We give several results on necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of special classes of maps from one shift of finite type onto another of the same entropy. The classes we study include eventual right closing maps, common right closing extensions, and stable right closing maps. Some analogous results for sofic systems are also given. The necessary and sufficient conditions are described algebraically in terms of the dimension group associated to a shift of finite type by W. Krieger.

Urban Ecosystem Services written by Alessio Russo and has been published by MDPI this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-05-07 with Science categories.

The school of thought surrounding the urban ecosystem has increasingly become in vogue among researchers worldwide. Since half of the world’s population lives in cities, urban ecosystem services have become essential to human health and wellbeing. Rapid urban growth has forced sustainable urban developers to rethink important steps by updating and, to some degree, recreating the human–ecosystem service linkage. Assessing, as well as estimating the losses of ecosystem services can denote the essential effects of urbanization and increasingly indicate where cities fall short. This book contains 13 thoroughly refereed contributions published within the Special Issue “Urban Ecosystem Services”. The book addresses topics such as nature-based solutions, green space planning, green infrastructure, rain gardens, climate change, and more. The contributions highlight new findings for landscape architects, urban planners, and policymakers. Important future cities research is considered by looking at the system connectivity between the social and ecological sphere—via varying forms of urban planning, management, and governance. The book is supported by methods and models that utilize an urban sustainability and ecosystem service-centric focus by adding knowledge-base and real-world solutions into the urbanization phenomenon.

Behavior And The Natural Environment written by Irwin Altman and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Psychology categories.

The theme of the present volume concerns people' s response to the natural environment, considered at scales varying from that of a house hold plant to that of vast wilderness areas. Our decision to focus on this particular segment of the physical environment was prompted in part by the intrinsic interest in this subject on the part of a diverse group of sodal scientists and professionals-and of laypersons, for that matter and in part by the relative neglect of this topic in standard treatments of the environment-behavior field. It also serves to bring out once again the interdisdplinary nature of that field, and we are pleased to have been able to inc1ude representatives from geography, sodology, soda! ecology, and natural recreation among our contributors. We believe that this volume will serve a useful purpose in helping to integrate the find ings and concepts in this presently somewhat fragmented field, scat tered as they are over a very diverse array of publications representing a similarly varied group of spedalties. It is hoped that the result will be to stimulate future development of this area and to add a measure of in creased coherence to it. Volume 7 of our series will be devoted to the theme of elderly people and the environment, with M. Powell Lawton joining us as guest co-editor. This book consists of lecture notes for a semester-long introductory graduate course on dynamical systems and chaos taught by the authors at Texas A&M University and Zhongshan University, China. There are ten chapters in the main body of the book, covering an elementary theory of chaotic maps in finite-dimensional spaces. The topics include one-dimensional dynamical systems (interval maps), bifurcations, general topological, symbolic dynamical systems, fractals and a class of infinite-dimensional dynamical systems which are induced by interval maps, plus rapid fluctuations of chaotic maps as a new viewpoint developed by the authors in recent years. Two appendices are also provided in order to ease the transitions for the readership from discrete-time dynamical systems to continuous-time dynamical systems, governed by ordinary and partial differential equations. Table of Contents: Simple Interval Maps and Their Iterations / Total Variations of Iterates of Maps / Ordering among Periods: The Sharkovski Theorem / Bifurcation Theorems for Maps / Homoclinicity. Lyapunoff Exponents / Symbolic Dynamics, Conjugacy and Shift Invariant Sets / The Smale Horseshoe / Fractals / Rapid Fluctuations of Chaotic Maps on RN / Infinite-dimensional Systems Induced by Continuous-Time Difference Equations

Machine Learning For Evolution Strategies written by Oliver Kramer and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-05-25 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This book introduces numerous algorithmic hybridizations between both worlds that show how machine learning can improve and support evolution strategies. The set of methods comprises covariance matrix estimation, meta-modeling of fitness and constraint functions, dimensionality reduction for search and visualization of high-dimensional optimization processes, and clustering-based niching. After giving an introduction to evolution strategies and machine learning, the book builds the bridge between both worlds with an algorithmic and experimental perspective. Experiments mostly employ a (1+1)-ES and are implemented in Python using the machine learning library scikit-learn. The examples are conducted on typical benchmark problems illustrating algorithmic concepts and their experimental behavior. The book closes with a discussion of related lines of research.

Praise for the first edition: "[This book] succeeds singularly at providing a structured introduction to this active field of research. ... it is arguably the most accessible overview yet published of the mathematical ideas and principles that one needs to master to enter the field of high-dimensional statistics. ... recommended to anyone interested in the main results of current research in high-dimensional statistics as well as anyone interested in acquiring the core mathematical skills to enter this area of research." —Journal of the American Statistical Association Introduction to High-Dimensional Statistics, Second Edition preserves the philosophy of the first edition: to be a concise guide for students and researchers discovering the area and interested in the mathematics involved. The main concepts and ideas are presented in simple settings, avoiding thereby unessential technicalities. High-dimensional statistics is a fast-evolving field, and much progress has been made on a large variety of topics, providing new insights and methods. Offering a succinct presentation of the mathematical foundations of high-dimensional statistics, this new edition: Offers revised chapters from the previous edition, with the inclusion of many additional materials on some important topics, including compress sensing, estimation with convex constraints, the slope estimator, simultaneously low-rank and row-sparse linear regression, or aggregation of a continuous set of estimators. Introduces three new chapters on iterative algorithms, clustering, and minimax lower bounds. Provides enhanced appendices, minimax lower-bounds mainly with the addition of the Davis-Kahan perturbation bound and of two simple versions of the Hanson-Wright concentration inequality. Covers cutting-edge statistical methods including model selection, sparsity and the Lasso, iterative hard thresholding, aggregation, support vector machines, and learning theory. Provides detailed exercises at the end of every chapter with collaborative solutions on a wiki site. Illustrates concepts with simple but clear practical examples.

This volume contains a sequence of reviews presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on 'Low Dimensional Structures in Semiconductors ... from Basic Physics to Applications.' This was part of the International School of Materials Science and 1990 at the Ettore Majorana Centre in Sicily. Technology held in July Only a few years ago, Low Dimensional Structures was an esoteric concept, but now it is apparent they are likely to playa major role in the next generation of electronic devices. The theme of the School acknowledged this rapidly developing maturity.' The contributions to the volume consider not only the essential physics, but take a wider view of the topic, starting from material growth and processing, then prog ressing right through to applications with some discussion of the likely use of low dimensional devices in systems. The papers are arranged into four sections, the first of which deals with basic con cepts of semiconductor and low dimensional systems. The second section is on growth and fabrication, reviewing MBE and MOVPE methods and discussing the achievements and limitations of techniques to reduce structures into the realms of one and zero dimensions. The third section covers the crucial issue of interfaces while the final section deals with devices and device physics.
