Excerpt from A History of Northumberland, Vol. 3: Hexhamshire, Part I Northumberland, it is well to remember, is the fifth of English counties in area; the division of it which was early marked by the two dioceses of Lindisfarne and Hexham, and continued through the Middle Ages with the Coquet as a civil boundary, enters into practical modern life in the divergent interests of those who travel to their homes from Newcastle by the north or the west lines of railway. From the very first, the committee were of Opinion that the work of writing the history Of the county ought not to be restricted for a series of years to North Northum berland, but that their subscribers in the Tyne valleys should be equally benefited. Possibly, however, this idea would not have taken practical shape, [had not the Rev. J. Raine most generously placed at the disposal of the committee the great stores of material relating to the town and shire of Hexham which he had for many years been collecting at York. The fact that Hexhamshire so long formed a distinct regality has caused its history to be all but a sealed book to many, even among those best acquainted with the annals of the rest of the county. Thus, although there was but little to add to the history of the priory of Hexham to supplement the information already published in Mr. Raine's standard work on the annals of that house, and in Mr. C. C. Hodges architectural monograph, it was felt that immediate advantage should be taken of Mr. Raine's generosity. Excerpt: ... which are necessarily posterior to Prath's obligation to give possession, dated 1256, were assigned by Hodgson to the shrievalty of Hugh de Bolbec, 1236-1245, on account of his name appearing at the head of the attestations; but had he been sheriff, the words 'tunc vicecomite' would have almost certainly followed his name. Alexander III. of Scotland at Stirling in 1257.1 Already in April, 1259, William de Swinburne was acting as treasurer to Alexander's young queen, Margaret. During the four ensuing years he disbursed the sum of 598 10s. 4d. for his royal mistress in the purchase of cloth, furs, napkins, towels, linen, cloth of gold and aresta, cambrics, wax, spices, oblations, jewels, and other petty expenses.2 It was probably these duties at the Scottish court that involved him in a serious dispute with Gilbert de Colecester, a London tailor, living in the parish of St. Benet de Gerschereche (Gracechurch). The tailor in the end made a most abject submission.3 Swinburne, who had been appointed rector of Fordun in Kincardineshire, farmed the altar dues of his church for three years from 1260, to a chaplain named David, at forty marks annually. David was to serve the church with two chaplains, and the necessary clerks, bearing all charges connected with it, except papal imposts, and was to find Swinburne fuel, litter, hay, and a stone of cheese for 8d.4 It cannot have been long after this that Swinburne resigned his ecclesiastical preferment, and took to himself a wife.5 In 1269, the same year that he acquired Chollerton, Queen Margaret sent him as her bailiff into Cumberland.0 In consequence perhaps of a letter the queen wrote to Walter de Merton, her father's chancellor, in his behalf,7 Swinburne obtained a confirmation of his grant of...
