Excerpt from Dispersion of Gipsy-Moth Larvae by the Wind Many investigations Of various sources of Spread Of this insect were conducted during the early nineties by Forbush and Femald and published by, the Massachusetts State Board Of Agriculture in 1896. It was found that frequent teaming in and Out Of the original infested areas (m'edford, boston, and towns closely surrounding) by vehicles transporting larvae that dropped from infested Shade and roadside trees was largely responsible for the general local Spread during those years. It was also suggested that the larvae were Occasionally trans ported by the wind to distances Of perhaps 100 yards, but no further Observations were made. At that time to substantiate this theory. Numerous ways and means Of local spread, such as by birds, animals, and man, are treated in this valuable report. Excerpt from The Dispersion of the Gipsy Moth, Vol. 119 The dispersion of the species, as treated in the above mentioned report, was considered as local and long distance. The former condition was brought about by egg clusters being broken and scattered by birds or other animals that frequent infested trees. Clusters were also carried on driftwood (see pi. I), and those deposited on leaves (see Pl. II) were so stimes distributed by the wind. The caterpillars were occasionally found clinging to the bodies of animals or to the clothing of persons who had visited infested places and were carried short distances in this way. Many colonies were established in remote districts by the carriage of the larvae on vehicles, and egg clusters were sometimes transported on cordwood or lumber products shipped from infested forests. (see Pl. III.) The distribution of caterpillars upon vehicles was con sidered so important when the gipsy-moth work was begun in 1891 that inspectors were stationed along the main highways to stop and examine all vehicles and to destroy any caterpillars found before allowing them to pass out of the infested area. This precaution was entirely warranted in view of the discovery that many farms had become infested by the transportation of caterpillars on vehicles. Places infested in this manner, however, were usually occupied by milkmen, peddlers, swill gatherers, or persons whose business caused them to drive regularly to and from the city during the summer, or to neighborhoods that were badly infested with the gipsy moth. Excerpt from The Gipsy Moth on Cranberry Bogs In 1913 - 14 C. W. Collins carried on a series Of experiments to de termine the distance young caterpillars would be carried by the wind. The results Of. These experiments are recorded in Bulletin no. 27 3 Of the U. S. Department Of Agriculture, in which it is shown that under favorable conditions the small caterpillars were carried 13% miles. Later experiments have demonstrated that they may be carried 20 miles, and it is probable that under the most favorable conditions the spread is even greater. Excerpt from Caterpillars and Their Moths Fter more than twenty years of studying and rearing moths, of much hunting for information which was not always to be found, of answering the many questions of many children, parents, and teachers, we have decided to put the results of a part of our experience into a form which may help begin ners to avoid our mistakes, to escape the ill results of ignorance, and to get more satisfaction with less fail ure than we had. Therefore we have tried to put into this book all the facts needed for successful work in rearing moths, as much structural detail as beginners need to know, an account of the appliances we have found most useful, and a list of the books which we have used most. Excerpt from Moths and Butterflies These little wasp-like creatures lay their eggs on or in the large moth or butterfly caterpillars. From these eggs develop small grubs that live upon the body of the caterpillar, either seriously weakening the caterpillar or killing it. You may sometime find a caterpillar that looks as though it had groups of small white cocoons over it. It is. Probable that these are the cocoons of one Of these wasp-like parasites that caterpillar OF 10 moth feeds upon the caterpillars. It is The hairs on the back of this caterpillar are poisoned and produce a most disagreeable sensation interesting to know in connection with these wasp-like parasites that they are fully as particular about what they eat as are the caterpillars themselves. The mother wasp will not lay her eggs on just any Old caterpillar any more than will most caterpillars eat just any old green stuff. It is very interesting and important to know about this, particularly when caterpillars are introduced into a new country. If we should accidentally or intentionally bring the eggs Of some cater pillar that thrived On some of our food plants into our country and fail at the same time to bring in its natural enemies, we might have great difficulty in raising those particular food plants successfully. This has happened so frequently that our government has established a_ system whereby plants brought into our country are examined for the purpose of preventing the introduction of injurious insects, some of which might be moth and butterfly caterpillars. For the same reason our government justly demands that certain materials growing in certain areas shall not be moved into other areas. If you read the account Of the fight being made against the gipsy moth, which appeared in the September, 1924, Leaflet, you may get some idea Of how serious a proposition this may be. The September, 1920, Leaflet told you also of the campaign tolimit the activities Of the European corn borer.
