West of Potsdam’s city center lies the Golm Campus, the largest campus of the University of Potsdam. Its different buildings tell of the numerous institutions that were established at this site over the years: From the mid-1930s, the Walther Wever Barracks were located here. From 1943, it housed the Air Intelligence Division of the German Airforce Supreme Commander. In 1951, a training institution of the Ministry of State Security moved in, which existed until 1989 under different names. In July 1991, the newly founded University of Potsdam took over the premises, which are now part of the Potsdam-Golm Science Park. The book takes you on a historic journey of the place and invites you to take a walk across today’s campus. The book includes over 110 photos and a detailed map.

Zu den zahlreichen Materialien und Vorgängen, die vom politischen System der DDR geheimgehalten wurden und die jetzt öffentlich zugänglich werden, gehören auch viele der an den Universitäten und Hochschulen der DDR verfaßten Promotionsschriften.Nach einer Einführung in die Promotionspraxis der DDR untersuchen die Autoren dieses Buches bei 5.475 geheimgehaltenen Dissertationen die Gründe für die Geheimhaltung der an den Universitäten und Hochschulen der DDR angenommenen Doktorarbeiten. An erster Stelle sind Arbeiten zu nennen, deren Themen eindeutig militär- und sicherheitsrelevant waren. Doch auch Kernkraftnutzung und Umweltbelastungen gehörten zu den Gebieten, die unter den vom SED-Regime extensiv ausgelegten Sicherheitsbegriff fielen. Im Systemwettbewerb wurde es auch für wichtig erachtet, sportwissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse zu schützen. Weiterhin wurden viele medizinische, psychologische und soziologische Dissertationen zu Themen der realen Arbeits- und Lebensbedingungen in der DDR klassifiziert, weil aus ihnen eine DDR-Wirklichkeit erschlossen werden konnte, die mit den ideologischen Ansprüchen der SED nicht übereinstimmte. Und schließlich sind Doktorarbeiten gesperrt worden, weil ihre Autoren wichtige Funktionen im Partei- und Staatsapparat bzw. in der volkseigenen Industrie innehatten.Darüberhinaus analysieren die Autoren das sozio-biographische Profil der geheimen Dissertationen im allgemeinen und die Strukturen der Geheimhaltung im besonderen, wobei auch die Rolle der Gutachter untersucht wurde."(...) So ist ein Werk entstanden, das zuverlässig Auskunft über die Promotionen und über das Promovieren in der DDR gibt. Die Verfasser schließen mit ihrer Arbeit eine Lücke. (...)
