Alcohol and Abnormal Protein Biosynthesis: Biochemical and Clinical focuses on the methods for measuring protein metabolism and the effects of alcohol and altered protein intake as they affect the heart, liver, skeletal muscle, and the brain. Organized into six sections, this book begins with an overview on malnutrition and alcoholism, as well as available techniques for the study of protein synthesis. Subsequent section details the adaptation of protein synthesis and transport to alcohol and malnutrition. Section three discusses the skeletal and cardiac muscle protein metabolism. The last three sections describe the reaction of hepatic protein synthesis to malnutrition and alcohol; effects of alcohol on brain RNA metabolism; and alcohol associated cardiac and hepatic disease.

Parameters such as membrane transport, metabolism and protein incorporation govern the fate of amino acids in living tissue. Is it possible to use positron tomography to measure some of them, and what is their meaning in normal and pathological situations? These questions have been addressed for a long time and no satisfactory answer has yet been given. This book, which derives from an EEC workshop organized in the frame of the Concerted Action on `PET Investigation of Cellular Regeneration and Degeneration', held in Lyon in February 1992, gives the present state of knowledge in this field based on the most recent studies. Contributions from 24 leading European and American scientists are presented and discussed in the following four parts: biochemistry and animal studies; amino acids labelling with positron emittors, quality control and metabolites measurement; kinetic modelling of amino acids transport, metabolism, and protein incorporation; clinical use of amino acids. This book will aid and interest biochemists, radiochemists, pharmacologists, neurologists, oncologists and medical imaging scientists.

Plasma Protein Metabolism written by Marcus Rothschild and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-02 with Nature categories.

Plasma Protein Metabolism: Regulation of Synthesis, Distribution, and Degradation covers the concepts concerning the physiological and pathophysiological factors regulating the distribution, degradation, and synthesis of plasma proteins. This book is organized into nine parts encompassing 32 chapters. The first parts present the assumptions and methodology involved in the various in vivo and in vitro techniques that provide insights to protein metabolism. The next parts describe the techniques of protein isolation, characterization, labeling, and mathematical analysis of the data, as well as the methods for directly quantitating protein synthetic rates in nonsteady state conditions. Other parts are devoted to the factors involved in regulating the serum levels of albumin, acute phase reactants, immunoglobulins, clotting factors, complement and hormone-binding proteins. The controlling factors include such general and specific physiological regulators of protein synthesis and catabolism as levels of specific serum proteins, hormonal regulators, variations of temperature and oncotic pressure, antigenic stimulation, and nutritional factors. The remaining parts analyze the pathophysiological factors including disorders of protein synthesis, distribution, exogenous catabolism, and external loss and stress that produce abnormal levels of serum proteins. This book is intended primarily intended to protein chemists and researchers.

Pathophysiology Of Plasma Protein Metabolism written by Giulian Mariant and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Science categories.

This book represents a factual account of the proceedings of an international symposium on the pathophysiology of plasma protein metabolism, which was organised in October 1982 by the Plasmaprotein and Immunology Division of the C.N.R. Institute of Clinical Physiology at the University of Pisa (Italy). Several of the contributors are former members of the International Study Group on Plasma Protein Metabolism, the last meeting of which was held in Turin (Italy) in 1974, under the auspices of the scientific organisation of the same institute. The symposium took the form of a series of lectures, with the main objective of providing a positive contribution to the state of the art of several topics related to the kinetic and pathophysiological factors regulating the synthesis, distribution and degradation of plasma proteins. The first four chapters form a group, each one considering a special aspect of the kinetics of turnover and distribution of plasma proteins in general; particular attention is paid to the recent advances in the field of kinetic modelling, the choice of the best models and the optimisation of the experimental designs. The next seven chapters consider the regulation of synthesis, distribution and catab olism of various classes of plasma proteins including albumin, immunoglobulins, complement fractions and acute-phase proteins. The remaining chapters deal with metabolic studies of various plasma proteins (including tumour markers, coagUlation proteins and lipoproteins) in different disease states, such as malig nancies, coagulative disorders, malnutrition and the extensive group of athero sclerotic cardiovascular diseases.

This edited volume comprehensively highlights recent advances in the metabolism, nutrition, physiology, and pathobiology of amino acids in all the systems of humans and other animals (including livestock, poultry, companion animals, and fish). It enables readers to understand the crucial roles of amino acids and their metabolites in the health and diseases of the circulatory, digestive, endocrine, immune, muscular, nervous, reproductive, respiratory, skeletal, and urinary systems, as well as the sense organs (eyes, ears, nose, skin, and tongue). Readers will learn that amino acids are not only the building blocks of protein, but are also signalling molecules, as well as regulators of gene expression, metabolic processes and developmental changes in the body. This knowledge will guide nutritional practices to improve the growth, development and health of humans and other animals, as well as prevent and treat chronic (e.g., obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disorders) and infectious (e.g., bacterial, fungal, parasite, and viral) diseases. Editor of this volume is an internationally recognized expert in nutritional biochemistry. He has over 38 years of experience with research and teaching at world-class universities in the area of amino acid biochemistry, nutrition, and physiology. He has published more than 625 papers in peer-reviewed journals, 62 chapters in books, and authored two text/reference books, with an H-index of 117 and more than 55,000 citations in Google Scholar. This publication is a useful reference for professionals as well as undergraduate and graduate students in animal science, biochemistry, biomedical engineering, biology, human medicine, food science, kinesiology, nursing, nutrition, pharmacology, physiology, toxicology, veterinary medicine, and other related disciplines. In addition, all chapters provide general and specific references to amino acids in systems health for researchers and practitioners in biomedicine, animal and plant agriculture, and aquaculture, and for government policy makers.
