An up-to-date, comprehensive review of disorders of the vestibular system authored by some of the most prominent experts in the field, this book covers basic vestibular mechanisms, clinical evaluation, common vestibular diseases, and treatment of vertigo. Part I reviews the anatomy and physiology of the vestibular system focusing on clinically relevant material. Part II analyzes specific details in the patient's history, examination, and laboratory evaluation pointing to the probable site of lesion and likely pathophysiology. Patient history is emphasized since it is the critical first step in understanding the patient's complaints. Part III covers the differential diagnosis and specific treatments of common neurologic disorders. A separate chapter surveys the common syndromes encountered in neurotology. Part IV discusses general principles of treatment relevant to all vestibular disorders. Designed primarily to help physicians who treat patients complaining of dizziness, this book is also a complete source of reference to practitioners in internal medicine, family practice, otolaryngology, neurology, head and neck surgery, and neurosurgery.

The Vestibular System is a collection of papers presented at the 1973 Symposium on the Vestibular System, organized and held at the University of Chicago. This symposium provides a body of reviews and observations on the anatomical, physiological, and clinical aspects of the vestibular system. This book is composed of seven parts encompassing 28 chapters. The first part focuses on the ultrastructure of the peripheral organs and the vestibular pathways to the cerebellum, the spinal cord, and the nuclei of the extraocular muscles. The subsequent part presents the basic information on knowledge of peripheral mechanisms and the functional relations between the vestibular system, cerebellum, oculomotor system, spinal cord and cortex. These topics are followed by descriptions of vestibular disorders induced by a variety of influences or procedures, such as nuclear lesions, motion sickness, and drugs. The next section describes the methods of testing vestibular function, such as electronystagmography. This section serves as an introduction to a panel discussion on eye movements. Lastly, reviews and points of view on peripheral and central vestibular disorders are covered in the remaining sections. This work is of great benefit to anatomists, physiologists, and clinicians.

This text reviews the current understanding of vestibular anatomy allowing for a framework of reference, and how it's applied to vestibular testing, diagnosis and management of dizziness. Vestibular testing is an important tool in the evaluation and management of the patient with dizziness. It aids in establishing a diagnosis and determining the side or site of the lesion. In addition, it guides practitioners in selection of treatment and allows the ability of the patient’s condition to be evaluated over its time course. Common vestibular pathologies such as benign positional vertigo, Meniere’s disease, multisensory imbalance, vestibular neuritis, superior canal dehiscence, and vestibular migraine will be addressed in a concise and understandable manner. The text follows a clear format in which the etiology, pathophysiology, diagnostic features and medical or surgical management of such pathologies are discussed. The book gains increased importance as superior canal dehiscence and vestibular migraine are relatively new hot topics. Lastly, relatively rare entities such as bilateral vestibular hypofunction, pediatric vestibular disorders and central vestibular disorders are discussed. This text serves as a complete reference for clinicians, students and researchers interested in this common and severe disorder allowing for improved patient care and advancement of knowledge in the field. Chapters are written by acknowledged experts, allowing summary review of the newest and most up-to-date understanding of scientific information. Diagnosis and Treatment of Vestibular Disorders will be an invaluable resource for otolaryngologists, neurologists, otologists and neurotologists, basic science and translational researchers with interests in the vestibular system, fellows and residents in aforementioned fields, and general practitioners with an interest in patients with symptoms of dizziness.

Vestibular Disorders, Third Edition, uses a case-study approach to outline the principles and practice of the care of patients with dizziness and balance disorders. The text reflects the combined perspectives and experience of a neurologist (Dr. Furman) a neurotologic surgeon (Dr. Cass), and a physical therapist (Dr. Whitney). Each case study contains relevant material regarding history, physical examination, laboratory testing, differential diagnosis, and treatment. This material provides a springboard for discussion of either a concept in the field of vestibular disorders or the diagnosis or treatment of a particular disease state. Practical, specific treatment options are discussed throughout the book. The book is written to a wide audience and educational level of readers including Primary Care Physicians, Otolaryngologists, Neurologists, Physical Therapist, and Audiologists. The case-format style of the book lends itself to use in teaching programs involving medical students, residents, physical therapy students, and audiology students, and as a reference text for clinicians at the bedside. Each of the cases from the first and second editions have been updated, the background material has been expanded and eight new cases have been added. Vestibular Disorders, Third Edition, aims to span the gap between existing in-depth tests and the problems that arise whenever a patient presents with dizziness.

The function of the vestibular system is not as obvious as those of vision, hearing, touch or smell. Vestibular dysfunction, however, is clearly apparent where lesions are present. It is probably for this reason that the vestibular sense was not discovered until the nineteenth century and that clinicians have continued to playa major role in basic vestibular research right up to the present. The relationship between basic and clinical research is certainly stronger in the vesti bular field than in that of tactile sensation, for instance, as testified by the work of clinicians as MENIERE, BREUER, BARANY, DEKLEIJN and FRENZEL. In this respect the situation is similar in vestibular physiology and in endocrinology, and for the same reason. This second part of the vestibular volume of the Handbook of Sensory Physio logy will be of interest to neurologists, otologists, neurosurgeons, ophthalmologists and physiotherapists on the one hand, and psychologists, physiologists, engineers and aviation specialists on the other. For a full understanding of Part 2, it is necessary to have assimilated the basic anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry of Part 1.
