Da vari anni Evandro Agazzi viene pubblicando alcuni volumi che presentano in forma sistematica e articolata le aree fondamentali della sua ampia riflessione filosofica. La scaturigine di questo vasto programma di ricerca è il grande rispetto per la conoscenza scientifica, accompagnato da un rifiuto del pregiudizio positivista che riduce alle percezioni sensoriali la capacità di apportare conoscenza e attribuisce alla ragione solo la capacità di elaborare schemi formali incapaci di apportare autentica conoscenza. Tutta l’opera di Agazzi invece scandaglia il vasto mondo di concetti e principi astratti necessari per comprendere e spiegare il mondo della vita e dargli un senso. Questa sfera dell’invisibile (ossia di ciò che non si capta con la percezione sensoriale) costituisce una realtà accessibile ad altre forme di esperienza (quali l’esperienza morale, estetica, erotica, religiosa). Il presente volume è dedicato all’antropologia filosofica, ossia a una riflessione attorno alla natura umana, tema attualissimo in un momento in cui l’infatuazione per le conquiste di scienza e tecnologia rischia di far considerare l’uomo come una macchina (sia pure pensante) o un semplice mammifero un poco più evoluto di un orango o di uno scimpanzé. Il superamento di queste limitazioni permette di riconoscere nell’uomo una componente non materiale e immortale, sfruttando anche le analogie con il perdurare dei prodotti culturali. Qui appare un’inattesa amplissima presentazione di esempi tratti dalla musica, che di per sé rappresentano una novità in seno alla discussione filosofica e si alimentano a una pratica e conoscenza diretta del mondo musicale attraverso cui è passato l’autore. Di qui il titolo di quest’opera, Dimostrare l’esistenza dell’uomo, il cui contenuto analizza il cammino faticoso lungo il quale si è giunti a riconoscere la pari dignità umana a tante categorie di esseri della nostra specie che ne erano esclusi.

Scholars from seven countries explore his contributions in areas ranging from philosophy of physics and general philosophy of science to bioethics, philosophy of mathematics and logic, epistemology of the social sciences and history of science, philosophy of language and artificial intelligence, education and anthropology, metaphysics and philosophy of religion. Agazzi developed a complete and coherent philosophical system, anticipating some of the turns in the philosophy of science after the crisis of logical empiricism and exerting an equal influence on continental hermeneutic philosophy.
