Scientific Elite is about Nobel prize winners and the well-defined stratification system in twentieth-century science. It tracks the careers of all American laureates who won prizes from 1907 until 1972, examining the complex interplay of merit and privilege at each stage of their scientific lives and the creation of the ultra-elite in science. The study draws on biographical and bibliographical data on laureates who did their prize-winning research in the United States, and on detailed interviews with forty-one of the fifty-six laureates living in the United States at the time the study was done. Zuckerman finds laureates being successively advantaged as time passes. These advantages are producing growing disparities between the elite and other scientists both in performance and in rewards, which create and maintain a sharply graded stratification system.

"If you're a parent who has decided to educate your children yourself, this book is the first you should buy."—?Washington Times The Well-Trained Mind will instruct you, step by step, on how to give your child an academically rigorous, comprehensive education from preschool through high school—one that will train him or her to read, to think, to ?understand?, to be well-rounded and curious about learning. Veteran home educators Jessie Wise and Susan Wise Bauer outline the classical pattern of education called the trivium, which organizes learning around the maturing capacity of the child's mind and comprises three stages: the elementary school "grammar stage," the middle school "logic stage," and the high school "rhetoric stage." Using this theory as your model, you'll be able to instruct your child in all levels of reading, writing, history, geography, mathematics, science, foreign languages, rhetoric, logic, art, and music, regardless of your own aptitude in those subjects. This newly revised edition contains completely updated ordering information for all curricula and books, new and expanded curricula recommendations, new material on using computers and distance-learning resources, answers to common questions about home education, information about educational support groups, and advice on practical matters such as working with your local school board, preparing a high school transcript, and applying to colleges.

Data Warehousing And Knowledge Discovery written by Mukesh K. Mohania and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-09-02 with Computers categories.

Data warehousing and knowledge discovery has been widely accepted as a key te- nology for enterprises and organizations to improve their abilities in data analysis, decision support, and the automatic extraction of knowledge from data. With the exponentially growing amount of information to be included in the decision-making process, the data to be considered become more and more complex in both structure and semantics. New developments such as cloud computing add to the challenges with massive scaling, a new computing infrastructure, and new types of data. Consequently, the process of retrieval and knowledge discovery from this huge amount of heterogeneous complex data forms the litmus test for research in the area. In the last decade, the International Conference on Data Warehousing and Kno- edge Discovery (DaWaK) has become one of the most important international sci- tific events bringing together researchers, developers, and practitioners to discuss the latest research issues and experiences in developing and deploying data warehousing and knowledge discovery systems, applications, and solutions. th This year’s conference, the 12 International Conference on Data Warehousing and Knowledge Discovery (DaWaK 2010), continued the tradition by discussing and disseminating innovative principles, methods, algorithms, and solutions to challe- ing problems faced in the development of data warehousing, knowledge discovery, the emerging area of "cloud intelligence," and applications within these areas. In order to better reflect novel trends and the diversity of topics, the conference was organized in four tracks: Cloud Intelligence, Data Warehousing, Knowledge Discovery, and Industry and Applications.

"Exploring Particles and Nuclei" is a comprehensive guide to the fascinating realm of subatomic physics. We delve into the fundamental building blocks of matter, from the intricate structure of atomic nuclei to the diverse array of particles that populate the universe. We begin by unraveling the mysteries of the nucleus, exploring proton-neutron interactions, nuclear forces, and the stability of atomic nuclei. The book covers nuclear reactions, including fusion, fission, and radioactive decay, shedding light on the processes that power stars and fuel nuclear technologies. Moving beyond the nucleus, we discuss quarks, leptons, and the fundamental forces governing their interactions. Readers will explore the Standard Model of particle physics, understanding the electromagnetic, weak, and strong forces, as well as the role of bosons and fermions. The book also covers advanced topics such as particle accelerators, collisions, and the search for new particles and phenomena. We discuss the role of particle detectors in experimental physics and the implications of particle physics in cosmology and astrophysics. With clear explanations, insightful discussions, and engaging illustrations, "Exploring Particles and Nuclei" is suitable for students, educators, and anyone curious about the nature of matter and the forces shaping our universe. Whether you're delving into nuclear physics for the first time or seeking a deeper understanding, this book provides a captivating journey into particle and nuclear physics.

One of the Washington Post's Best Nonfiction Books of 2022 A leading philosopher takes a mind-bending journey through virtual worlds, illuminating the nature of reality and our place within it. Virtual reality is genuine reality; that’s the central thesis of Reality+. In a highly original work of “technophilosophy,” David J. Chalmers gives a compelling analysis of our technological future. He argues that virtual worlds are not second-class worlds, and that we can live a meaningful life in virtual reality. We may even be in a virtual world already. Along the way, Chalmers conducts a grand tour of big ideas in philosophy and science. He uses virtual reality technology to offer a new perspective on long-established philosophical questions. How do we know that there’s an external world? Is there a god? What is the nature of reality? What’s the relation between mind and body? How can we lead a good life? All of these questions are illuminated or transformed by Chalmers’ mind-bending analysis. Studded with illustrations that bring philosophical issues to life, Reality+ is a major statement that will shape discussion of philosophy, science, and technology for years to come.
