"Human action is guided by social structure, but there are also many situations in which behavior is improvised, emergent, and outside conventional normative constraints. This book focuses on these types of occasions, which include panics, crowds, social movements, and organized behavior following disasters. Social scientists in the fields of collective behavior, social movements, and disaster research study these topics. E. L. Quarantelli, cofounder and longtime director of the Disaster Research Center (DRC), is one of those scholars; indeed, he has devoted his career to understanding them. Quarantelli's impact on the fields of disaster research and collective behavior is traced in the foreword to this volume."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Outbreaks written by Jerry D. Rose and has been published by Simon and Schuster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1982 with Social Science categories.

From the Salem witch hunts and the storming of the Bastille, to the Holocaust, the Montgomery bus boycott, and the People's Temple mass suicide, extraordinary episodes of collective behavior fill our history books. In "Outbreaks", Jerry D. Rose examines the social conditions that generate panic, nonviolent and violent protest, religious revivals, progroms, and the like-- and analyzes their connection to ordinary human behavior. Rose begins with an overview of traditional theories and approaches that have been applied to collective behavior and the introduces his own framework. Four chapters are devoted to the different categories of collective behavior: Disasters- when social systems are unable to sustain the resources required for their own continuation Protest- when unusual or extralegal tactics are used to achieve a political goal Persecution- when persons or behaviors viewed as threats to the social order are sought out and suppressed Renewal- when people work to change what they see as a growth in moral indifference and corruption Each chapter examines the background causes of the episodes; participation (who starts or joins); process (how the episode develops and how the spectators, participants, and authorities interact); and the consequences (the success or failure of the action and its "side effects" and by-products). The final chapter revisits the realm of the general theory of collective behavior, seeking new, coherent, empirically valid insights into the role of the episodic dimension in human behavior Rose brings the subject alive with numerous examples of collective behavior, from the panic created by Orson Welles's 1938 "Martian invasion" broadcast to the eruption of Mount St. Helens, the Italian earthquake, the Miami riots, the Attica prison uprising, the purges in revolutionary Iran, and the growth of religious cults.

Organizing is represented by a structural code having four elements: domains (D), tasks (T), human and material resources (R), and activities (A). The code is used to empirically record differences between formal organizing and collective behavior as the most immediate structural setting within which role enactment occurs.

Mass Panic And Social Attachment written by Anthony R. Mawson and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-11-30 with Social Science categories.

How do humans behave when under threat of attack or disaster? How does the social context affect individual behavior? Anthony Mawson provides an illuminating examination of individual and collective behavior under conditions of stress and danger, in response to both natural and manmade threats and disasters. Opening with a question about the interpretation of "mass panic" in combat , the book gradually unfolds into a multidisciplinary analysis of the psychobiological basis of social relationships and the neural organization of motivation and emotion. Mawson provides a comprehensive review and synthesis of the mass panic and disaster literature and offers a social attachment model, that recognizes the fundamentally gregarious nature of human beings and the primacy of attachments. He argues that the typical response to threat and danger is neither fight nor flight, nor social breakdown, but increased affiliation and camaraderie. This book is unique in addressing the behavioral and social aspects of threat and disaster. It will appeal to social scientists across a range of disciplines, to public administrators, and to disaster and public health professionals.

Organized Behavior In Disaster Analysis And Conceptualization written by Russell Rowe Dynes and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1969 with Disaster relief categories.

The study focuses on organized activities within communities experiencing disaster. It is initiated by a description of the nature of disaster involvement on the part of various community organizations. A discussion follows of the different meanings of the term 'disaster' and of the social implications created by differential characteristics of disaster agents. It is suggested that the primary disruption of the social structure is revealed in unplanned changes in interorganizational relationships. Four types of organized behavior are isolated, derived from a cross-classification of the nature of the disaster tasks and the post-impact structure. Using these four types, problems of mobilization and recruitment are discussed as well as the specific operational problems these groups experience functioning under disaster conditions. A final chapter deals with the implications of disaster research in dealing with the organizational consequences of a nuclear catastrophe.
