Disputation literature is a type of text in which usually two non-human entities (such as trees, animals, drinks, or seasons) try to establish their superiority over each other by means of a series of speeches written in an elaborate, flowery register. As opposed to other dialogue literature, in disputation texts there is no serious matter at stake only the preeminence of one of the litigants over its rival. These light-hearted texts are known in virtually every culture that flourished in the Middle East from Antiquity to the present day, and they constitute one of the most enduring genres in world literature. The present volume collects over twenty contributions on disputation literature by a diverse group of world-renowned scholars. From ancient Sumer to modern-day Bahrain, from Egyptian to Neo-Aramaic, including Latin, French, Middle English, Armenian, Chinese and Japanese, the chapters of this book study the multiple avatars of this venerable text type.

This book is dedicated to Claudia Römer and brings together 33 contributions spanning a period from the 15th to the 20th century and covering the wide range of topics with which the honouree is engaged. The volume is divided into six parts that present current research on language, literature, and style as well as newer approaches and perspectives in dealing with sources and terminologies. Aspects such as conquest, administration, and financing of provinces are found as well as problems of endowments and the circulation of goods in the Arab provinces of the Ottoman Empire. Another main topic is dedicated to minorities and their role and situation in various provinces and cities of the Ottoman Empire, as represented by various sources. In his Beautifying the Ugly and Uglifying the Beautiful (Taḥsīn al-qabīḥ wa-taqbīḥ al-ḥasan) the prolific anthologist al-Thaʿālibī (d. 429/1038) offers a thematically arranged selection of Arabic poems and prose anecdotes or sayings with contrary or paradoxical purport, such as praise of miserliness, boredom, sickness, and death, or condemnation of generosity, intelligence, youth, and music. Münazara türü hiçbir edebiyatta ana türlerden biri olamamakla birlikte Sümerlerden başka Akad, Babil, Antik Mısır, Antik Yunan, Süryani, İbrani, Ermeni, Arap, Fars, Kore, Vietnam, Tibet, Japon, Latin, İspanyol, Fransız, Alman, İngiliz ve Türk edebiyatı gibi çok çeşitli edebiyatlarda, çok geniş bir coğrafyada kendine yer bulması ve 4000 yıldır varlığını sürdürmesi onu incelemeye değer kılmaktadır. Bu çalışma edebî bir tür olarak münazaranın hem dünya edebiyatındaki seyrini hem de klasik Türk edebiyatındaki verimlerini mercek altına almaktadır. İlk bölümde dünya edebiyatı ölçeğinde edebî münazaranın belli başlı özellikleri ortaya koyulmakta ve mantık biliminin bir alt disiplini olarak münazara ile karşılaştırılmaktadır. İkinci bölümde, yukarıda bahsi geçen edebiyatlardaki münazara birikimi kısaca tanıtılmaktadır. Türkçe literatürde ilk kez bu kadar geniş bir şekilde yer verilen söz konusu bölümün ardından, çalışmanın asıl konusunu oluşturan klasik Türk edebiyatındaki münazaralar ele alınmaktadır. Türklerin İslâmiyet’i kabulünden Osmanlı Devleti’nin son yıllarına kadar geçen süreçte yazılmış olan 50 civarı müstakil münazara metni önce konularına göre, kılıç-kalem, zengin-fakir, zenpâre-gulâmpâre, keyif verici maddeler, yiyecekler, insan-hayvan, hayvan-hayvan münazaralarının yanı sıra tabiat unsurlarının, soyut kavramların ve bir kategoriye girmeyen tekil konuların münazaraları olarak sınıflandırılmıştır. Sonra da her biri özetlenmiş, aynı konulu eserlerin birbirleriyle mukayesesi yapılmış ve eserleri ortaya çıkaran siyasi, toplumsal, kültürel ve dinî arka planların izi sürülmüştür. Bu nedenle elinizdeki çalışma, sadece klasik Türk edebiyatı araştırmacıları için değil, edebiyat teorisi, karşılaştırmalı edebiyat, dünya edebiyatı, Osmanlı siyaset ve tasavvuf düşüncesi, sosyal ve kültürel tarihi ve ekoeleştiri alanında çalışan araştırmacılar için de çeşitli düzeylerde veri sunabilecek mahiyettedir.
