Premio Nacional de Ensayo 2007 La diosa Fortuna ha sido concebida tradicionalmente como una personificación de aquellos elementos de la vida humana que no podemos manejar, sino que están en manos del azar. En realidad, el poder de la Fortuna ha sido grande, porque todas las dimensiones de la vida tienen un componente azaroso no domesticable de manera racional, desde la propia constitución genética de nuestro cuerpo hasta el éxito, la riqueza, el amor y la muerte, pasando por el tiempo, su duración y las circunstancias en que nos toca vivir. En cierta medida, podríamos concebir el proceso de racionalización occidental como un intento constante de dominar el azar y la suerte mediante la aplicación de procedimientos racionales en todas las esferas de la vida individual o colectiva. Pero siempre queda un resto de azar que no puede ser sometido a la razón, además del hecho analizado por Max Weber de las paradojas de la racionalidad occidental: cada nueva vuelta de tuerca del proceso de racionalización produce nuevas formas de irracionalidad. Destaca el carácter multidisciplinar del libro: junto a análisis de las metáforas nos encontramos también con enfoques propios de las nuevas formas de historia cultural, la sociología, la filosofía, la literatura y la iconografía, ya que en todos estos campos ha aparecido tradicionalmente la diosa Fortuna como personificación de la suerte y del azar en los asuntos humanos. La primera parte, aunque hace incursiones a épocas anteriores, se centra en tres tradiciones intelectuales y artísticas durante los siglos xvi y xvii —iconografía, literatura y filosofía política— en las que la diosa Fortuna ejerce su triunfo y enorme influencia como metáfora y alegoría. Durante los siglos de la Ilustración o del Progreso, la diosa sobrevive en un segundo plano y resurge con fuerza a partir de las guerras mundiales del siglo xx, pues se agudiza nuestra percepción de que la vida depende de muchos factores que no podemos controlar. Por ello, la segunda parte del libro se centra en aquellos elementos contemporáneos en que reaparece la Fortuna, si bien, claro está, transmutada y secularizada en otras categorías como las de azar, riesgo, suerte o destino: la fragilidad de la vida buena de los individuos ante el amor o la tragedia, las relaciones entre Justicia y Fortuna, el regreso de ésta en la llamada "sociedad del riesgo" o el poder de la Fortuna en los campos de concentración constituyen elementos importantes para formas actuales de reflexión filosófica.

The late 16th century and the first half of the 17th century saw a final resurgence of the concept of Fortuna. Shortly thereafter, this goddess of chance and luck, who had survived for millennia, rapidly lost her cultural and intellectual relevance. This volume explores the late heyday and subsequent erasure of Fortuna. It examines vernacular traditions and confessional differences, analyses how the iconography and semantics of Fortuna motifs transformed, and traces the rise of complementary concepts such as those of probability, risk, fate and contingency. These new translations of Bernat Metge’s Libre de Fortuna e Prudència (1381) into Spanish (verse) and English (prose) make this key early work by 14th-century Catalonia’s most challenging writer available to the wider audience it has longed deserved. As with Metge’s masterwork, Lo somni (The Dream), recently translated by Cortijo Ocaña and Elisabeth Lagresa (Benjamins, 2013), the writing of The Book of Fortune and Prudence seems to have been precipitated by a larger crisis in Catalan society, in this case, an all-too-familiar-sounding banking crisis. Drawing on sources ranging from Boethius, to the Roman de la Rose to Arthurian fable, Metge unveils the workings of the world through his two allegorical women, Fortune (good and bad) and Prudence, in a search for consolation in the midst of inexplicable reversals of fortune--those of others, and perhaps his own. But as in the Somni, Metge refuses here to offer pat solutions to the crises of his day, offering what is perhaps one of our earliest glimpses of the impact of new ideas coming from Italy in the Iberian Peninsula. The work is written in the popular noves rimades form (octosyllabic rhymed couplets) in the challenging mix of Occitan and Catalan common to verse writing in 14th century Catalonia. Cortijo’s and Martines’s tri-lingual edition, together with its fine introduction and notes, is an extremely valuable contribution as it makes this unduly neglected text of the later Iberian Middle Ages available for students and other readers in a broadly accessible, yet scholarly, form.
