Bringing to light the long-shrouded symbolism and startling spiritual depth that renowned director Stanley Kubrick packed into every detail of his iconic films, this book excavates the subtle ways Kubrick calls attention to universal truths and shocking realities still pervading our society. It cites the master director's use of encoded graphic symbols, signifying light effects, doppelgangers, esoteric color-coding, and framing techniques that communicate Kubrick's underlying topics. Beginning with an exploration of the inspirational themes of his classic science fiction film 2001: A Space Odyssey, including the multilayered meaning of the Monolith, this book traces the themes and symbols encrypted in the films that followed during the director's impressive career. It reveals the oblique methods Kubrick used to underscore a wide range of humanitarian alarms covered in films as diverse as A Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon, The Shining, Full Metal Jacket, and Eyes Wide Shut, and the fascinating links these films have to one another. Surprising revelations discovered in Dr. Strangelove, Spartacus, Lolita, and Paths of Glory are also unveiled for the first time.

Eyes Wide Shut is open to several interpretations, none of which fits perfectly to all parts and aspects of the film. And this is exactly what makes the movie so intriguing: its ambiguity and loose ends, which leave interpretation to the viewer.

Acclaimed in an international critics poll as one of the ten best films ever made, Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey has nonetheless baffled critics and filmgoers alike. Its reputation rests largely on its awesome special effects, yet the plot has been considered unfathomable. Critical consensus has been that Kubrick himself probably didn't know the answers. Leonard Wheat's Kubrick's 2001: A Triple Allegory reveals that Kubrick did know the answers. Far from being what it seems to be—a chilling story about space travel—2001 is actually an allegory, hidden by symbols. It is, in fact, a triple allegory, something unprecedented in film or literature. Three allegories—an Odysseus (Homer) allegory, a man-machine symbiosis (Arthur Clarke) allegory, and a Zarathustra (Nietzsche) allegory—are simultaneously concealed and revealed by well over 200 highly imaginative and sometimes devilishly clever symbols. Wheat "decodes" each allegory in rich detail, revealing the symbolism in numerous characters, sequences, and scenes. In bringing Kubrick's secrets to light, Wheat builds a powerful case for his assertion that 2001 is the "grandest motion picture ever filmed."

In 1971, Deleuze and Guattari's collaborative work, Anti-Oedipus: Capitalism and Schizophrenia caused an international sensation by fusing Marx with a radically rewritten Freud to produce a new approach to critical thinking, which they provocatively called "schizoanalysis." Deleuze and the Schizoanalysis of Cinema explores the possibilities of using this concept to investigate cinematic works in both the Hollywood and non-Hollywood tradition. It attempts to define what a schizoanalysis of cinema might be and introduces a variety of ways in which a schizoanalysis might be applied. This collection opens up a fresh field of inquiry for Deleuze scholars and poses an exciting challenge to cinema studies in general. Featuring some of the most important cinema studies scholars working on Deleuze and Guattari today, Deleuze and the Schizoanalysis of Cinema is a cutting edge collection that will set the agenda for future work in this area. Contributors include: Gregory Flaxman, Amy Herzog, Joe Hughes, Gregg Lambert, Patricia MacCormack, Bill Marshall, David Martin-Jones, Elena Oxman, Patricia Pisters, Anna Powell and Mark Riley.

The six chapters assembled in The Kubrick Legacy showcase important trends in the evolution of filmmaker Stanley Kubrick’s artistic legacy. In the 20 years since his death an enormous range of information and scholarship has surfaced, in part from the Kubrick estate’s public preservation, archiving, exhibition and promulgation of the auteur’s staggering collection of research materials and film artefacts. These essays from international scholars chart incarnations of the official Kubrick exhibition of extensive artifacts touring the globe for the past decade; the filmmaker’s lasting impact on established authors with whom he collaborated; the profound influence of Kubrick’s use of existing music in film scores; the exponential rise of conspiracy theories and (mis)interpretation of his work since his death; the repeated imitation of and homage to his oeuvre across decades of international television advertising; and the (re)discovery of Kubrick on screen in both documentary form and dramatic characterization. The Kubrick Legacy provides a tantalizing, critical snapshot of the enduring impact and influence of one of the twentieth century’s most enigmatic and consummate screen artists.

Stanley Kubrick written by Randy Rasmussen and has been published by McFarland this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-11-16 with Performing Arts categories.

Stanley Kubrick had a great talent for creating memorable images--such as his famous jump cut from a bone tossed into the prehistoric sky to a spaceship orbiting the earth in 2001. Like the composer of a great symphony, Kubrick also had the ability to draw his memorable moments into a lyrical whole. Balancing harmony with discord, he kept viewers on edge by constantly shifting relationships among the dramatic elements in his movies. The results often confounded expectations and provoked controversy, right up through Eyes Wide Shut, the last film of his life. This book is an intensive, scene-by-scene analysis of Kubrick's most mature work--seven meticulously wrought films, from Dr. Strangelove to Eyes Wide Shut. In these films, Kubrick dramatized the complexity and mutability of the human struggle, in settings so diverse that some critics have failed to see the common threads. Rasmussen traces those threads and reveals the always shifting, always memorable, always passionately rendered pattern. A Depth Psychological Study Of The Peace Symbol written by Michelle Rivera-Clonch and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-07-05 with Psychology categories.

This engaging new book uncovers the cultural context behind the peace symbol’s emergence, its growing significance in the 1960s, and its ongoing presence in today’s worldwide grassroots and nonviolent social action protests. Since its debut in 1958, the peace symbol has become a ubiquitous presence in broadcasted images of protest and resistance, yet most citizens are unaware of the symbol’s history or psychological evolution. It is a unique modern symbol in that it is at once an omnipresent and yet entirely unknown entity. This noteworthy text engages readers in fresh and thought-provoking ways around the interdependent relationships of peace and war, recognition and secrets, symbol and chaos, and action and inaction to name a few. In this book, Rivera-Clonch brings a depth psychological analysis to Post-World War II’s escalating nuclear tensions and rhetoric and links it to today’s increasing consciousness around social injustices and nonviolent activism. This is a timely and relevant interdisciplinary case study exploring the peace symbol through the dimensions of cultural secrets and psychological shadow, nuclearized storytelling and symbology, and grassroots nonviolent social action. A Depth Psychological Study of the Peace Symbol will be of interest to Jungian and depth psychologists, as well as students and scholars of peace studies and psychology.

Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject Film Science, grade: 2,0 (B), University of Cologne (English Seminar), course: Film Makers at Work, 18 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Film has for a long time been neglected as an art: Sophisticated analysis has mainly been dealing with written literature as ‘the real thing’. In recent years the making of films has become more and more accepted as an art. Films are analysed and dealt with at universities and have become an essential part of school curricula. Nowadays cinematic theory is treated equally to written literature and “as a fully matured art, film is no longer a separate enterprise but an integrated pattern in the warp and woof of our culture” . In order to develop an ability to understand this art one has to learn to read its codes and interpret their meaning. The following paper will deal with the role of communication in film and examine different levels on which filmic articulation takes place. Communication is an indispensable element for films, not only do characters communicate on the level of the plot but also the process of creating, showing and perceiving a film can be regarded as communication. It is this communication that allows the course of an action to be told and understood in the first place. A film is information, it is a message that is transmitted to a recipient, i.e. the audience. There are, however, problems to define who the sender of this message is. In Chapter 2 of this essay I will try to find a solution to this problem. Chapter 3 will put a focus on communication between the characters in this movie including some ways of non-verbal communication. Chapter 4 deals with a special way of communication which is a central point in Kubrick’s film: I will show how the unconscious can send messages to the conscious and how these messages can be interpreted. A lot of parallels can be drawn between film and written literature. There are, however, some vital differences between the two genres. I will therefore make general comparisons between the language of books and that of cinema where it appears important and promotes understanding. I will apply examples from the movie “Eyes Wide Shut” (1999) by Stanley Kubrick to illustrate the theoretical approaches of my work. The main points of this paper are summarised in a conclusion in Chapter 5.

How do the films of Kubrick communicate mental events of characters in a purely visual manner? And how does the music in his films express meaning when music in essence is an abstract and non-representational art form? Drawing on state-of-the-art discoveries within embodied cognitive science, this book sets out to address these and other questions by revealing Kubrick as a genuine artist of embodied meaning-making, a filmmaker who perhaps more than any other director, uses all the resources of filmmaking in such a controlled and dense manner as to elicit the embodied tools necessary to achieve a level of conceptual clarity.
