These memoirs, illustrated with over 400 photographs, will delight anyone interested in gardens or in the Roman world. They tell the human and the scientific story of how a woman from a small town in Nebraska learned more about the gardens of Pompeii than anyone thought possible. A master raconteur, professor of ancient history and teacher of a popular general humanities class at the University of Maryland, Wilhelmina Jashemski will fascinate both the Pompeian expert and the newcomer to the subject. She set out in 1955 with her husband, Stanley Jashemski, to explore the gardens of the Roman empire with the intent to write a scholarly book on the subject. At first she thought Pompeii would be only one chapter. As she got into the subject, however, she realized that many years were required to do justice to the gardens of the Vesuvian area alone. In 1961, the Italian authorities, impressed by the thoroughness of her study of existing materials, allowed her to re-excavate an open area. She surprised everyone by finding root cavities and revealing the planting pattern of an ancient vineyard. She was then able to excavate extensively in Pompeii and at the newly discovered grand villa of Oplontis nearby. Stanley Jashemski, a physicist by profession, became a skilled photographer, draftsman, and general travel and research manager. Using the best photographic equipment available at the time, he recorded both the results of their research and the life around them. In this volume, his pictures illustrate findings and events in Pompeii and Oplontis and also the stories of their travels through England, France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Poland, Greece, Egypt, Spain and Portugal. The intended chapter on Pompeii turned into two magnificent volumes, The Gardens of Pompeii, Herulaneum and the Villas Destroyed by Vesuvius, for which Wilhelmina received the gold medal of the American Institute of Archaeology. She involved numerous natural scientists in the study of material from her field work, and together they produced a third volume, The Natural History of Pompeii. Her letters to her sister's children became the basis of a much-loved children's book, Letters from Pompeii, which remains an excellent introduction to Pompeii for children of any age, 8 to 80. Her observations of the use of herbs for medicine by her workers led to the book A Pompeian Herbal. Stanley's magnificent photographs were complemented by Wilhelmina's knowledge of ancient writings on herbs in Wildflowers Amid the Ruins. Now again Stanley's pictures combine with Wilhelmina's words in this posthumous publication of her memoirs of a remarkable life. All photographs in this edition are in full color. A black-and-white edition is available at a lower cost. The text and pictures are otherwise the same in both editions.

A study of Pompeiian frescoes reveals that the Vesuvian landscape of 79 AD included a vast and beautiful variety of fauna and flora. This lavishly illustrated volume combines botanical images depicted in Pompeiian art with present-day photographs of gardens in the region to give a complete understanding of the fruits, vegetables, pollens, seeds, and other plants of Pompeii. An appendix of botanical Latin names helps readers identify the plants featured in this handsome, informative book.

Pompeii is a must-see sight for many of Campania's tourists. Its tragic and dramatic end, coupled with the chance to explore the houses, temples, bathhouses and brothels of an ancient city, is for many too strong a lure to resist. Most guides of the city concentrate on the archaeology of the city. But this is a guide with a difference. Instead of simply considering each building in isolation, 'Discovering Pompeii' uses them to tell three stories from the town's life-and death.'Civic Pompeii' takes the reader through the history of the city, from its Oscan beginnings to its Roman pinnacle via its public and civic buildings while 'A Walk down the Via dell Abbondanza' is an exploration of the daily life of the town. Finally, 'Pompeii's Last Days' explores each stage of the eruption that destroyed the town in 79AD.Detailed information about visiting the site and maps of the story routes makes 'Discovering Pompeii ' the perfect guide for exploring the town-as well as learning about its history. This edition comes with full colour maps and photographs.

Science in Byzantium has rarely been systematically explored. A first of its kind, this collection of essays highlights the disciplines, achievements, and contexts of Byzantine science across the eleven centuries of the Byzantine empire. After an introduction on science in Byzantium and the 21st century, and a study of Christianization and the teaching of science in Byzantium, it offers a comprehensive and up-to-date survey of the scientific disciplines cultivated in Byzantium, from the exact to the natural sciences, medicine, polemology, and the occult sciences. The volume showcases the diversity and vivacity of the varied scientific endeavours in the Byzantine world across its long history, and aims to bring the field into broader conversations within Byzantine studies, medieval studies, and history of science. Contributors are Fabio Acerbi, Anne-Laurence Caudano, Gonzalo Andreotti Cruz, Katerina Ierodiakonou, Herve Inglebert, Stavros Lazaris, Divna Manolova, Maria K. The sudden destruction of Pompeii, Herculaneum and the surrounding Campanian countryside following the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79 preserved the remarkable evidence that has made possible this reconstruction of the natural history of the local environment. Following the prototype of Pliny the Elder's Natural History, various aspects of the natural history of Pompeii are discussed and analyzed by a team of eminent scientists, many of whom have collaborated with Jashemski during her years of excavation of several gardens in the Vesuvian area. This volume brings together the work of geologists, soil specialists, paleobotanists, botanists, palaeontologists, biologists, chemists, dendrochronologists, ichthyologists, zoologists, ornithologists, mammalogists, herpetologists, entymologists, and archaeologists, affording a thorough picture of the landscape, flora, and fauna of the ancient sites. The detailed and rigorously scientific catalogues, which are copiously illustrated, provide a checklist of the flora and fauna upon which future generations of scholars can continue to build.

Almost twenty years after forbidding him to contact her, Vita receives a letter from a man who has long stalked her from a distance. Once, Royce was her benefactor and she was one of his brightest protégées. Now Royce is ailing and Vita’s career as a filmmaker has stalled, and both have reasons for wanting to settle accounts. They enter into an intimate game of words, played according to shifting rules of engagement. Beyond their murky shared history, they are both aware they can use each other to free themselves from deeper pasts. Vita is processing the shameful inheritance of her birthplace, and making sense of the disappearance of her beloved. Royce is haunted by memories of the untimely death of his first love, an archaeologist who worked in the Garden of the Fugitives in Pompeii. Between what’s been repressed and what has been disguised are disturbances that reach back through decades, even centuries. But not everything from the past is precious: each gorgeous age is built around a core of rottenness. Profoundly addictive and unsettling, In the Garden of the Fugitives is a masterful novel of duplicity and counterplay, as brilliantly illuminating as it is surprising—about the obscure workings of guilt in the human psyche, the compulsion to create and control, and the dangerous morphing of desire into obsession.
