A directional wave analysis computer program has been developed to analyze the measured directional wave data from an ENDECO Wave-Track buoy. Due to the nature of the buoy, the direction components must be adjusted in order to apply a conventional wave slope analysis. The choice of a Wave-Track buoy stems from the requirement of a light-weight, easy to handle directional sensing wave buoy. The results can be used to validate the directional spread of wave energy produced by the Spectral Ocean Wave Model (SOWM). Also, the resulting directional spread of energy, as produced by the buoy, may now be used with ship motions to produce ship response amplitude operator (RAO's), or combined with ship RAO's to estimate ship motions. The equations are developed to account for buoy motions in a current and in shallow water. Although electronic phase shifts have been adjusted, it is still necessary to develop some analytical solution to compensate for hydrodynamic responses and phase shifts. The analyzed results include frequencies, energy densities, Fourier coefficients, first and second harmonic mean wave directions and root mean square (rms) spreading. Also included is the directional spreading of energy calculated by four different methods. Results have agreed well with other wave measuring buoys as detailed in other sources. Sea tests were conducted in May 1982 aboard the Dutch oceanographic research ship Hr. Ms. TYDEMAN to compare the performance of three wave buoys. These were a disposable buoy designed and built by the Delft Univ. of Technology, a WAVEC buoy under development by the Datawell Corp., and an ENDECO Corp. Wave-Track buoy owned by the David Taylor NSRDC. The disposable buoy provided energy spectra, while the other two buoys provided energy spectra and wave directionalities. Time histories of the significant wave heights and modal wave periods of the WAVEC and the Wave-Track buoys generally agree throughout the experiment. Energy spectra, mean wave directions, and spreading angles are also presented for most of the runs measured by the WAVEC and the Wave-Track buoys. The spectra of the two buoys are similar, with the WAVEC buoy showing higher peaks in a majority of cases. The mean directions basically compare well for wave frequencies above 0.11 hertz. Wave-Track mean directions below this range are often too sporadic for comparison with the WAVEC directions. The spreading of the Wave-Track directional energy is greater than the spreading of the WAVEC directional energy. Keywords: Directional ocean waves.

A program of experiments was carried out at the Naval Research Laboratories Chesapeake Bay Bridge Laboratory to assess the directional resolving capabilities of a particular array of five wave elevation detectors. It is desired to be able to distinguish waves both by their wave lengths and elevations and by their directions of propagation as part of an NADC sponsored study on surface wave modifications. The collected data were analyzed and rather good success was had in deriving directional wave spectra. Recommendations are made to further improve the experimental procedure. (Author).
