Plato S Laws written by Seth Benardete and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-01-05 with Philosophy categories.

An insightful commentary on Plato’s Laws, his complex final work. The Laws was Plato’s last work, his longest, and one of his most difficult. In contrast to the Republic, which presents an abstract ideal, the Laws appears to provide practical guidelines for the establishment and maintenance of political order in the real world. Classicist Seth Benardete offers a rich analysis of each of the twelve books of the Laws, which illuminates Plato’s major themes and arguments concerning theology, the soul, justice, and education. Most importantly, Benardete shows how music in a broad sense, including drama, epic poetry, and even puppetry, mediates between reason and the city in Plato’s philosophy of law. Benardete also uncovers the work’s concealed ontological dimension, explaining why it is hidden and how it can be brought to light. In establishing the coherence and underlying organization of Plato’s last dialogue, Benardete makes a significant contribution to Platonic studies.

Academic Paper from the year 2024 in the subject Philosophy - Philosophy of the Ancient World, grade: 5.0, Obafemi Awolowo University, course: Dramatic Arts, language: English, abstract: Plato's Theory of Forms, a cornerstone of Western philosophy, offers a profound lens through which to examine the nature of reality. In "The Republic", Plato delves into the concept of Forms, positing that what we perceive in the physical world is but a shadow of a higher, immutable reality. This article critically analyzes Plato's Theory of Forms within the context of drama and theatre, exploring how written drama and theatrical performances serve as reflections of real-life events, albeit through a filtered lens. By examining mise en scene, actors, and media representations etc., this study reveals the intricate and symbiotic relationship between art and reality, as envisioned by Plato. Plato's Theory of Forms challenges us to question the nature of reality and the validity of our perceptions. By critically examining drama, theatre and media representations, we can gain insight into the ways in which art reflects, distorts, and interprets reality. While written drama, theatrical performances, and media representations may offer glimpses of truth, they ultimately remain shadows of a higher reality, as envisioned by Plato. Through philosophical inquiry and artistic exploration, we continue the timeless quest to apprehend the eternal Forms that lie beyond the veil of appearances.

The Discovery Of Things written by Wolfgang-Rainer Mann and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-11-10 with Philosophy categories.

Aristotle's Categories can easily seem to be a statement of a naïve, pre-philosophical ontology, centered around ordinary items. Wolfgang-Rainer Mann argues that the treatise, in fact, presents a revolutionary metaphysical picture, one Aristotle arrives at by (implicitly) criticizing Plato and Plato's strange counterparts, the "Late-Learners" of the Sophist. As Mann shows, the Categories reflects Aristotle's discovery that ordinary items are things (objects with properties). Put most starkly, Mann contends that there were no things before Aristotle. The author's argument consists of two main elements. First, a careful investigation of Plato which aims to make sense of the odd-sounding suggestion that things do not show up as things in his ontology. Secondly, an exposition of the theoretical apparatus Aristotle introduces in the Categories--an exposition which shows how Plato's and the Late-Learners' metaphysical pictures cannot help but seem inadequate in light of that apparatus. In doing so, Mann reveals that Aristotle's conception of things--now so engrained in Western thought as to seem a natural expression of common sense--was really a hard-won philosophical achievement. Clear, subtle, and rigorously argued, The Discovery of Things will reshape our understanding of some of Aristotle's--and Plato's--most basic ideas.

This book examines the Socratic method of elenchus, or refutation. Refutation by its very nature is a conflict, which in the hands of Plato becomes high drama. The continuing conversation in which it occurs is more a test of character than of intellect. Dialogue and Discovery shows that, in his conversations, Socrates seeks to define moral qualities—moral essences—with the goal of improving the soul of the respondent. Ethics underlies epistemology because the discovery of philosophic truth imposes moral demands on the respondent. The recognition that moral qualities such as honesty, humility, and courage are necessary to successful inquiry is the key to the understanding of the Socratic paradox that virtue is knowledge. The dialogues receiving the most emphasis are the Apology, Gorgias, Protagoras, and Meno.

Recollection And Experience written by Dominic Scott and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995-08-17 with Education categories.

Questions about learning and discovery have fascinated philosophers from Plato onwards. Does the mind bring innate resources of its own to the process of learning or does it rely wholly upon experience? Plato was the first philosopher to give an innatist response to this question and in doing so was to provoke the other major philosophers of ancient Greece to give their own rival explanations of learning. This book examines these theories of learning in relation to each other. It presents an entirely different interpretation of the theory of recollection which also changes the way we understand the development of ancient philosophy after Plato. The final section of the book compares ancient theories of learning with the seventeenth-century debate about innate ideas, and finds that the relation between the two periods is far more interesting and complete than is usually supposed.
