In 1972, an intrepid group of teachers and students at New Trier High School (Winnetka, IL) formed the Center for Self-Directed Learning. Each student would design their own program instead of following the daily grind of standardized courses with off-the-shelf textbooks, canned lectures, and, of course, the all-important final exam. Approximately 600 students took the plunge into the unknown during the Center's 10 years. Now, more than 35 Center graduates look back on their experience, each of them writing about why they left the standard curriculum and joined the Center, what they did in the Center, and how the Center has affected their adult lives. Among the graduates who contributed memoirs are Sen. Mark Kirk (R-IL) and Oscar-nominated actress Virginia Madsen. "The stories renew our faith in the human drive for self-fulfillment." Arthur L. Costa Past president of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD)

Summarizes and synthesizes four case studies of schools organized to develop self-direction in students. A theoretical perspective on the origins of self-direction is presented and integrated with the findings. The schools, located in the Federal Republic of Germany, Hungary, the Philippines and the USA were studied by local research teams operating under criteria developed for the research. The book seeks to develop a more accurate perspective on the psychological and behavioral characteristics of self-directed learners and to analyze how schools in four different national contexts are organized for the purpose of promoting self-direction in learners.

"The research question addressed is: how can teachers promote self-directed learning (SDL) in a high school foreign language classroom? The impetus for this Capstone was a desire to see high school language students take more control over their education. Two projects were conducted: one with a French Two class, and one with a French Three class. These projects incorporated essential elements of SDL to assess what works and does not work with SDL at the high school level. Much research has been done with SDL and adult education. This Capstone highlights how high school foreign language teachers can implement aspects of SDL into their instruction and do so with success to the benefit of their students."--

The Self-Directed Learning Handbook offers teachers and principals an innovative program for customizing schooling to the learning needs of individual students-- and for motivating them to take increasing responsibility for deciding what and how they should learn. Whether the students are struggling or proficient, the program is designed to nurture their natural passion for learning and mastery, challenging them to go beyond the easy and familiar so they can truly excel. The program can be introduced in stages in any middle or high school classroom and enables students of diverse abilities to design and pursue independent course work, special projects, or even artistic presentations, community field work or apprenticeships. Using this approach, the students take on an increasingly autonomous, self-directed role as they progress. The heart of the program is the action contract (or learning agreement) whereby the student sets challenging yet attainable goals, commits to a path for achieving them, and evaluates the results. Special emphasis is placed on developing skills and competencies that can serve the student well in his or her academic and career endeavors.
