Autism, intellectual disability, special needs, down syndrome, challenging behavior- a series of words and phrases that have condemned millions of individuals and their families to an experience of life that, for the main part, has been cruel and unforgiving. For centuries, seemingly no greater curse or affliction could have been visited on humankind. But have we got it wrong? Is it possible that we have really missed something? I want to share with you a part of my journey in life that I was blessed to walk in the company of a person who lived on the extreme edges of our society as a result of his intellectual difference. It was the summer of 1991 when our paths first crossed. I was 23 years old and he had yet to reach his 19th year. The quarter of a century that was to follow could only be described as miraculous. The experiences shared and the lessons learned in the company of this marginalized man directed the course of my life in ways that were, quite simply, unimaginable. The mountains scaled, the challenges confronted, the demons defeated and the successes savoured were never external to me because the journey undertaken was a journey to the interior. An open mind, an untethered spirit and a compassionate heart were the staging posts on an expedition whose ultimate destination was a resting place of greater inner freedom. With the passing of years, I grew to appreciate evermore the gift of another Presence which shone most brightly through my friend, shedding light upon my path and giving meaning to my own life. Over time I came to deeply respect and love someone who enabled me to discard the many veils that had clouded my vision for so long and in whose company I was repeatedly invited to look anew with courage and clarity at the many pillars in my life that needed to be dismantled so that a clearer, more expansive and joyful reality could be imagined, embraced and created. The journey that we walked together opened my eyes and I came to see that the people we pay little attention to, those who occupy society's peripheral position, have much to impart to us and that it is often within the wastelands of our societies that our greatest teachers reside.....

Why do able-bodied characters fake disability in 40 early modern English plays? This book uncovers a previously unexamined theatrical tradition and explores the way counterfeit disability captivated the Renaissance stage. Through detailed case studies of both lesser-known and canonical plays (by Shakespeare, Jonson, Marston, and others), Lindsey Row-Heyveld demonstrates why counterfeit disability proved so useful to early modern playwrights. Changing approaches to almsgiving in the English Reformation led to increasing concerns about feigned disability. The theater capitalized on those concerns, using the counterfeit-disability tradition to explore issues of charity, epistemology, and spectatorship. By illuminating this neglected tradition, this book fills an important gap in both disability history and literary studies, and explores how fears of counterfeit disability created a feedback loop of performance and suspicion. The result is the still-pervasive insistence that even genuinely disabled people must perform in order to, paradoxically, prove the authenticity of their impairments.

"As workers in the field of rehabilitation we are realizing more and more that we do not "rehabilitate" people. Rather we must be able to reach the heart and mind of the individual with whom we are dealing, so he will want to avail himself of the services our program can provide for him. His drive to accomplish his own rehabilitation must come from within himself and we must be sensitive too in the factors that can help or hinder establishing this indispensable primary base for rehabilitation. Increasingly we are learning that human motivation is influenced by many things. Especially important are the psychological and social factors of an individual's life. These factors are important to consider early in our planning for the whole program of rehabilitation for the individual and in the evaluation of each step of its development. This bulletin was written primarily for vocational rehabilitation counselors. It is expected that it will assist them in planning better rehabilitation programs. The need for awareness of the psychological adjustment mechanisms of the physically disabled is not confined to the counselor, however, and it is hoped that physicians, social workers, psychologists, and placement specialists may profit from the contents of this publication. The cooperation and coordination of the various specialties is the most important element today in providing rehabilitation services for the disabled whereby they may take their rightful place as contributing members of society. ASALH 2023 Book Prize Finalist Reveals how disability and disablement have shaped Black social life in America Through both law and custom, the color line has cast Black people as innately disabled and thus unfit for freedom, incapable of self-governance, and contagious within the national body politic. Disabilities of the Color Line maintains that the Black literary tradition historically has inverted this casting by exposing the disablement of racism without disclaiming disability. In place of a triumphalist narrative of overcoming where both disability and disablement alike are shunned, Dennis Tyler argues that Black authors and activists have consistently avowed what he calls the disabilities of the color line: the historical and ongoing anti-Black systems of division that maim, immobilize, and stigmatize Black people. In doing so, Tyler reveals how Black writers and activists such as David Walker, Henry Box Brown, William and Ellen Craft, Charles Chesnutt, James Weldon Johnson, and Mamie Till-Mobley have engaged in a politics and aesthetics of redress: modes of resistance that, in the pursuit of racial and disability justice, acknowledged the disabling violence perpetrated by anti-Black regimes in order to conceive or engender dynamic new worlds that account for people of all abilities. While some writers have affirmed disability to capture how their bodies, minds, and health have been made vulnerable to harm and impairment by the state and its citizens, others’ assertion of disability symbolizes a sense of community as well as a willingness to imagine and create a world distinct from the dominant social order.

Passing—an act usually associated with disguising race—also relates to disability. Whether a person classified as mentally ill struggles to suppress aberrant behavior to appear "normal" or a person falsely claims a disability to gain some advantage, passing is a pervasive and much discussed phenomenon. Nevertheless, Disability and Passing is the first anthology to examine this issue. The editors and contributors to this volume explore the intersections of disability, race, gender, and sexuality as these various aspects of identity influence each other and make identity fluid.
