The increase of globalized manufacturing and foreign direct investments in the past decades had major implications for manufacturing firms. Intra-organizational manufacturing activities are conducted nowadays within networks of factories dispersed worldwide. The term international manufacturing networks (IMNs) established in literature to describe this phenomenon. Although the literature is rich in providing insights on how to organize single factories to be aligned with manufacturing strategy, until now, scholars neglected to investigate how IMNs need to be structured to be in line with and support a manufacturing strategy. Thus, this dissertation examined the fit between fundamental elements characterizing strategy, configuration, and coordination of IMNs. It thereby enhanced the management theory of IMNs and provided valuable information guiding managers towards an alignment of their IMNs. First, a survey was conducted to investigate the relationship between network capabilities and competitive capabilities. While competitive capabilities can be used to define the strategic emphasis of manufacturing strategy, network capabilities can be used to outline the strategic emphasis of IMNs. Understanding the linkages between both concepts helps to comprehend how IMNs can support manufacturing strategy better and to, thus, formulate well-informed strategies for IMNs. Second, a case study was conducted to investigate the linkage between centralization of decision-making of IMNs and network capabilities. The centralization of decision-making is a key issue characterizing the coordination of IMNs. The findings on the link between the two concepts help to understand better how the centralization of decision-making needs to be adjusted to promote specific network capabilities effectively. The integrated management of sites in a global manufacturing network provides a challenge for many manufacturing companies today. The local advantages and capabilities of each manufacturing site offer additional opportunities to a company to create competitive advantages. However, to exploit the local advantages on a global scale, the manufacturing sites have to be coordinated and managed in line with the strategic targets of the network. In the past, site role models were developed through research to support the management of globally dispersed manufacturing sites. Nonetheless many companies still struggle with the definition and assignment of site roles. The main reasons for this are 1) a lack of network perspective on site roles, 2) a missing link to network strategy, and 3) the prevalence of generic roles which neglect the individual network context - altogether prerequisites for an integrated network management. This thesis strives to address the existing shortcomings. Based on a thorough review of literature on international operations management, it develops an approach that combines network and site perspectives, the so-called site role portfolio approach. This approach is empirically validated in three in-depth case studies of global manufacturing networks of different sizes and industries. Focusing on the individual capabilities of manufacturing sites with respect to strategic network targets, the developed approach provides the basis for a comprehensive analysis of the sites and the network. This analysis includes the mapping of the network's as is state and current site roles, the identification of gaps concerning the fulfilment of the network's strategic targets, the definition of company-specific site roles, and the assignment of these roles to the manufacturing sites including the specification of development paths for each site. The configuration and the coordination of a global production network entail various advantages for a company, such as access to factors of production in multiple countries, the flexibility to shift production between different sites and the opportunity to exchange knowledge within the network. Strategic performance measurement can help to coordinate the network of dispersed production sites. Thereby, it has to assess the multifaceted performance of the production sites. By means of literature analysis and synthesis, this thesis first identifies the different performance dimensions towards which a production site can contribute. In a second step, it draws on two site role classifications and analyzes how the site role influences the respective relevance of the identified performance dimensions for different sites. While all production sites directly contribute to the manufacturing priorities, i.e. to the targets set by the company to satisfy customer requirements, the sites in a production network have to be measured in additional performance dimensions. This is due to the fact that they have considerable influence on the advantages or capabilities that a company obtains through the configuration and coordination of the network. Moreover, the site role seems to influence the relevance of the identified dimension and to correlate with the autonomy a site has. This indicates that site roles should be taken into consideration when designing a strategic performance measurement system.
