Indonesia adalah salah satu negara yang memiliki keanekaragaman hayati. Sumatera : 49 Suku Bangsa 2. Jawa : 7 Suku Bangsa 3. Kalimantan : 73 Suku Bangsa 4. Sulawesi : 117 Suku Bangsa 5. Nusa Tenggara : 30 Suku Bangsa 6. Maluku Ambon : 41Suku Bangsa 7. Irian Jaya : 49 Suku Bangsa Dari sudut suku bangsa yang ada, nyatalah bahwa masyarakat Indonesia merupakan suatu masyarakat majemuk, dengan masingmasing pendukung kebudayaan yang di dalam kebudayaan tersebut terkandung sistem nilai dan sistem pengetahuan yang sudah tumbuh ratusan bahkan ribuan tahun yang lalu yang dikelola secara turun-temurun dengan ribuan hukum adat, dipandu oleh ratusan sistem kepercayaan dan agama. Keanekaragaman kebudayaan dengan masing-masing pendukungnya oleh Cornelis van Vollenhoven4 untuk pertama kalinya menyebutnya sebagai Masyarakat Hukum Adat.
