The term 'New world' carries multiple connotations. While it traditionally denotes newly discovered territories, such as the American continent, in this context, it signifies the profound and transformative shift that the world has undergone over the past three centuries. This shift, which finds its roots in the Enlightenment and modernity, began to manifest itself more prominently after the First World War. While this transformation is often equated with globalization, its origins can be traced back to the era of industrialization and the rise of nation-states, which set the stage for subsequent global shifts. Dilemma is a subject of logic, but it is also used in daily life. In daily use, it often evokes contradictory situations. It is expected to correspond to inextricable, knotted, cyclical situations. What I mean by the dilemmas of the new world is the social order and view of the universe that humanity has lived in since the age of curiosity, that is, from the middle of the 18th century to the present day, at least ten thousand years since the world transitioned to agricultural society, the fact that the understanding of morality and most importantly, the meaning it attributes to its existence have brought with them insurmountable problems despite the changes in direction. While this new era was a game changer on the one hand, on the other hand, the meaning that man attributed to himself in every new thing he discovered with the development of science and technology was shaken. Existentialism emerged as a result of this new state of thinking. While the new attribution of meaning isolated man on the one hand, on the other hand, nation-states consisting of human communities gathered around a common ideal were established. Individual freedoms and gathering around a common goal became in conflict at some points. While humanism, the most crucial emphasis of the Enlightenment, glorified human beings on the one hand, on the other hand, there were significant obstacles to free thought. On the other hand, while the religious sentiments to which human beings were attached to give meaning to their existence were shaken, new meanings could not be found to replace them. While observations and findings show that the earth is far beyond the centre of the universe, the discovery that man is descended from animals has deeply affected religious beliefs, at least by the world of science and people who believe in the guidance of science. For man, who had to somehow hold on to life, these new teachings could not offer him any. In this state, the world needed new motives and new beliefs. At this very stage, capitalism came to the rescue of humanity. The new system, which pushed man to become a commodity owner, did not give him time to question himself.

This book contextualises and details Herman Melville's artistic career and outlines the relationship between Melville and Ralph Waldo Emerson. Michael McLoughlin divides Melville's professional career as a novelist into two major phases corresponding to the growth and shift in his art. In the developmental phase, from 1845 to 1850, Melville wrote his five Transcendental novels of the sea, in which he defended self-reliance, attacked conformity, and learned to employ Transcendental symbols of increasing complexity. This phase culminates in Moby-Dick , with its remarkable matching of Transcendental idealism with tragic drama, influenced by Hawthorne. After 1851, Melville endeavoured to find new ways to express himself and to re-envision human experience philosophically. In this period of transition, Melville wrote anti-Transcendental fiction attacking self-reliance as well as conformity and substituting fatalism for Emersonian optimism. According to McLoughlin, Moby-Dick represents an important transitional moment in Herman Melville's art, dramatically altering tendencies inherent in the novels from Typee onward; in contrast to Melville's blithely exciting and largely optimistic first six novels of the sea, Melville's later works - beginning with his pivotal epic Moby-Dick - assume a much darker and increasingly anti-Transcendental philosophical position.

In this volume, fifteen scholars from the United States, Spain, Puerto Rico, and Colombia discuss the social implications of new technologies. Their essays address the cultural worlds that crystallize around technologies, the challenges to democracy that they pose, and the responsibility of modern technology for forcing a public response to new social and moral issues. Three themes define the three sections into which the volume is divided: "New Worlds," "New Technologies," and "New Issues." The essays in the section "New Worlds" range from optimism that new technologies will produce a better world than that of 1992, through a nonjudgmental discussion of the transformation of our "lifeworld" that new technologies are effecting, to deep concern for the viability of the world that modern technology has already created. In "New Technologies," the focus is on political responses to modern technologies. The authors in this section see the challenge to understanding and controlling our technological world in reshaping existing relations of social power and authority, and in creating new institutions more adequate to the sociopolitical realities of the process of technological innovation. While the contributors in the first two sections of the volume argue that broad changes in values and institutions are preconditions of a more beneficent relationship among people, nature, and technology, those in the section "New Issues" adopt narrower, more specific, viewpoints. Their essays address the political values underlying the Deep Ecology movement, the ethics of military technologies, the capacity of democratic institutions for a public role in setting technology policies, and science and technology literacy mechanisms. Collectively, these essays reflect the growing international concern with the role played by technological innovation in a rapidly changing world, and they point toward the formulation of concrete political platforms for informed social responses to the innovation process.
