This innovative collection examines how European queens participated in the conceptualisation, mobilisation, and transformation of ‘natural resources’ from the fifteenth to the end of the eighteenth century. Early modern queens interacted with human and nonhuman worlds through natural resource management activities that have rarely been the focus of sustained historical analysis. This volume engages with the wide range of nonhuman materials, living and inanimate, that premodern queens had the power to direct and dispose of, to utilise, enjoy, and commercialise, to visualise and commemorate, and even to destroy, on and in their lands, forests, waterways, and oceans. Both queenship and natural resource management were configured by contemporary gender ideologies, which structured a dynamic relationship between queenship and the more-than-human world. The case studies in this collection explore how queens’ natural resource management was impacted by their cultural and personal contexts, particularly their changing status as queens regnant, consort, dowager, or regent. The contributors draw on diverse materials and employ a variety of historical approaches—including political, economic, cultural, literary, legal, and animal studies—to demonstrate how queens interacted with the nonhuman world and how their engagements were embedded in premodern gender rules. This collection will be of great value for undergraduate and postgraduate students, and scholars, in gender and women’s history, environmental history, queenship studies, and early modern studies.

To Shape Our World For Good written by C. William Walldorf, Jr. and has been published by Cornell University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-06-15 with Political Science categories.
Why does the United States pursue robust military invasions to change some foreign regimes but not others? Conventional accounts focus on geopolitics or elite ideology. C. William Walldorf, Jr., argues that the politics surrounding two broad, public narratives—the liberal narrative and the restraint narrative—often play a vital role in shaping US decisions whether to pursue robust and forceful regime change. Using current sociological work on cultural trauma, Walldorf explains how master narratives strengthen (and weaken), and he develops clear predictions for how and when these narratives will shape policy. To Shape Our World For Good demonstrates the importance and explanatory power of the master-narrative argument, using a sophisticated combination of methods: quantitative analysis and eight cases in the postwar period that include Korea, Vietnam, and El Salvador during the Cold War and more recent cases in Iraq and Libya. The case studies provide the environment for a critical assessment of the connections among the politics of master narratives, pluralism, and the common good in contemporary US foreign policy and grand strategy. Walldorf adds new insight to our understanding of US expansionism and cautions against the dangers of misusing popular narratives for short-term political gains—a practice all too common both past and present.

Evidence Contestation written by Karin Zachmann and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-02-21 with Science categories.
This book examines the practices of contesting evidence in democratically constituted knowledge societies. It provides a multifaceted view of the processes and conditions of evidence criticism and how they determine the dynamics of de- and re-stabilization of evidence. Evidence is an essential resource for establishing claims of validity, resolving conflicts, and legitimizing decisions. In recent times, however, evidence is being contested with increasing frequency. Such contestations vary in form and severity – from questioning the interpretation of data or the methodological soundness of studies to accusations of evidence fabrication. The contributors to this volume explore which actors, for what reasons and to what effect, question evidence in fields such as the biological, environmental and health sciences. In addition to actors inside academia, they examine the roles of various other players, including citizen scientists, counter-experts, journalists, patients, consumers and activists. The contributors tackle questions of how disagreements are framed and how they are used to promote vested interests. By drawing on methodological and theoretical approaches from a wide range of fields, this book provides a much-needed perspective on how evidence criticism influences the development and state of knowledge societies and their political condition. Evidence Contestation will appeal to scholars and advanced students working in philosophy of science, epistemology, bioethics, science and technology studies, the history of science and technology and science communication.
