This study measures the willingness of male and female farmers to pay for climate-smart technology in rice. Rice is the most important crop in India in terms ofarea, production, and consumption. It is also the biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions among all crops. Direct-seeded rice (DSR)with drum seeder, a climate-smart technology, requires less labor and water and is more climate friendly than transplanted rice; yet,its adoption is slow in India. Theauthors of this studycarried out a discrete choice experiment with 666 farmers from the Palghar and Thane districts of Maharashtra to measure their willingness to pay for drum seeders—a key piece of equipment for adopting DSR. Both male and female farmers were surveyed to capture the heterogeneity in their valuation of the key attributes of drumseeders. Although both male and female farmers prefer cheaper drum seeders, the marginal valuation of different attributes of the drum seeder varies by the farmers’ gender. The authors also used the Women Empowerment in Agriculture Index (WEAI), developed by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), to collect self-reported data on the role and say of women in agriculture. The respective gender roles in the family and on the farm seem to explain some of this difference. Men have a greater say over how the family spends the cash. Accordingly, men tend to have a higher willingness to pay for attributes that increase income (increase in yield) or reduce cash costs (reduction in the seedrate). Women contribute a large share of the labor for transplanting rice, much of whichis unpaid work on family farms. Not surprisingly, therefore, women seem to value labor saving significantly more than their male counterparts. Further, theWEAI data show that although men in the family have more say, women do have an influence on decisions regarding crop production and the adoption of new technologies,to an extent. Therefore, to enhance the adoption of drum seeders, the product designers and extension workers should also target women

Rice-wheat, a major cropping system of Pakistan, is vulnerable to the negative impacts of climate change, manifesting in the form of yield reduction. Among various crops, rice is often identified as the most at-risk food crop which is prone to a substantial drop in yield because of climate change and weather variations. It is estimated that the yield of wheat and rice may decline by 14.7 percent and 20.5 percent, respectively, by 2050 due to changes in climate. It is expected that Pakistan could potentially incur a climate change-related loss of $19.5 billion by 2050 due to reduced wheat and rice crop yields due to water scarcity, rising average temperatures, and less precipitation. Research indicates that if current climate change patterns persist and farmers do not adopt suitable climate resilient methods, rice production in Pakistan could decline by as much as 36 percent by the year 2099.

In Cambodia, the increasing scarcity of rural labour is pushing farmers to find ways to manage large rice fields with meagre resources and continuously emerging crop management constraints, especially for weed control. Out-migration of rural labour has resulted in a shift from manual transplanting to direct-seeded rice (DSR) and this has changed the spectrum of weed species and made weed management more difficult in rice. This publication describes important weeds of rice in Cambodia, weed seed contamination in rice seed for sowing, weedy rice contamination in paddy and options for Integrated Weed Management (IWM). The elements of IWM include: cultural practices; stale seedbed; crop establishment methods; crop rotation; water management and chemical weed control. Modernisation of weed management in Cambodia, is constrained by a lack of uptake of existing published research and failure to incorporate results of new research into extension media. Multiple conflicting messages emanating from Donors and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) also confuse farmers and delay adoption of good agricultural practices (GAP). Furthermore, in the absence of a functioning public extension service, Cambodian farmers are locked into pesticide-reliant practices and limited use of alternatives. Pesticide manufacturers, distributors and local sellers reinforce pesticide-based recommendations as the dominant technology. In Cambodia, weed research priorities include development of: management practices to reduce weed seed banks in direct-seeded rice fields; integrated weed management strategies to delay or avoid development of herbicide resistance in major weed species in direct-seeded rice; options for the integrated management of weedy rice (Oryza sativa f. spontanea) in direct-seeded rice; and comparison of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) with ground application for efficacy and safety of herbicide application in rice.

Thousands of years ago, people from east to south Asia settled throughout river deltas and domesticated wild rice and now it is the staple food for seventeen countries in Asia and the pacific, countries in Africa, seven countries in Latin, America and Caribbean and one is the near east.Rice is the life-line of Asia. More than 90% of the world's rice crop is produced here. Paddling is done in rice for easier transplanting and to reduce water infiltration. It destroys the soil physical structure, which has implications for the following wheat crop. Direct seeding is pretty alternative to transplanting but there are certain constraints facing to adopt this methodology. Weeds and rice emerge the same time and this causes a shift in weed flora towards predominantly grass-weeds. Germination is a problem for direct seeding in Rice. Seed priming can increase the speed and uniformity of germination when the seeds are subsequently planted. Osmopriming is a special type of seed priming that has been used to describe the soaking of seeds in aerated low water potential solutions. It has been successfully introduced in cereals including rice.
