Esta obra recoge algunos de los trabajos presentados y debatidos en Barcelona el 19 y 20 de noviembre de 2008 en un Simposio organizado por el Taller de Estudios e Investigaciones Andino-Amazónicos (TEIAA) grupo de investigación consolidado de la Universidad de Barcelona (2005SGR 00250). El objetivo del encuentro fue propiciar el debate, desde una mirada interdisciplinaria y comparativa, en torno a categorías de análisis, metodologías y perspectivas teóricas relativas a las dinámicas de poder local desarrolladas en varias repúblicas centro y suramericanas en diversas coyunturas de la historia contemporánea. Se analizaron, entre otras cuestiones, problemas de organización social, política, gobernabilidad e imaginarios incidiendo en la base económica en la que se apoya el poder local; los instrumentos políticos utilizados para el acceso y el control del poder político por parte de grupos locales; las características de las alianzas socioeconómicas tejidas; las.vinculaciones con el poder regional y central; los conflictos ideológicos de los grupos en pugna; el papel de la escuela como elemento homogeneizador, entre los más significativos. Las miradas aquí recogidas han sido hechas desde la historia, la antropología y el derecho.

Esta obra recoge algunos de los trabajos presentados en Barcelona el 17 y 18 de noviembre de 2010 en el Simposio organizado por el Taller de Estudios e Investigaciones Andino- Amazónicos (TEIAA) relativos al Estado en América Latina. El objetivo del encuentro fue propiciar el debate, desde una mirada interdisciplinaria y comparativa, sobre el estado-nación latinoamericano atendiendo, fundamentalmente, a dos cuestiones. Una fue la relativa a los recursos existentes en el interior del Estado: quiénes tienen -o pretenden obtener- el control de los mismos, qué tipo de recursos, cuáles son las estrategias utilizadas… La otra cuestión fue la referida a los valores e imaginarios construidos en la historia republicana, el papel desempeñado por los grupos dirigentes y las políticas por ellos implementadas para conseguir la internacionalización de dichos valores por parte de la población; y también el cuestionamiento de aquéllos por parte de otros sectores socioeconómicos en el interior del Estado.

This collaborative multi-authored volume integrates interdisciplinary approaches to ethnic, imperial, and national borderlands in the Iberian World (16th to early 19th centuries). It illustrates the historical processes that produced borderlands in the Americas and connected them to global circuits of exchange and migration in the early modern world. The book offers a balanced state-of-the-art educational tool representing innovative research for teaching and scholarship. Its geographical scope encompasses imperial borderlands in what today is northern Mexico and southern United States; the greater Caribbean basin, including cross-imperial borderlands among the island archipelagos and Central America; the greater Paraguayan river basin, including the Gran Chaco, lowland Brazil, Paraguay, and Bolivia; the Amazonian borderlands; the grasslands and steppes of southern Argentina and Chile; and Iberian trade and religious networks connecting the Americas to Africa and Asia. The volume is structured around the following broad themes: environmental change and humanly crafted landscapes; the role of indigenous allies in the Spanish and Portuguese military expeditions; negotiations of power across imperial lines and indigenous chiefdoms; the parallel development of subsistence and commercial economies across terrestrial and maritime trade routes; labor and the corridors of forced and free migration that led to changing social and ethnic identities; histories of science and cartography; Christian missions, music, and visual arts; gender and sexuality, emphasizing distinct roles and experiences documented for men and women in the borderlands. While centered in the colonial era, it is framed by pre-contact Mesoamerican borderlands and nineteenth-century national developments for those regions where the continuity of inter-ethnic relations and economic networks between the colonial and national periods is particularly salient, like the central Andes, lowland Bolivia, central Brazil, and the Mapuche/Pehuenche captaincies in South America. All the contributors are highly recognized scholars, representing different disciplines and academic traditions in North America, Latin America and Europe.

A mediados del siglo XVIII empezó a reelaborarse una imagen de los territorios no europeos y de las sociedades que habitaban en ellos. Fue también entonces cuando se configuró claramente el proyecto de «modernidad» y de «progreso» basado en supuestos tales como el desarrollo de una ciencia «objetiva», una moral universal, y una ley regulada por lógicas propias en un contexto colonial del mundo que distinguía entre lo occidental o europeo y el resto de pueblos y culturas. Ese proyecto fue llevado a América por viajeros, científicos, misioneros y exploradores, entre otros, a lo largo de los siglos XIX y XX, y asumido, modificado o rechazado por las sociedades americanas.
