"This book revives and vastly expands the classical theory of resultants and discriminants. Most of the main new results of the book have been published earlier in more than a dozen joint papers of the authors. The book nicely complements these original papers with many examples illustrating both old and new results of the theory."—Mathematical Reviews

Introduction To Toric Varieties Am 131 Volume 131 written by William Fulton and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-03-02 with Mathematics categories.
Toric varieties are algebraic varieties arising from elementary geometric and combinatorial objects such as convex polytopes in Euclidean space with vertices on lattice points. Since many algebraic geometry notions such as singularities, birational maps, cycles, homology, intersection theory, and Riemann-Roch translate into simple facts about polytopes, toric varieties provide a marvelous source of examples in algebraic geometry. In the other direction, general facts from algebraic geometry have implications for such polytopes, such as to the problem of the number of lattice points they contain. In spite of the fact that toric varieties are very special in the spectrum of all algebraic varieties, they provide a remarkably useful testing ground for general theories. The aim of this mini-course is to develop the foundations of the study of toric varieties, with examples, and describe some of these relations and applications. The text concludes with Stanley's theorem characterizing the numbers of simplicies in each dimension in a convex simplicial polytope. Although some general theorems are quoted without proof, the concrete interpretations via simplicial geometry should make the text accessible to beginners in algebraic geometry.

It is very tempting but a little bit dangerous to compare the style of two great mathematicians or of their schools. I think that it would be better to compare papers from both schools dedicated to one area, geometry and to leave conclusions to a reader of this volume. The collaboration of these two schools is not new. One of the best mathematics journals Functional Analysis and its Applications had I.M. Gelfand as its chief editor and V.I. Arnold as vice-chief editor. Appearances in one issue of the journal presenting remarkable papers from seminars of Arnold and Gelfand always left a strong impact on all of mathematics. We hope that this volume will have a similar impact. Papers from Arnold's seminar are devoted to three important directions developed by his school: Symplectic Geometry (F. Lalonde and D. McDuff), Theory of Singularities and its applications (F. Aicardi, I. Bogaevski, M. Kazarian), Geometry of Curves and Manifolds (S. Anisov, V. Chekanov, L. Guieu, E. Mourre and V. Ovsienko, S. Gusein-Zade and S. Natanzon). A little bit outside of these areas is a very interesting paper by M. Karoubi Produit cyclique d'espaces et operations de Steenrod.

"Sources in the Development of Mathematics: Series and Products from the Fifteenth to the Twenty-first Century, my book of 2011, was intended for an audience of graduate students or beyond. However, since much of its mathematics lies at the foundations of the undergraduate mathematics curriculum, I decided to use portions of my book as the text for an advanced undergraduate course. I was very pleased to find that my curious and diligent students, of varied levels of mathematical talent, could understand a good bit of the material and get insight into mathematics they had already studied as well as topics with which they were unfamiliar. Of course, the students could profitably study such topics from good textbooks. But I observed that when they read original proofs, perhaps with gaps or with slightly opaque arguments, students gained very valuable insight into the process of mathematical thinking and intuition. Moreover, the study of the steps, often over long periods of time, by which earlier mathematicians refined and clarified their arguments revealed to my students the essential points at the crux of those results, points that may be more difficult to discern in later streamlined presentations. As they worked to understand the material, my students witnessed the difficulty and beauty of original mathematical work and this was a source of great enjoyment to many of them. I have now thrice taught this course, with extremely positive student response"--

Topics In Algebraic Geometry And Geometric Modeling written by Ron Goldman and has been published by American Mathematical Soc. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Mathematics categories.
Algebraic geometry and geometric modeling both deal with curves and surfaces generated by polynomial equations. Algebraic geometry investigates the theoretical properties of polynomial curves and surfaces; geometric modeling uses polynomial, piecewise polynomial, and rational curves and surfaces to build computer models of mechanical components and assemblies for industrial design and manufacture. The NSF sponsored the four-day ''Vilnius Workshop on Algebraic Geometry and Geometric Modeling'', which brought together some of the top experts in the two research communities to examine a wide range of topics of interest to both fields. This volume is an outgrowth of that workshop. Included are surveys, tutorials, and research papers. In addition, the editors have included a translation of Minding's 1841 paper, ''On the determination of the degree of an equations obtained by elimination'', which foreshadows the modern application of mixed volumes in algebraic geometry. The volume is suitable for mathematicians, computer scientists, and engineers interested in applications of algebraic geometry to geometric modeling.

Computational Methods In Mechanical Systems written by Jorge Angeles and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-06-29 with Technology & Engineering categories.
The chapters of this book summarize the lectures delivered du ring the NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on Computational Methods in Mechanisms, that took place in the Sts. Constantin and Elena Resort, near Varna, on the Bulgarian Coast of the Black Sea, June 16-28, 1997. The purpose of the ASI was to bring together leading researchers in the area of mechanical systems at large, with special emphasis in the computational issues around their analysis, synthesis, and optimization, during two weeks of lectures and discussion. A total of 89 participants from 23 count ries played an active role during the lectures and sessions of contributed papers. Many of the latter are being currently reviewed for publication in specialized journals. The subject of the book is mechanical systems, Le. , systems composed of rigid and flexible bodies, coupled by mechanical means so as to constrain their various bodies in a goal-oriented manner, usually driven under computer con trol. Applications of the discipline are thus of the most varied nature, ranging from transportation systems to biomedical devices. U nder normal operation conditions, the constitutive bodies of a mechanical system can be consid ered to be rigid, the rigidity property then easing dramatically the analysis of the kinematics and dynamics of the system at hand. Examples of these systems are the suspension of a terrestrial vehicle negotiating a curve at speeds within the allowed or recommended limits and the links of multiaxis industrial robots performing conventional pick-and-place operations.
