enough to ramp up and down resources to meet peak and weak demand. It then looks at how some organizations address this problem. The article details how a PMO may have to enter into agreements with multiple vendors to provide specialist resources to help meet the shortfall of team members on an organization's projects. Then it explores integrating vendor resources with the PMO's work ethic and culture. Additionally, it highlights how a PMO should enforce a robust governance model to manage vendor contracts. The article examines the type of personnel needed by the PMO and suggests ways to reduce employees' boredom. It also discusses staff training.

When hiring for an open position, the branch manager of Intermountain Trust Bancorp was challenged with an ethical dilemma he was not anticipating. An internal applicant challenged the hiring manager's ethical values by insisting that their friendship and other external employment factors be taken into consideration in the hiring decision. This is a classic case of a candidate using undue influence1 to manipulate a colleague and gain employment. In what started as a routine decision, the manager was faced with an unforeseen ethical quagmire. This case describes a real situation that had local impact on the stakeholders of a regional bank and provides a true example of the types of difficult situations that can affect candidate selection in hiring decisions.

Originally published in 1996, Workers’ Dilemmas analyses the management skills of those with least resources, the women of the urban poor, and finds that there is an abundance of evidence on the high levels of managerial competence within this group. It is information which has largely been hidden from history. This study of poor women’s involvement in the world of work corrects this missing record. For over a century (1850–1960s), women and children travelled from their urban homes in the East End of London to work in the hop picking fields of Kent and Hampshire. The scale of the annual migration and the complexity of neighbourhood and household organization it required to provide this volume of labour have escaped the literature. Drawing on a variety of historical records and on oral history, this book explores the high level of management and occupational skills possessed by the urban poor in their construction of household survival strategies. Above all this book highlights the key entrepreneurial role played by women in this labour market and the importance of the financial support provided by this regular seasonal labour for household survival. Workers’ Dilemmas provides a fresh look at how work patterns, family structure and community networks interrelate and in the process challenges accepted ideas in the wider fields of anthropology and the sociology of work.

A relatively new phenomenon in recruitment and selection is the unhiring dilemma: New hires who were promised employment after graduation but now find their job offers rescinded or delayed. In study 1, we use a scenario context to examine how job rescissions and delays, along with four different compensation alternatives, influence new hire judgments of organizational attractiveness and organizational justice. We find that for those whose jobs were delayed, compensation structures that provide increasingly favorable outcomes are viewed more positively, but for those whose jobs were rescinded, the most favorable evaluations occurred upon receipt of lump sum compensation - in other words, the compensation outcome that also immediately severs the relationship between the rebuffed new hire and the company. In Study 2, we interviewed a small sample of MBA graduates who had job offers rescinded or delayed. Here, we find additional evidence or linear effects in that more positive unhiring outcomes (e.g., job delays or rescissions with compensation) lead to enhanced organizational attractiveness and procedural justice judgments.

A guide to the early decisions that can make or break startup ventures Often downplayed in the excitement of starting up a new business venture is one of the most important decisions entrepreneurs will face: should they go it alone, or bring in cofounders, hires, and investors to help build the business? More than just financial rewards are at stake. Friendships and relationships can suffer. Bad decisions at the inception of a promising venture lay the foundations for its eventual ruin. The Founder's Dilemmas is the first book to examine the early decisions by entrepreneurs that can make or break a startup and its team. Drawing on a decade of research, Noam Wasserman reveals the common pitfalls founders face and how to avoid them. He looks at whether it is a good idea to cofound with friends or relatives, how and when to split the equity within the founding team, and how to recognize when a successful founder-CEO should exit or be fired. Wasserman explains how to anticipate, avoid, or recover from disastrous mistakes that can splinter a founding team, strip founders of control, and leave founders without a financial payoff for their hard work and innovative ideas. He highlights the need at each step to strike a careful balance between controlling the startup and attracting the best resources to grow it, and demonstrates why the easy short-term choice is often the most perilous in the long term. The Founder's Dilemmas draws on the inside stories of founders like Evan Williams of Twitter and Tim Westergren of Pandora, while mining quantitative data on almost ten thousand founders. People problems are the leading cause of failure in startups. This book offers solutions.
