This book explores how narratives are deeply embodied, engaging heart, soul, as well as mind, through varying adult learner perspectives. Biographical research is not an isolated, individual, solipsistic endeavor but shaped by larger ecological interactions – in families, schools, universities, communities, societies, and networks – that can create or destroy hope. Telling or listening to life stories celebrates complexity, messiness, and the rich potential of learning lives. The narratives in this book highlight the rapid disruption of sustainable ecologies, not only ‘natural’, physical, and biological, but also psychological, economic, relational, political, educational, cultural, and ethical. Yet, despite living in a precarious, and often frightening, liquid world, biographical research can both chronicle and illuminate how resources of hope are created in deeper, aesthetically satisfying ways. Biographical research offers insights, and even signposts, to understand and transcend the darker side of the human condition, alongside its inspirations. Discourses, Dialogue and Diversity in Biographical Research aims to generate insight into people’s fears and anxieties but also their capacity to 'keep on keeping on' and to challenge forces that would diminish their and all our humanity. It provides a sustainable approach to creating sufficient hope in individuals and communities by showing how building meaningful dialogue, grounded in social justice, can create good enough experiences of togetherness across difference. The book illuminates what amounts to an ecology of life, learning and human flourishing in a sometimes tortured, fractious, fragmented, and fragile world, yet one still offering rich resources of hope.

This edited collection aims to look beyond established narratives of feminist history, by focusing on non-English speaking European countries. Recent scholarship on the history of the women’s liberation movement in individual countries has enhanced our understanding of the importance of transnational influences in the history of European feminism, and problematised the periodisation of feminisms. Additionally, the translation of feminist practices and texts have received interest during the past years. Despite this work, the United States, and to a lesser extent the United Kingdom, are still the main points of reference in histories of post-war feminism. This book asks what happens to the picture if we place non-English speaking European countries in the centre. Using Lucy Delap’s concept of ‘mosaic feminism’, its contributors emphasise the variety of patterns that women’s feminist organising showed in different cultural contexts despite similarities in their ideological corner stones.

Whirling dervishes. Ecstatic experience. Historical and contemporary expressions of Sufism are suffused with spirituality, asceticism, and mysticism. Sufism in Canada asks how we can understand this fascinating religious practice in a specifically Canadian context and, by extension, how Sufism informs Islam and popular spirituality not only in Canada but across the globe. Using case studies rooted in Canadian concerns and communities, scholars of Islamic studies, sociology, ethnomusicology, and history analyze the meaning and practice of Sufism in this country. Professionalization has become a given in the worlds of work and education. Victims’ garments, broken glasses, wallets, shoes, and other such personal property that are recovered from places of death including concentration camps, mass graves, and prisons have become staples of memorial museums, exhibited to the public as material testimony in order to evoke sympathy and promote human rights. How do these objects take on such power, and what are the benefits and pitfalls of deploying them for political purposes? A Victim’s Shoe, a Broken Watch, and Marbles examines how artifacts of atrocities circulate and, in so doing, sheds new light on the institutions and social processes that shape collective memory of human rights abuses. Lea David traces the journeys of what she terms “desire objects”: their rediscovery at the locations of mass atrocities, their use in forensic and legal procedures, their return to the homes of grieving families, their appearance in public spaces such as museums and exhibitions, and their role in political protests. She critically investigates the logic that shapes why and how desire objects gain symbolic power and political significance, showing when and under what circumstances they are used to promote particular worldviews and narratives. Featuring both novel theoretical methods and keen empirical analysis, this book offers important insights into the shortcomings of common assumptions about human rights.
