The Indian Ocean: Basics of Marine Geology, Physics and Chemistry begins with a short introduction to the and origin of water and formation of oceans on Earth. This is followed by the history of Oceanography / Marine Sciences, including international and Indian scenarios. In subsequent chapters marine instruments, sampling equipment, coastal features, offshore and deep-sea feature, and structures are discussed. Oceanic volcanism, formation of different rocks and geotectonics (continental drift, plate tectonics, seafloor spreading) are detailed, as these play important roles in the evolution of Earth. Sediments of the coasts and deep sea are presented in terms of their classifications, granulometry, chemical compositions and other parameters. The properties of sea water, oceanic circulation and cycling of nutrients form the crux of physical oceanography.
