This book is devoted to the inhabitants of the Spanish–Portuguese borderlands during the early modern period. It seeks to challenge a predominant historiography focused on the study of borderlands societies, relying exclusively on the antagonistic topics of subversion and the construction of boundaries. It states that by focusing just on one concept or another there is a restrictive understanding tending to condition the agency of local communities by external narratives. Thus, if traditionally border people were reduced by some scholars to actors of a struggle against a supposedly imposed border; in a more modern perspective, their behaviors have been also framed in bottom-up processes of consolidation of spaces of sovereignty in a no less limiting vision. Faced with both approaches, the objective of this work is not to deny them but, first and foremost, to situate the experiences of border populations outside of logics that I understand as originally alien to themselves, and to highlight their own subjectivity. Finally, it also demonstrates that most of the practices developed by border people were fundamentally aimed at defending their local communities. It will be useful for both audiences interested in early modern Iberia or border studies from a bottom-up perspective.

En esta obra se ofrecen al lector diferentes perspectivas históricas y actuales sobre el conflicto, entendido como eje político-institucional de la construcción o deconstrucción del sistema normativo, para explicar su fenomenología. Desde finales de la II Guerra Mundial, los estudios sobre la teoría del conflicto, con orientaciones diversas, han generado multitud de publicaciones que sin embargo encuentran escasamente una proyección especializada en el análisis histórico-jurídico. Psicólogos, pedagogos, abogados, negociadores, educadores, etc. han desarrollado incesantemente la disciplina de la conflictología, hasta el punto de que el conflicto aparece con tantos matices que casi hemos olvidado que en realidad su gestión fue un objeto primigenio del Derecho. Los autores que participan en este libro sitúan el estudio del conflicto en un ámbito pragmático, como elemento básico de la articulación del poder, como instrumento de gestión y de resolución de controversias, y en definitiva como factor constante de las alteraciones de la vida comunitaria, pero concentrados ciertamente en su intelección como fenómeno jurídico, en orden a la asimilación de cauces efectivos de normativización. El estudio teórico, junto al documentado análisis de su proyección práctica en determinados periodos de la historia española contemporánea, proporciona una estrategia novedosa para la comprensión de la configuración de la política y el Derecho como construcciones institucionales dotadas de una capacidad consumada o frustrada para dirigir, con mejores o peores resultados, la realidad conflictiva de la sociedad española, en relevantes momentos de su devenir histórico y en la complejidad presente de su actualidad.

In the sixteenth century, European missionaries brought a foreign and global religion to China. Converts then transformed this new religion into a local one. Focusing on the still-active Catholic communities of Fuan county in northeast Fujian, this project addresses three main questions. Why did people convert? Second, how did converts and missionaries transform a global and foreign religion into a local religion? Third, what does Christianity's localization in Fuan tell us about the relationship between late imperial Chinese society and religion? The study's implications extend beyond the issue of Christianity in China to the wider fields of religious and social history and the early modern history of global intercultural relations. The book suggests that Christianity became part of a pre-existing pluralistic, local religious space. The author argues that we underestimate late imperial society's tolerance for "heterodoxy." The view from Fuan offers an original account of how a locality created its own religious culture in Ming-Qing China.
