A balanced mechanics-materials approach and coverage of the latest developments in biomaterials and electronic materials, the new edition of this popular text is the most thorough and modern book available for upper-level undergraduate courses on the mechanical behavior of materials. To ensure that the student gains a thorough understanding the authors present the fundamental mechanisms that operate at micro- and nano-meter level across a wide-range of materials, in a way that is mathematically simple and requires no extensive knowledge of materials. This integrated approach provides a conceptual presentation that shows how the microstructure of a material controls its mechanical behavior, and this is reinforced through extensive use of micrographs and illustrations. New worked examples and exercises help the student test their understanding. Further resources for this title, including lecture slides of select illustrations and solutions for exercises, are available online at www.cambridge.org/97800521866758.

This edition has been greatly enlarged and updated to provide both scientists and engineers with a clear and comprehensive understanding of composite materials. In describing both theoretical and practical aspects of their production, properties and usage, the book crosses the borders of many disciplines. Topics covered include: fibres, matrices, laminates and interfaces; elastic deformation, stress and strain, strength, fatigue crack propagation and creep resistance; toughness and thermal properties; fatigue and deterioration under environmental conditions; fabrication and applications. Coverage has been increased to include polymeric, metallic and ceramic matrices and reinforcement in the form of long fibres, short fibres and particles. Designed primarily as a teaching text for final-year undergraduates in materials science and engineering, this book will also interest undergraduates and postgraduates in chemistry, physics, and mechanical engineering. In addition, it will be an excellent source book for academic and technological researchers on materials.

How do engineering materials deform when bearing mechanical loads? To answer this crucial question, the book bridges the gap between continuum mechanics and materials science. The different kinds of material deformation are explained in detail. The book also discusses the physical processes occurring during the deformation of all classes of engineering materials and shows how these materials can be strengthened to meet the design requirements. It provides the knowledge needed in selecting the appropriate engineering material for a certain design problem. This book is both a valuable textbook and a useful reference for graduate students and practising engineers.

The book is intended to describe the basic and newly developed elements of the physics of solids and materials science on mechanical properties of metals with as much continuity as is possible. Particular emphasis has been placed in atomistic and fractal approaches and continuum theory of dislocations is also introduced. Since the book is meant for the two main topics of progress in recent years, some interesting and important topics which have not been discussed or introduced are given in detail. For a long time, pair potentials were used very expensively in simulation studies. They can reproduce usefully total energies for many systems. But when one turns to elastic properties, fracture of surfaces, and the vacancy formation energy, deficiencies and limitations begin to emerge. These limitations of the simple pair potential approximation have been addressed by the development of empirical many-body potentials which is the major theme of our book.Over a decade or more, diverse scientists have recognized that many of the structures common in their experiments have a special kind of geometrical complexity. The key to this progress is the recognition that many random structures obey a symmetry that objects look the same on many different scales of observation. The concept of fractals was introduced by Mandelbrot and applied to fractures by himself and collaborators. Their work pointed to a correlation between toughness and the fractal dimension. Our interest is the fractal aspects of fractured surfaces. We will discuss more in our book. The strain field of a dislocation has a long range part and this part can be discussed rigorously from elasticity theory. Recent progress in elastic strain fields and dislocation mobility were made by Indenbom and Lothe. The elementary essentials will be introduced in our book.

Designing new structural materials, extending lifetimes and guarding against fracture in service are among the preoccupations of engineers, and to deal with these they need to have command of the mechanics of material behaviour. The first volume of this two-volume work deals with elastic and elastoplastic behaviour; this second volume continues with viscoelasticity, damage, fracture (resistance to cracking) and contact mechanics. As in Volume I, the treatment starts from the active mechanisms on the microscopic scale and develops the laws of macroscopic behaviour. Chapter I deals with viscoplastic behaviour, as shown, for example, at low temperatures by the effects of oscillatory loads and at high temperatures by creep under steady load. Chapter 2 treats damage phenomena encountered in all materials - for example, metals, polymers, glasses, concretes - such as cavitation, fatigue and stress-corrosion cracking. Chapter 3 treats those concepts of fracture mechanics that are needed for the understanding of resistance to cracking and Chapter 4 completes the volume with a survey of the main concepts of contact mechanics. As with Volume I, each chapter has a set of exercises, either with solutions or with indications of how to attack the problem; and there are many explanatory diagrams and other illustrations.

Fundamental Aspects Of Dislocation Interactions written by G. Kostorz and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-09-03 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Fundamental Aspects of Dislocation Interactions: Low-Energy Dislocation Structures III covers the papers presented at a European Research Conference on Plasticity of Materials-Fundamental Aspects of Dislocation Interactions: Low-Energy Dislocation Structures III, held on August 30-September 4, 1992 in Ascona, Switzerland. The book focuses on the processes, technologies, reactions, transformations, and approaches involved in dislocation interactions. The selection first offers information on work softening and Hall-Petch hardening in extruded mechanically alloyed alloys and dynamic origin of dislocation structures in deformed solids. Discussions focus on stress-strain behavior in relation to composition, structure, and annealing; comparison of stress-strain curves with work softening theory; sweeping and trapping mechanism; and model of dipolar wall structure formation. The text then ponders on plastic instabilities and their relation to fracture and dislocation and kink dynamics in f.c.c. metals studied by mechanical spectroscopy. The book takes a look at misfit dislocation generation mechanisms in heterostructures and evolution of dislocation structure on the interfaces associated with diffusionless phase transitions. Discussions focus on dislocation representation of a wall of elastic domains; equation of equilibrium of an elastic domain; transformation of dislocations; and theoretical and experimental background. The selection is a valuable reference for readers interested in dislocation interactions.

The subject of mechanical behavior has been in the front line of basic studies in engineering curricula for many years. This textbook was written for engineering students with the aim of presenting, in a relatively simple manner, the basic concepts of mechanical behavior in solid materials. A second aim of the book is to guide students in their laboratory experiments by helping them to understand their observations in parallel with the lectures of their various courses; therefore the first chapter of the book is devoted to mechanical testing. Another aim of the book is to provide practicing engineers with basic help to bridge the gap of time that has passed from their graduation up to their actual involvement in engineering work. The book also serves as the basis for more advanced studies and seminars when pursuing courses on a graduate level. The content of this textbook and the topics discussed correspond to courses that are usually taught in universities and colleges all over the world, but with a different and more modern approach. It is however unique by the inclusion of an extensive chapter on mechanical behavior in the micron and submicron/nanometer range. Mechanical deformation phenomena are explained and often related to the presence of dislocations in structures. Many practical illustrations are provided representing various observations encountered in actual structures of particularly technical significance. A comprehensive list of references at the end of each chapter is included to provide a broad basis for further studying the subject.
