La FAO inició, hace algunos años, un proceso colaborativo para elaborar directrices voluntarias dirigidas a optimizar las contribuciones de los bosques y los árboles al desarrollo urbano sostenible. Científicos, profesionales y funcionarios públicos de todas las ciudades del mundo se reunieron para debatir sobre los elementos y desafíos clave de la silvicultura urbana; y se creó un pequeño grupo de expertos para recopilar este enorme conocimiento. Este documento es el resultado final de ese proceso. Dirigido a una audiencia mundial – que comprende las instancias decisorias urbanas, funcionarios públicos, asesores políticos y demás partes interesadas – contribuirá al desarrollo de bosques urbanos y periurbanos que ayuden a las ciudades a resolver sus exigencias actuales y futuras de productos forestales y servicios del ecosistema. Estas directrices contribuirán también a aumentar la sensibilización sobre las contribuciones que los bosques y los árboles pueden aportar para mejorar la calidad de vida, y sobre su papel fundamental en la sostenibilidad mundial.

This book describes cases and experiences in connection with environmental and cultural ecosystem services in Argentina. Lacapacidad de los SIG para el almacenamiento, recuperación, y manipulación de datos espaciales, hacende estos sistemas una herramienta ideal para el inventario y manejo de los árboles urbanos, lograndocon ello obtener datos visuales y poder relacionar los más variados datos espaciales, de diferentesgéneros, obteniendo respuestas integradas para los problemas que plantea las zonas verdes urbanas, deuna manera rápida y económica (Wood 1999). Es por ello que en el presente estudio se implementará eluso de los SIG, con el fin de que se conozca su potencial y sea aplicado no solo en el Municipio deEnvigado sino en las diferentes regiones del país para el manejo del Bosque Urbano.

This open access book presents current knowledge about ecosystem services (ES) in urban planning, and discusses various urban ES topics such as spatial distribution of urban ecosystems, population distribution, and physical infrastructure properties. The book addresses all these issues by: i) investigating to what extent ecosystem services are currently included in urban plans, and discussing what is still needed to improve planning practice; ii) illustrating how to develop ecosystem services indicators and information that can be used by urban planners to enhance plan design; iii) demonstrating the application of ES assessments to support urban planning processes through case studies; and iv) reflecting on criteria for addressing equity in urban planning through ecosystem service assessments, by exploring issues associated with the supply of, the access to and demand for ES by citizens. Through fully worked out case studies, from policy questions, to baseline analysis and indicators, and from option comparison to proposed solutions, the book offers readers detailed and accessible coverage of outstanding issues and proposed solutions to better integrate ES in city planning.
