Petri nets do not designate a single modeling formalism. In fact, newcomers to the field confess sometimes to be a little puzzled by the diversity of formalisms that are recognized under this "umbrella". Disregarding some extensions to the theoretical modeling capabilities, and looking at the level of abstraction of the formalisms, Condition/Event, Elementary, Place/Transition, Predicate/Transition, Colored, Object Oriented... net systems are frequently encountered in the literature. On the other side, provided with appropriate interpretative extensions, Controled Net Systems, Marking Diagrams (the Petri net generalization of State Diagrams), or the many-many variants in which time can be explicitly incorporated -Time(d), Deterministic, (Generalized) Stochastic, Fuzzy...- are defined. This represents another way to define practical formalisms that can be obtained by the "cro- product" of the two mentioned dimensions. Thus Petri nets constitute a modeling paradigm, understandable in a broad sense as "the total pattern of perceiving, conceptualising, acting, validating and valuing associated with a particular image of reality that prevails in a science or a branch of science" (Thomas S. Kuhn).

More and more, our society and economy rely on the correct operation of, often hidden, critical infrastructures. These infrastructures such as the power grid and water and gas distribution networks, play an important role in our everyday life. Continuous supply of services from these assets is essential for people, organizations, and for the security and economy of our society. It is of substantial value to know or estimate how quickly such systems recover to acceptable levels of service after the occurrence of failures, natural disasters, e.g., fire, earthquakes, or cyber-attacks. Critical infrastructure and naturally hybrid, i.e., one needs both discrete and continuous quantities to realistically describe their behaviour. More-over, in many modern applications there is an intrinsic uncertainty. This is particularly true for dependability analysis of critical infrastructures, where one must model the occurrence of failure and repair in a system. In this dissertation we propose the use of an extended version of stochastic hybrid Petri nets. This modelling formalism combines discrete and continuous quantities with random discrete events. Furthermore, Petri nets provide a high level and easy-to-understand formalism. Particularly, we consider so called Hybrid Petri nets with General transitions (HPnG). The term general transition refers to the arbitrary nature of probability distribution that can be associated with stochastic variables in this model. HPnGs form a restricted subclass of stochastic hybrid models. The arbitrary nature of random discrete events in HPnGs is the main challenge for their analysis. We tackle the analysis of HPnGs by a conditioning argument on the occurrence times of random discrete events. This idea leads to an efficient generation of the underlying state space, which provides us with a structure such that measures of interest can be computed exacly and effectively. Unfortunately, the exact computation of measures of interests for complex syst

In recent decades, Petri nets (PNs) have been used to model traffic networks for different purposes, such as signal phase control, routing, and traffic flow estimation, etc. Because of the complex nature of traffic networks where both discrete and continuous dynamics come into play, the Hybrid Petri net (HPN) model becomes an important tool for the modeling and analysis of traffic networks. In Chapter 1 a brief historical summery about traffic systems control and then related work is mentioned followed by the major contributions in this research. Chapter 2 provides a theoretical background on Petri nets. In Chapter 3, we develop a HPN model for a single signalized intersection first, then we extend this model to study a simple traffic network that consists of two successive intersections. Time delays between different points of network are also considered in order to make the model suitable for analysis and simulation. In addition to HPN models, we also consider discrete Petri nets where their modeling simplicity enables the characterization of the occurrences of all events in the system. This discrete PN is particularly useful to give a higher-level representation of the traffic network and study its event occurrences and correlations. In Chapter 4, we build a discrete PN model to represent a traffic network with two successive intersections. However, we find that the model leads to unbounded places which cannot accurately reflect the dynamics of the traffic in terms of event occurrences. Hence, we introduce the Modified Binary Petri nets (MBPN) to overcome the limitation and resolve the confliction problem when we design our controllers. This MBPN model is a powerful tool and can be useful for the modeling and analysis of many other applications in traffic networks. Chapter 5 gives a summary for each chapter, provides conclusion and discusses future work for both discrete and hybrid Petri nets.

Petri Net Models Of Microgrids With Distributed Generators written by Xiaoyu Lu and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015 with categories.

This thesis introduces some basic concepts and control methods about a microgrid. Then, two hot issues are investigated. One is how to control multiple distributed generators; and another is how to model both discrete event and continuous behaviors of a microgrid. To address these two issues, this thesis work applies Petri nets to both modeling and control of a microgrid. Ordinary Petri nets, hybrid Petri nets, and finite capacity Petri nets, are introduced with their examples targeted at modeling the behavior of a microgrid. Coordination control of multiple distributed generators based on a Petri net model is proposed. Compared with multi-V/f control, the Petri net based control enables the system to operate with a longer stable time interval. Finally, a hybrid Petri net model is constructed to model both discrete event and continuous behaviors of an on-load tap changing transformer system. Compared with an algebraic method, the hybrid Petri net offers a clear and easy-to-understand method to describe such a system.

Control of Discrete-event Systems provides a survey of the most important topics in the discrete-event systems theory with particular focus on finite-state automata, Petri nets and max-plus algebra. Coverage ranges from introductory material on the basic notions and definitions of discrete-event systems to more recent results. Special attention is given to results on supervisory control, state estimation and fault diagnosis of both centralized and distributed/decentralized systems developed in the framework of the Distributed Supervisory Control of Large Plants (DISC) project. Later parts of the text are devoted to the study of congested systems though fluidization, an over approximation allowing a much more efficient study of observation and control problems of timed Petri nets. Finally, the max-plus algebraic approach to the analysis and control of choice-free systems is also considered. Control of Discrete-event Systems provides an introduction to discrete-event systems for readers that are not familiar with this class of systems, but also provides an introduction to research problems and open issues of current interest to readers already familiar with them. Most of the material in this book has been presented during a Ph.D. school held in Cagliari, Italy, in June 2011.

This book offers a new Modular Petri Net as a solution to the vast Petri net models. It presents some approaches centering around modules (known as “Petri modules”). The goal of this book is to introduce a methodology in which Petri nets are moved to a new level. In this new level, large Petri net models are made of Petri modules, which are independent and run on different computers. This book also contains the literature study on modular Petri nets and definitions for the newer Petri modules. Also, algorithms for extracting Petri modules, and algorithms for connecting Petri modules, and applications are given in this book. Besides, the ideas and algorithms given in this book are implemented in the software General-purpose Petri Net Simulator (GPenSIM). Hence, with the use of this book the readers/users would be able to know that real-life discrete event systems could be modeled, analyzed, and performance-optimized with GPenSIM.

This book introduces a formalism for modeling complex and large-scale systems that merges Petri nets, differential equation systems, and object-oriented methods. It describes a method that starts from the requirements of a supervisory system and results in a proposal for such a system. The book also presents a validation procedure that allows verification of the formal properties of the hybrid model.
